US "The Squad" Megathread - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Talib Derangement Syndrome

I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

This woman is so unlikable.

Pretty much all of the Squad members have referred to themselves as representing all of America, not their own districts. It's not uncommon among the older idiots either. A lot of leftists buy into it too... it's one of the reasons their own districts get so thoroughly ignored most of the time, but lockstep party-line voters keep a bunch of them in there all the same.

The scenario being put forward is pretty mundane sounding. It basically boils down to immigration fraud, Omar allegedly married her brother to get him a green card in a matter of months rather than the years it would take for a sibling visa.

Is there some sort of special treatment for third worlders? Because a couple of days ago, I was talking to a British guy who married a U.S. citizen, and his application process took two years.

Blast from the past:

AOC: My Teachers Thought I Needed Remedial Education

I assumed that the headline was clickbait – but in it is contained yet another AOC gaffe/lie.

To quote from the Post’s article (which is from 2019): Congresswoman AOC recalled how her public-school teachers thought she needed “remedial education” because she had grown up speaking Spanish at home. The freshman lawmaker, speaking Saturday at a packed town hall organized by the Jackson Heights People for Public Schools, said, “As a child I spoke Spanish first. … and I went to a school where no one looked like me. I went to a school where teachers thought I needed remedial education because I spoke two languages instead of one.”

According to AOC, it wasn’t until she took a “high stakes test” (any test used to make important decisions about students) and scored in the 99th percentile that her teachers realized she was capable. I’d say good for her – but what she described cannot be true as presented. As the Western Journal notes: according to a blog post by Diane Ravitch, a professor at New York University and former U.S. assistant secretary of education who is a fan of AOC: “It was a bit jarring to hear AOC say that she was treated in the Yorktown schools as in need of remedial education because she was Hispanic, not mainstream, but, she said, ‘a-high-stakes standardized Test’ revealed she was in the 99th percentile,” Ravitch wrote.
No one stopped to point out that she could not be referring to any high-stakes test used for accountability purposes because they don’t rank by percentile,”

It's a couple days old but this dude breaks down the Ilhan Omar situation.

AOC BRAGS ABOUT GETTING GODDAUGHTER INTO POSH NYC PRIVATE SCHOOL

Holy fuck, once again Red Cortez has proven herself to be a massive hypocrite. She gets her god daughter into a charter school yet she is against charter schools. Remember the following, all progressive politicians are hypocrites. With little to no exceptions.

If I were a lobbyist, AOC would be the perfect mark. She's the type of person who complains incessantly about money but when confronted by lambos and diamonds, she goes googly eyed. And like most commies she has no sense of ethics so she's bought relatively cheaply.

I can't wait for the shit-storm when it is generally known that she is personally corrupt and has sold out her cultists.

My political ideology comes from Albert Einstein too lol

It's true Einstein was a socialist but he was not an economist

TBH they each deserve their own lolcow threads. AOC is up there with Wu in terms of psychotic ramblings.
The megathread is fine imo
Many of the people in the Bernie Sanders expanded universe deserve their own threads and keeping it all contained in one place is a good thing for the health of the overall board.

This guy hits the nail on the head. I am so tired of her acting like she is the star of the show. You were elected to represent Minnesota, talk more about Minnesota.
What fuck is it with Swedish people accepting Somalis within their midst. Every other ethnic group in Africa and the Middle East looks down on this lot.

I'm fine having Somalis. I'm just tired of the disingenuous attitude as if they are the only minority we have here. We have tons of Mexicans too. We also have tons of Hmong that have been here since right after Vietnam ended, us and Michigan are like the only parts of the country that have a significant Hmong population. But they're not muslim, so woke media doesn't score any points by manufacturing bigotry against them. Ilhan Omar's wikipedia page is a mile long because she tweets "blah blah blah Trump blah blah Islamophobia" every other day. If we had a Hmong woman legislator here wikipedia wouldn't have more than two sentences about her.
