Alright, bit of an observation from my perspective. I live in a small town, not really rural but those areas are very close by. On my trips into the larger city nearby I've been keeping an eye on certain items. Mostly knick knacks in gas stations, the larger stores, etc. really anything cheaply made as it is more likely than not made in China. These items are not being restocked, and are in low quantity or simply out of stock. Local electronic shop hasn't gotten components in, and no new cellphones either. I know the guy who runs it and he says shipments he ordered back in January never came.

I'd like to believe that things won't get very bad over here, but as I've said before most issues we will see will be from people panicking and making things worse. All my neighbors and I are reorganing our pantries, and cellers. Think I'll get the water and propane tanks re-filled early. Might avoid a lot of hassle later. I'd rather not drag main while this virus is making the rounds.

I live in a smallish city and our shop does electronics repairs (phones, computers, etc). Our suppliers are warning us they might be dry on stock (namely iPhone replacement screents) for the next few months, so we've stocked up ourselves.

If you're low in Vitamin D and most westerners are at this point, your health can suffer in all sorts of subtle ways and in can affect your resistance to disease. Old people also have the ability to make far, far less of the vitamin naturally even when there is sun - you make something like 7 times less at 70 than you do at twenty with the same sun exposure. So older people who at an at risk group for even normal flu can benefit immensely if you can persuade them to take it. I've been told by an allergy specialist than anyone with autoimmune issues of any kind should definitely supplement.

But I have been literally exposed to several bad places, in a consistant manner for several weeks in places were germs are able to spread rampantly. I have taken all of those precautions as posted previously. And so far so good.

Same, and I've managed to avoid the horrible flu/cold.cough that has otherwise ripped through my family. Keeping a good diet with lots of fruit and vegetables and good nutrients is important too. Also just avoiding busy/packed places full of folks and their fractious kids and nasty habits. I like to supermarket shop later in the day when very few people are about. It's quiet, no queues and way less noise as well as nobody sneezing and coughing all over the place and you can keep a good stance between what folks are even there. When I occasionally end up somewhere pacled I get out of there ASAP and just quickly move clean away from people I see openly coughing and sneezing without bothering to cover their mouths. It's shocking how many adults haven't yet learned coughs and sneezes spread diseases, the ignorant fucks.

Fears of a coronavirus pandemic grew on Monday after sharp rises in new cases reported in Iran, Italy and South Korea, although China relaxed restrictions on movement in several places including Beijing as its rates of new infections eased.

The Geneva-based agency declared the H1N1 swine flu outbreak a pandemic in 2009, which turned out to be mild, leading to some criticism after pharmaceutical companies rushed development of vaccines and drugs.

WHO declared the novel coronavirus that emerged in Wuhan, China in December a public health emergency of International concern, known as a PHEIC, on Jan. 30. It was aimed at helping countries with weaker health systems shore up their defenses.

Since then the virus has spread, with more than 77,000 known infections in China, including 2,445 deaths, and 1,769 cases and 17 deaths in 28 other countries, the latest WHO figures show. South Korea, Japan and Italy are experiencing large outbreaks.

“There is no official category (for a pandemic),” WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said.

“WHO does not use the old phasing system that some people may be familiar with from 2009. Under the IHR (International Health Regulations), WHO has declared a public health emergency of international concern.”

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, told reporters on Friday: “I would like to assure you we are following this virus 24/7 round the clock ...As we speak our situation is that we are still in a phase where containment is possible with a narrowing window of opportunity.”

I do feel bad for these people. So everything but masks are now infinitely more costly, why would they want to engage in this business? The government is almost for sure not going to provide any assistance since this is China. People are being fined for selling 0.6 yuan masks for just 1 yuan, is labour, rent, and shelves free? I understand kicking those trying to sell $1 masks for $200, but this is just ordinary pricing being persecuted. It's rather sad, some companies are already bankrupt (I know this to be true on a personal level).

Not sure how many masks can be made from one ton of cotton, but I'm sure a ton of cotton isn't worth 220k or 300k fucking yuan. That's 15 times more expensive. Let's just say each masks cost 1 yuan to make and forget about all the overhead to be less autistic, now it takes 15 yuan, and government says "you can't raise the price", so for each mask, they are losing over 10 yuan.

Yeah, who can blame them for closing the factory and running with the little amount they have left?

Raw materials up by at least 1500%, labour and etc all well over 1000%.
Yet the government has laws to prevent mask manufactures from increasing the price of the product.

So something that costs a dollar to make will now be at least 25 dollars. Ordinarily they will sell the product for say 3 dollars and bag the $2 profit, now they have to sell it at $25 to just breakeven, however the state deems this illegal and they are forced to still sell the product for 3 dollars if they want to sell it, which results in astronomical loss since masks are sold by the thousands.

Therefore they decided to keep doors shut.

Hope this sounds less autistic and makes more sense.

Yeah... except China isn't Communist, not close. China's communist in name only. Market is largely unregulated, hence they don't give a fuck about IP. The state owns information and some infrastructure, where even these state owned companies are allowed to compete.
