here's the redesign, for posterity. there's a noticeable hourglass figure, a thinner/softer face, and even robot DSLs. pretty identifiably female. smug is blind.

That design does look female to me, in the same way you'd imagine a female transformer would be designed back in the original cartoon. Admittedly I don't know much about mecha though.

It feels like a nice callback to the original cartoon - more blocky and angular. some of the newer cartoons have a smoother, rounder style that would make this look out of place.
