Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

This will fuck with the entire field of electronics and some precision manufacturing, right?
Most likely only in the short term. I remember a story from, I dunno, 10-15 years ago? when China tried to stretch their rare earth minerals (REM) monopolist muscle and smothered the flow of REM to most of the world (or jacked the prices _a lot_ - my memory is failing me on the more subtle parts of this story).

Suddenly US and other nations "remembered" how to mine, refine and/or recycle their own REM and free themselves of China's supply. It came at a higher price of course, but not as high as the price wanted by the Chinese. So the PRC noticed very shortly that they're shooting themselves in the foot with such attempts and politely returned to the trading table.

Since I learned about this, I stopped considering China as this end-all be-all upcoming economic and raw-resource-dealing giant that oh so many people are painting them to be.

[EDIT]
Fucking hell, why does the word w.e.a.n gets wordfiltered to wean?

This might have come up any of the 427 pages of this thread, but a running theory was that this was actually the result of losing control of an experimental bioweapon .

...but how likely is it, from that frame of mind, that this was actually the Chinese government trying to cull their own population?
The bioweapon has been discussed many times, just search for it. Fair to say, it's would be very hard to prove without somebody squealing, and like any good gang, the CCP knows that snitches get stitches.

I think it's most likely that it emerged naturally as these things do (something I said from nearly the start). I don't see how any government (i.e. either the CCP or the USG or somebody else) would intentionally release it, it is just too distructive with too high a chance of (literally) blowing up in their faces. Could be a Broken Arrow, but I doubt it.

However, I think there are some questions about the Wuhan Institute of Virology's safety procedures that aren't unreasonable to ask. I think the possibility of a link to Institute, either through the sale of test animals to wet market or the infection of a researcher that was covered up until it was too late, is quite possible. But again, hard to prove without eyewitnesses or document leaks. One circumstantial piece of evidence against this theory is that the CCP hasn't purged the Institute and it seems fairly open (by Chinese) in researching the virus. Of course, there could be a link that they don't know about, but frankly that is hard to distinguish from the completely natural case.

The Trump Administration has requested an appropriation for 2.5 billion dollars. 1 billion for a vaccine and 1.5 billion to stockpile protective equipment and treatment medications.

Now we see a bad flu is enough to knock down our most financially successful corporation. There's many things about the coronavirus response that have disappointed me, but this is probably the greatest. China's frailty is our own.

"The retarded boy must be made to learn."

Honestly watching this shit unfold, I'm aware of how much of potential mess it'll make of the regional ecconomy but fuck it. The idiots in charge over the last 15 years put all their eggs in the worlds shittiest basket not just here in but in Canberra. I've been watching news reports of the tertiary and tourism sectors pleading mercy because they figured this gravy train of spacially-unaware-obnoxious-fucktards-none-of-whom-can-handle-driving-on-the-left-hand-side-of-the-road would never end. Well it apparently has and now they're screwed.

Fuck em. If they don't learn to diverisify now, they never will.

I'm very much hoping the House does not decide to ask for concessions for this. Then again Iv been proven wrong many times before.

I remember part of that being China deciding not to use their huge deposits, instead they were saving them for later when mines in many other countries would have been nearly depleted. China would then have a stranglehold on the global market for electronics.

Lots of people get confused by the name "rare earth minerals" - the truth is, that they're not exactly rare rare as in where you can mine them, they are rare in the sense, that you need to go through tons of rock to get them, the process is very polluting. So no, we won't run out of REM, you just do not want them to be mined in your own back yard.

Have also read somewhere that electronics makers have been redesigning products to require little or no rare earths.

Probably late because I'm 20 pages back, but if I don't post it now before bed I'll probably forget. Florida Man may run out of air conditioning.

Congress should consider this grave situation. Perhaps a billion in emergency air conditioning funds could be freed up to make sure Floridians stay off the streets and limit their feats of exceptionality to their own abodes this summer?

Your universities are also going to be forced into having a miserable time educating young Aussie cunts again. :feels:

Nips take the Mianzi reward of the decade.

Translation of a translation:
If we can't get the Olympics doing, can you imagine the (economical) losses? All you media types are a bunch of stupid cunts, compared to the new coronavirus, it is our responsibility to exert all our efforts to hold a successful Olympics, right?
The virus is already an irreversible epidemic, all we can do is go forward. [1]
There's nothing else that can be done anyway, we should go all out [2], if we Nipponese (what, that's actually a word?) hold an Olympics despite of the virus, this will be a historical achievement!

[1] 木已成舟: The wood is already crafted into a boat. Meaning the result is already clear and there's no going back.
[2] 死馬當活馬醫: Curing a dead horse as if it's still alive. This is literally the stunt pulled by Wuhan on Doctor Li. Meaning despite all hopes being lost, let's just put in more effort and have faith because there might be a glimpse of hope.

The Chinese translation is actually bang on...
I guess "dice was thrown" is the exact metaphor of "木已成舟 wood already made into a boat" meaning it's already done and there's no going back.
Or just set the boat on fire and toss the dice into a pool of acid, I don't know.

Japan Olympics, Marathon, 2020.

Pretty fucking retarded piece if you ask me.

Pretty fucking exceptional piece if you ask me.

When has hosting the massive pyramid scam Olympics brought actual economic benefits?
