The Final Fantasy Thread

Apparently Square did axe any and all remasters relating to Final Fantasy 13.

No trilogy collection or any of that bullshit. It's not like it matters anyways, all you need to play is Lightning Returns.

Because that's the only good game in the trilogy and it ignores the first two games like they never even happened.

That and the bulk of the Final Fantasy audience is on Playstation which now has backwards compatibility again for the PS5.

Since the first two games were done on the Crystal Tools engine which was notorious shit, I'm wondering if that played a role in the decision. Were they actually considering doing a PS5 version of Crystal Tools for the hypothetical FF13 remasters, only to decide that it was unworkable?

I would imagine there's also the issue of FF13 being very recent compared to every other FF title (such as 7, Tactics, 8, and so on) and FF13 being much more widely accessible compared to older titles. They also likely have sales data from the latest batch of re-releases (via the Switch or Virtual Console/PC/whatever) and made a risk/reward decision.

The company is probably going to have very serious talks about re-releases vs. remasters vs. remakes pending on how Final Fantasy 7 - Remake does and this might be waiting for that data to come out.

I would imagine that if 7 does well they might opt to remake Tactics in 7's engine. SRPGs have carved themselves out a nitche in consoles and a high production one that gives the option between active and turn based might be the push the genre needs to make it more popular. Maybe refine the campaign so it's closer to how DOS2 played or something so it's not just map after map and it feels like a more embellished and open RPG with unit customization.

I'm the biggest Tactics fanboy on earth, but If FF7R is a big success - they're likely to find other large scale games to be remade. I would imagine Final Fantasy 6, 5, or 8 would be next on that list before Tactics.

Edit - Remake Chrono Trigger you fucking cowards.

I guess judging from the Sephiroth dialogue we seem likely to get, no one at SE remembers that Sephiroth initially didn't even know who Cloud was upon re-awakening. It took Sephiroth/Jenova awhile to connect him to the random grunt that got a lucky shot on the earlier incarnation.

Probably unsurprisingly a lot of passionate people on a FF thread. Thanks for the comments and recommends fam.

On the anime point...I actually like anime. Its the more obnoxious aspects that I have a distaste for in anime and games that take those influences. Silly mascots, fan service (tiddies, loli etc) braindead main characters, unfunny humour (this one is probably very subjective).
Avoid X-2 like the plague. X itself is fine.

Again, they inserted new divine forces into the plot (when the original had no "higher power" besides the Planet or Lifestream) and there's official word that was internal pressure to change Tifa's design. See:

Eh, Cloud's breakdown at Aerith's demise would point to him being seriously attached to her. And that same line about Aerith wanting to know the real Cloud would point to her seeing past Cloud's persona for who he really is and wanting to get closer with that Cloud. Mind you, official sourcebooks and interviews and novellas list both Tifa and Aerith as romantic options for Cloud. Let alone Cloud and Aerith's appearances in games outside of their universe like Final Fantasy Tactics.

And sure, Cloud wasn't born a hero but I'd say he became capable of it through his conditioning. Hojo's experiments turned him into Soldier material and so enabled Avalanche to even survive (recall Cloud's words on how if Avalanche faced Soldiers at least one would die).
I get what you're saying but you might want to not rely on official sourcebooks and interviews while decrying all the (terrible) compilation crap.

Suffice to say Aeris was interested in Cloud romantically before she realized how batshit he was. After that I'd say she was more just concerned. Tifa does seem to have had some weird co-dependent crush on him, but again, it's short circuited by how batshit insane Cloud is for most of the game.

Final Fantasy Tactics was the greatest FF game of all time. Cohesive story, challenging game play, a progression/job system that was fun and versatile, and villains who were properly evil bastards whom you wanted to kill. Plus it mocked the hell out of Christianity, so there was that too.
Delita Heiral did nothing wrong

Atleast everyone can agree sephiroth did nothing wrong
He just wanted to be with mommy dearest
He wanted to be with mommy dearest who wasn't even really his mom and wasn't even really an ancient. He may have even largely just been acting on the same kind of Jenova instincts with ad hoc rationalizations Cloud had in pursuing Sephiroth throughout the game. Screw all that compilation "Sephiroth's will was so strong he just psychically ate his mom" crap, the ambiguity was cool.

I still hold the belief that Nomura was the worst thing to happen to final fantasy, especially 7. He has no clue why people really liked it. God I hate that man.
What exactly did he do besides character design? I assumed a lot of it was Sakaguchi. Come to think of it, I am concerned what he'll do since Sakaguchi isn't in the picture.

Instead of a sperg post, I'll just sum up that he's currently the creative head of final fantasy, so he's approved of all the stupid shit since X

Also he directed Advent Children.

I was going to demand they remake Seiken Densetsu 3, but then they decided to do that and now I'm frightened.

That held the title of the greatest video game movie before Sonic took the crown.

Listen dawg if you wanted to just square(soft) up you could have just cut out the foreplay and said so.

Really though my heart has always been with Street Fighter. It was a perfect storm of shit and it's still fun to watch for me.

Advent Children can be summarized easily with "Nomura tries too hard to be cool"

I thought FF10-2 was OK on its own, but they completely threw out the gameplay that I liked from FF10 and also they incongruously made Yuna a happy-go-lucky adventurer after she went through all kinds of trauma and loss in the much darker FF10. I would have enjoyed seeing her just completely go to pieces the first time she fought an undead Aeon.

Remember that the Aeons weren't just beasts or pets but sentient beings she had a close spiritual link with, went to a lot of trouble to obtain, were vital to keeping her alive and making sure her life quest succeeded, and were a huge part of her very identity as a Summoner (if there are no Aeons to summon, how can you call yourself a Summoner?). And then she had no choice but to kill them all. Like putting down Old Yeller, except that she had to do that at least five times in a row (more if she got the optional/hidden Aeons). And this was after she had to reject her own religion, experienced a horrific genocidal attack against the Al Bhed (which she could have prevented if she had married Seymour), found out the Ronso were genocided (which she could have prevented if she had married Seymour), and immediately before she had to send Auron, basically putting him down too. Yes, he was someone she "only" respected rather than loved, but he helped protect her on a long hard journey and was her last living (OK, technically undead, but whatever) link to her father she never knew. And then her boyfriend fades away/dies because she killed her religion's god. Poor Yuna really suffered and has got to have a lot of guilt over what she did even though it was 100% justified. Without the support of her remaining friends and the profound gratitude of all the people of Spira, she'd probably have killed herself.

Actually, with all the sorrow and euthanasia and genocide, now I'm wondering what the people who made it were personally going through at the time.

Eh, Sephiroth is literally Evil Jesus anyway, and the nature of the relationship between the three members of the Trinity has been debated for as long as Christianity has existed. Of course the relationship between Jenova (God/Jehovah), Sephiroth (both God and man in one body, that is, Jesus), and the scattered Jenova cells causing (un)holy miracles (the Holy Spirit) is going to end up being somewhat murky and ambiguous with different sources not agreeing with each other. The series even calls out the relationship in the naming of Advent Children: the Advent is the Second Coming of Christ, while Advent Children is the Second Coming of Sephiroth.

Remake it with just better graphics and maybe more sidequests or remake and revamp it (i.e. change the gameplay mechanic)?
Change the gameplay? Please god no. The different gameplay was part of the reason I hated Chrono Cross.

Not exactly a high bar to clear there. Although I was somewhat fond of the first Mortal Kombat movie.

Square never gets it right with sequels; they either change too much or repeat the original too much. Too much of a reprise: FF7AC, FF4 The After, the follow-up fiction from FF10 that undid fucking everything (technically a setup for an overfaithful reprise, but whatever). Too different: Chrono Cross, FF10-2 (an OK game but not a good sequel), FFTA (ditto). Didn't play/not sure: FF13-2, FF13LR. It's no wonder that they didn't even try to make a direct sequel for the longest time.

Because JRPGs are otherwise well known for being respectful of Christianity, of course.

Chrono Cross basically owes its existence to a game not even the weebiest weebs who ever weebed give much of a shit about and existed on the Satellaview: Radical Dreamers. All of CC's numerous problems owe themselves to the fact this game forced all of its most questionable concepts directly into it with the subtlety of a Daisy Cutter.

What I do like about X-2's premise was exploring a post-Sin world, see how everyone coped with a very sudden shift now that they no longer have to fear Sin. I do think by having Tidus come back in the end, they chickened out and one of the reasons why I don't want a direct sequel.
