For a group that endlessly bitches about colonization, they sure do a fuck load of it themselves.

They lord over franchises and dangle them in front of what they consider to be a caste of unenlightened savages while expecting them to be grateful.

I’m being hyperbolic but even well intentioned progressives in touch with their humanity typically fail to see the similarities, and worse, they fail to consider the collateral damage. The sentiments here are largely directed at the sanctimonious fucks that hog the spotlight in the culture war, but speak more generally to the fundamental lack of self awareness in even the most warm and well-meaning progressive.

I do like to think a lot of them mean well, but god damn do they make it hard. The ironic parallels to colonial behavior are just so strong, and they’re willfully ignorant of them. Hence the constant surprise at the consequences. But for every progressive willing to make an effort to understand, there’s a dozen who take the pushback and use it as evidence that the savages are even worse than they thought. Clearly it’s not because we treat them like shit, both within the media and without. Clearly it’s not because we abuse power as soon as we have it, thinking that our own incomplete judgement of someone’s character is enough cause to destroy their fucking lives. And it certainly isn’t because we spend more energy delighting in the destruction of old traditions than we do any real positive change.

Instead of making an effort to understand the cultures they invade, they’ve got a solipsistic tendency to come up with the least charitable interpretation possible and run with that, especially if it’s dehumanizing. Things like courage to face the unknown and show personal responsibility become “toxic masculinity” and I’m supposed to believe that take coming from men and women who haven’t faced a single real struggle in their whole goddamn lives. I’m supposed to believe that when any time other negative, aggressive traditionally masculine traits are expressed by female character, they’re seen as empowering?

I know I’m kind of doing the same thing here, and it’s not universally applicable, but the groupthink in social justice circles is so strong and the lack of any self-criticism with regards to how they portray and treat people that disagree with them makes it hard. I try extremely hard myself to give everyone the benefit of the doubt in terms of their intentions. I’ve learned a lot about myself and had my perspective seriously altered and enhanced by broader cultural conversations brought up by people who would be considered “SJW’s”. But the whole endeavor becomes more and more difficult when for half a fucking decade it’s been overwhelmingly more likely for me to be called a soulless Nazi than it has been for anyone to show the basic courtesy of assuming good faith. Worse, they’ve tried to tell me what my own intentions are, and in the vast majority of cases end up being laughably uninformed and naive in what they think the other side thinks.

They question every power structure except the one they’ve created. They fight every injustice except the ones they’ve perpetrated. They denounce every form of hate and prejudice except the ones they themselves hold, tripping over themselves to justify them with rhetoric that wouldn’t sound out of place in the mansion of a colonial governor. They believe in fighting for equality and tolerance, without stopping to think about the intolerance themselves are spreading, or considering the complexities associated with defining or achieving equality. The question “Hey, what would happen if all the people whose hatred of the outgroup we gave a pass to actually did get in a position to enact change?” has been answered time and time again every time it’s become a reality. Fuck whitey. Fuck the right wing. They deserve it because they’re savages and are too stupid to learn. Better that we lord over them then let them keep their identity or livelihood.

This is exactly what I was afraid was going to happen in the early days of Anita Sarkeesian and Tropes Vs Women, one of the first games that really got pushback over it's female characters was Dragon's Crown which really did have some pretty over the top designs, you could perhaps see circa 2013 people's dislike of it as being reasonable, but that's now evolved into the ResetERA mentality of people getting pissed off over the smallest amount of sexual content in games.

I knew it was going to be give an inch and they'll take a mile and it wouldn't stop at only the most over the top female characters and flagrant sexuality and I was exactly right.

Now the irony is is right smack dab in the middle of this era of ugly female character designs was the debut of one of the sexiest game girls ever, 2B from Nier Automata, who has a huge female fan following because thankfully not all female gamers are so insecure as to feel threatened by a sexy character design and proving that ResetERA doesn't have to be your audience and doesn't represent all gamers.

I think the reason left leaning people, even somewhat moderate ones, can't see the unfairness of the situation is because fundamentally they think that if a woman says something, a man's place is to simply agree with her no questions asked, no matter what, a woman simply can't be in the wrong and a man in the right, it just does not compute in their worldview, it's the same deal with white versus non-white.

I've argued with somewhat moderate liberals online about the state of gaming and comics and other nerdy interests and no matter what I said it literally all boiled down to the fact that the changes have been spearheaded by "women and minorities" therefore it's ok, nobody can complain about it, the final quality of a product doesn't matter depending on who made it, that's literally all there is to it, they refused to believe that people were upset about the work these creators were putting out and not just upset over their identity.

It boils down to white man = bad, woman and minority = good.

A black woman could hold up 4 fingers and ask a white guy to tell her it's 5 fingers and if he doesn't agree he's in the wrong, that's all there is to it.

And once people figured out that mentality existed of "I can do no wrong if I'm the right color or gender" they damn sure chose to exploit it, exploit it, exploit it at every opportunity.

I recently read a graphic novel called "I Am Not Okay with this" and I liked it enough. It was a bleak little two-shot that was odd enough to keep my attention and relatable enough to be like "Huh, this reminds me of people I know." Also the art style was this cute combo of Peanuts and Popeye, which I liked. I went to see what other people thought of it, and saw that people were reveiw bombing it because of the ending.

The comic ends with the main character killing herself when her weird telepathic powers and her emotions become too much for her to bear. It's depressing and sudden, true, but it totally makes sense within the story since the main character's been in an emotional and mental death spiral for the entire comic and the general tone of the story is bleak as hell. Like, it sucks, but it makes sense because it feels as though the story's been building towards something drastic like this happening.

People were throwing a shitfit about this because the main character is bisexual with a clear preference for the ladies. They were declaring it a classic example of "bury your gays" and homophobic, despite the fact that Sydney doesn't die because she's a carpet muncher, but because she's literally going insane from all the stress she's under as what's essentially a mutant that never got a visit from Professor X and has to cope with her shit on her own. They also declared that the fact that she kills herself is offensive to the mentally ill despite that being an unfortunate reality for some of the people who struggle with these issues. Terrible shit happens. It's not "problematic" to acknowledge that. They also said that because the writer is a straight male, he shouldn't have been allowed to write the story because he "doesn't understand the female experience."

In general, a lot of the beef with the story didn't come from a place of actual criticism but more "It offends my morals!" This, and the subsequent review bombings, are just flat out childish and ridiculous. Not every bit of media needs to align 110% with your values.

I just wish people could just say they didn't like something for non-social justice reasons. Just say you didn't like it. Say you thought the ending was rushed. Say you thought the main character was kinda flat. Say you didn't like the art style, whatever! Those are valid critiques. Saying "This is bad because a bad thing happens to a minority!!!" is not, and never will be.

A new study suggests that the future of butter might be insects. The results show that butter made from insect fat might not just be healthier, but people may actually like the taste of it.

In the study, researcher Daylan Tzompa-Sosa explained, “The ecological footprint of an insect is much smaller compared to animal-based food sources. Besides, we can grow insects in large quantities in Europe, which also reduces the footprint of transport." (iStock)
Researchers at Ghent University in Belgium studied whether or not taste testers could tell the difference between food items made with traditional butter and ones that used insect fat. To achieve this, they made three versions of each item: one with regular butter, one made with a quarter of the butter replaced with insect fat, and a version where half the butter was replaced

According to the results of the study, taste testers could not tell the difference between regular cake and cake with a quarter of insect fat (made from the larvae of black soldier flies). They also served taste testers waffles, and they could not tell the difference between any of the three versions.


In their published results, researcher Daylan Tzompa-Sosa explained, “The ecological footprint of an insect is much smaller compared to animal-based food sources.
