Quebec's first probable case of COVID-19 detected, health minister says

Province's health minister says measures have been quickly put in place to protect population
Quebec Health Minister Danielle McCann says the first probable case of COVID-19 has been detected in a patient who recently returned from a trip to Iran.

She said the patient, a woman, went to a clinic in the Montreal region on Monday with minor symptoms. McCann declined to specify exactly where in Montreal that clinic is located.

Measures were quickly put in place to protect the health network and the community, McCann said Thursday evening at an impromptu news conference.

She said the woman did not take public transit to get to the clinic, and she hadn't gone back to work since returning from Iran, so she has "limited contact" with people in the community.

A probable case must be confirmed by Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) in Winnipeg. McCann said results from this most recent case are expected to arrive Sunday.

There are currently 21 cases under investigation in the province.

The ministry said a probable case of COVID-19 is determined by several factors, including a body temperature reading of more than 38 C and meeting COVID-19 exposure criteria.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak a global health emergency. More than 81,000 cases of COVID-19 have been detected since the virus emerged in the Hubei province of China last month.

In Canada, there are currently 13 confirmed cases, with the latest reported this morning.

Are these people serious right now? Instead of talking about updates on the virus or giving tips on how to deal with it, people have to turn it into a Trump thing.
Because apparently that's the most important thing right now.

The TDS pathway is the only currently functioning neural pathway these people have at this point.

Did You notice that Bob Iger, the guy who’s been Disney’s CEO for 15 years, stepped down unexpectedly on Tuesday? Yeah Disney is Fucked and Bob knows it.

And the person they put in to replace him was the head of Parks, which doesn't sound like the kind of thing you'd do if you knew your theme park business was about to implode.

The truth is, cruise lines are a lot more fucked than Disney/Six Flags/Universal/et al., for the simple reason that so far, this virus seems to have left the under-10 crowd alone. It doesn't cross the placental barrier, either, and I haven't seen reports of dead pregnant women yet.

Disneyland probably doesn't actually mind losing out on the "old folks in scooters" crowd that much, they mostly make traffic patterns suck and are meaner and more entitled when it comes to interacting with the employees. If the 80+ year olds and pre-existing lung conditions people stay out, it's probably a more pleasant day for everyone else in the park.

The entire cruise industry is boned, though. They put a big bet, many years ago, on the idea of riding the baby boomer wave until it crashed against the shore. Over 1/3 of cruise passengers are 70+, a demographic spread that looks just about opposite that of Disney parks. Combined with the deaths from the Diamond Princess and the fact that everyone already knows those ships are petri dishes.

Yersinia pestis, the bacterium that causes plague is believed to originate mostly in central Asia, though once it spreads and gets into the local ground rodent population it stays there for centuries causing possible outbreaks every few decades. It finally burned it's self out in Europe at the end of the 18th century and has been in much of the U.S for the last century thanks to the 1894 Hong Kong plague outbreak though it's easily controlled.

I think Iv read that most human flu strains mostly comes from south East Asia thanks of a perfect combination of year round warm weather, terrain, animal diversity and population centers. The oldest evidence for smallpox is in Egypt, Ramses the Great apparently had it.

It's the jungle atmosphere that's conducive to rapid reproduction of bacterium and viruses.
I completely agree. And let's be honest, in those areas, those populations have poor hygiene and food preparation.

The workers who were sent to the scene were not medical professionals and usually help low-income Americans returning to the United States from foreign countries during crises.

Travis AFB is in Solano County. The person who was hospitalized with coronavirus infection is also from Solano County. If this is true holy shit what are they thinking? I know the writers are doing their best to make Trump look bad but these are federal government employees who should know better.

Yes, everyone is out to get Trump...it must be the deep state! It has nothing to do with the people Trump put in charge of those departments, it’s not his administration or nothing 🤷🏻‍♂️

Burgers on notice, chronic mask shortage highly likely. "Major shortage of masks in US hospitals are likely soon - HMFA (the US Hospital Management and Financial Association) is reporting (Link) that most hospitals are experiencing delays of three to five days on orders of N95 respirators because the majority of the manufactured masks are needed in the country of manufacture; this means there isn't much surplus available to ship to meet US demand. On Feb. 26, U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar told the House Appropriations Committee that the country has a stockpile of 12 million N95 masks, but according to HHS estimates, it needs 300 million to cover an emergency. The article adds that the maximum annual production capacity in the U. S. and Mexico is 65 million (Note from me: I couldn't find any information whether this can be ramped up further)."

Fuck. I feel like I read somewhere that China requisitioned a 3M plant, maybe that's what "needed in the country of manufacture" refers to? How do we only have 12 million masks stockpiled?

I found out today that 2 (unrelated) large biotech firms I have connections with are nearing a critical mask shortage already. They're in panic mode as every avenue they had in the chain is dry (and back ordering isn't getting them a confirmed delivery date). This could have financial ramifications for that industry much sooner than anticipated.

SCAD: Students ‘not permitted to return’ to campus after certain international travel

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) says it is taking crucial steps Thursday to stop coronavirus from spreading farther.

Self-quarantine policies are now in effect for students who travel to certain international countries.

SCAD students sent News 3 an email from David Blake, SCAD Savannah’s dean of students, in which he says the following:

If you choose to travel to mainland China, Macau, Taiwan, Hong Kong, or South Korea, you will not be permitted to return to a SCAD location until further notice, based on current recommendations from the WHO and the Centers for Disease Control. “
DEAN BLAKE

“If you send an email like that, it’s kinda overdoing stuff,” said a Chinese international student at SCAD who did not want to be identified.

Michelle Gavin, SCAD’s executive director of communications, says the school is following recommendations put forth by the US State Department and Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

According to the CDC’s website, American citizens returning from China will undergo health screenings.

Anyone with signs and symptoms of the illness — which include fever, cough or difficulty breathing — will have an additional health assessment.

Officials may monitor certain travelers, limit their movements or limit their contact with others up to 14 days after their return, according to the agency’s website.

SCAD says it will now require students to ‘self-quarantine’ for 14 days after they return from any of the CDC Level 1, 2 or 3 countries.

Gavin says self-quarantine means that students will not be permitted inside dorms or in classrooms for 14 days after their return to the United States. But she says at that point, students will have missed too much class to stay enrolled at the school.

Gavin says school policy prohibits students from missing more than four classes.

“If they really want this to settle down, they should start to sanitize the buildings right now. It’s not about coronavirus. It’s about the flu right now,” said one third-year SCAD student.

SCAD says the university is taking these precautions to protect its 15,000 students and to prepare for more restrictions from the CDC.

Furthermore, SCAD is encouraging its students to avoid any international travel “for the remainder of the academic year, including during spring break.”

“We acknowledge that this is a stressful time worldwide; university officials continue to monitor this evolving global public health situation,” said Gavin.

In Hong Kong, SCAD students are taking classes online. The university’s building was closed last month and will remain closed until the end of the Spring quarter.

All SCAD study abroad programs have been temporarily suspended.

Gavin says international students who are starting a new program in late March still have time to come to the United State and self-quarantine before the first day of classes.

SCAD says counseling is available to students through the Offices of Counseling and Student Support Services.

A recent story claims that the people at the Travis base won't move infected people to Costa Mesa.

Federal health officials on Tuesday said they had no plans to move quarantined cruise ship passengers from Travis Air Force Base to Orange County.

Talks to open Fairview Developmental Center, a now-shuttered residential and care facility in Costa Mesa, were only “preparatory,” said Scott Pauley, a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokesman.

A federal judge this week extended an earlier temporary restraining order filed by the city of Costa Mesa to block the possible transfer of dozens of people housed at Travis to the city less than an hour south of Los Angeles.

Costa Mesa city leaders asked for the emergency order last week on word that the federal government was planning to bus as many as 50 people – many former passengers of the Japan-docked Diamond Princess – from Travis, as early as last weekend.

But Pauley on Tuesday said people housed at Travis who haven’t been in close contact with those infected with COVID-19 will remain at the base for the remainder of their quarantine. For many, the 14-day period ends March 2, he said.

“There is no need for them to move” from the base, Pauley said.

Meantime, three passengers who were taken to Solano County hospitals Sunday remain hospitalized in isolation where they are being monitored by health workers. Pauley would not disclose the patients’ conditions or at which hospitals they were being housed Tuesday.

Another passenger aboard the Diamond Princess who was taken from Travis to a hospital in neighboring Napa County remains in isolation there, Pauley said.

U.S. District Court Judge Josephine Staton signed the original order Feb. 21 and on Monday extended the order for one week after Costa Mesa city officials argued they still hadn’t received information from the government that they say is critical to helping keep residents safe.

That's good news if it stays that way.

These are GS-10 and above (a BA or BS is a minimum requirement at State) so yeah, they should know better than to walk around unprotected and interact with people who are exposed/infected with a new and deadly viral strain we don't have any treatment for. And spare me, the media has been biased against Trump since before the election. You don't have to like him to understand that but at least we're getting to see how useless the feds are.

You had to pick the worst one when you had a choice of Fallout 1, 2 or New Vegas.

Wait, wut about Savannah? No no no, we all just got high with three feet of pollen...or "allergy flu" or "allergy blight".

That's a big nope for me, stay in Hong Kong.

As I said earlier on this thread, Trump dropped the ball on this. I don't like how he didn't take this as seriously as he should've. I don't like how slow he was to respond to this. I don't like how he seems to still be in denial.

But if you think the Democrats aren't using this as their golden opportunity to bash Trump in every way shape and form, you're also in denial.

The Democrats are thanking God right now for this plague - they had NOTHING good enough to go on him. This is it. This is the one that even normies may listen to. But they didn't give a shit a week ago about this virus just like Trump didn't. And they're going to come out and act like they told the world this would happen? Fuck them. They did NOTHING.

Hey Nancy, Bernie, Chuck, and Elizabeth - where were you a damn month ago when the CDC said this thing was going to get bad? Mister Meteokur, a fucking lolcow YouTuber warned us about this a month ago. A YOUTUBER. I got a damn Youtuber to thank for getting my N95 masks a month in advance before they were all gone. Not the Democrats.
