AP FACT CHECK: Democrats distort coronavirus readiness

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic presidential contenders are describing the federal infectious-disease bureaucracy as rudderless and ill-prepared for the coronavirus threat because of budget cuts and ham-handed leadership by President Donald Trump. That’s a distorted picture. For starters, Trump hasn’t succeeded in cutting the budget.
He’s proposed cuts but Congress ignored him and increased financing instead. The National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention aren’t suffering from budget cuts that never took effect.
More AP Fact Checks
A look at some of the Democrats’ remarks:

MIKE BLOOMBERG: “There’s nobody here to figure out what the hell we should be doing. And he’s defunded — he’s defunded Centers for Disease Control, CDC, so we don’t have the organization we need. This is a very serious thing.” — debate Tuesday night.
JOE BIDEN, comparing the Obama-Biden administration with now: “We increased the budget of the CDC. We increased the NIH budget. ... He’s wiped all that out. ... He cut the funding for the entire effort.”
THE FACTS: They’re both wrong to say the agencies have seen their money cut. Bloomberg is repeating the false allegation in a new ad that states the U.S. is unprepared for the virus because of “reckless cuts” to the CDC. Trump’s budgets have proposed cuts to public health, only to be overruled by Congress, where there’s strong bipartisan support for agencies such as the CDC and NIH. Instead, financing has increased.
Indeed, the money that government disease detectives first tapped to fight the latest outbreak was a congressional fund created for health emergencies.
Some public health experts say a bigger concern than White House budgets is the steady erosion of a CDC grant program for state and local public health emergency preparedness — the front lines in detecting and battling new disease. But that decline was set in motion by a congressional budget measure that predates Trump.
The broader point about there being “nobody here” to coordinate the response sells short what’s in place to handle an outbreak.
The public health system has a playbook to follow for pandemic preparation — regardless of who’s president or whether specific instructions are coming from the White House. Those plans were put into place in anticipation of another flu pandemic, but are designed to work for any respiratory-borne disease.
Among the health authorities overseeing the work are Dr. Anne Schuchat, CDC’s principal deputy director and a veteran of previous outbreaks, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, NIH’s infectious disease chief who has advised six presidents.

“The CDC’s response has been excellent, as it has been in the past,” said John Auerbach, president of the nonpartisan Trust for America’s Health, which works with government at all levels to improve the nation’s response to high-risk health crises. Some Democrats have charged that Trump decimated the nation’s public health leadership, but Auerbach said CDC’s top scientific ranks have remained stable during the past three years.
Will the preparations be enough?
One of the lessons learned in prior crises, such as the anthrax attacks, is not to offer false assurances when scientists have questions about the illness.
The CDC, for example, can accurately test for the virus but has struggled to get working test kits to state health departments. That’s key if there’s a need to rapidly increase the number of tests being performed.
The U.S. closed borders to travelers from China to buy time as preparations began but, “classically that’s not the way you address an outbreak,” Fauci told The Associated Press this week. “If you do it for a very limited period of time, temporarily until you can get things in order in your own country, it could have some benefit. But in general, the concept of closing borders, you cannot do that for an extended period of time.”
But with infections now in much of the world, one of the questions for U.S. policymakers is whether it’s time to modify any of those border or travel restrictions.

A dog in Hong Kong has tested ‘weak positive’ for coronavirus

The pet dog of a coronavirus patient in Hong Kong has been found to have a “low level” of the virus, the Hong Kong government said early Friday.

The dog tested “weak positive” for the coronavirus, the city’s agricultural and fisheries department said in a statement, without giving further details. Officials will carry out further tests to confirm whether the dog has really been infected with the disease, or if it was a result of environmental contamination of its mouth and nose.

Much is still not known about the virus that is spreading around the world after emerging in central China late last year. It is thought to have transferred to humans from bats and has been shown to spread in a number of ways, but the Hong Kong agricultural department said it doesn’t have evidence that pet animals can be infected, or be a source of infection to people.

If confirmed, the dog would be the first case of a pet catching the coronavirus amid a global outbreak that’s now infected more than 82,000 people and claimed more than 2,800 lives.

The dog is being quarantined at an animal facility, the Hong Kong government said. The department strongly advised that pets of confirmed virus patients also be put under quarantine.

@Otterly should be better equipped than me for further eventual commentaries on this.
Could not have summarised it any better actually :)
I am just trying to get your reasoning. Do you think that chinese genes , air pollution and smoking make it that deadlier? In that case why did the flue not wipe them out 20 years ago?
China wasn’t hit badly by the 1918 flu. No one really knows why but I’m sure I’ve read that they are more prone to smaller lung infections but less to the severe flu of that type. I’ll see if I can find the paper I was reading. Yes to air pollution and smoking - both damage lung tissue anyway, but both also increase the number of ACE2 receptors in the lung (I posted the papers a few pages back.)
So it’s like a perfect storm of shit luck, smoking, air pollution, poor public health and losing the genetic lottery this time around.
Some you win, in terms of susceptibility, and some you lose. That’s why evolution works - you have variation within a population and natural selection pressure acts using that variation as a raw material. You unleash something like myxomatosis on rabbits and almost all might die, but the ones that don’t are more likely to have and pass resistance on and so it goes. Same with urban rats and warfarin; it used to wipe them out, now they sprinkle it in their cornflakes and come back for more. It’s thought that the high rate of cystic fibrosis in western populations could be due to the heterozygous estate offering an advantage, and of course you all learn the sickle cell/malaria thing in school.
We will survive this, but I think it’s going to be a rough 18m or so.

It's funny because Corona started in china which has national healthcare and should prove that every country needs to rethink their health systems in case of a pandemic. Keep on keeping on bernie bro I'm sure countries with nationalized healthcare will totally do better than america with corona chan and it's not like the government could decide to flip the bill for a pandemic or anything. It totally doesn't prove that globalization isn't a panacea and it is necessary to keep the necesaties made in your country so there isn't a shortage of materials when it comes time to need it.

You have to pay for healthcare in China. It's not socialized.

That doesn't really apply to healthcare because it's mostly infrastructure driven. Which means the parts that ARE subject to scarcity are actually really cheap and plentiful already. Fucking hell if OUR shit ass economy can handle it YOUR "everyone got jobs" country has no fucking excuse. Your healthcare is worse than SPAIN's. You should be deeply ashamed by that fact!

Why does this feel like its only just beginning. It is very dribs and drabs today but it feels like its going to really kick off next week. Containment does not feel like it is working in Europe.

We're not even TRYING to contain it here in spain, most experts just realized at this point asymptomatic and unknown carriers are fucking everywhere and we've gone straight to "caso 2" (post outbreak) protocols. Which yes btw does mean spain's pretty much unofficially declared it a pandemic faster than the fucking WHO.

I'm not a bernie bro fuck that commie shit. But if our healthcare could go through the 1918 pandemic, 2 fascist dictatorships with concentration camps in the second case and one of the bloodiest civil wars in the history of humanity, not to mention the militias and terrorists besieging us. Fuck me mate how the hell does yours collapse under bleeping pangolin lung?! Outside of pneumonia cases this only needs PARACETAMOL for treatment. I could make that shit at home if I were crazy enough to try!

Also if you think China's public healthcare is in a state even fucking COMPARABLE to the west's your kind of dementia is worrying. It's not shit 'cause its public, it's shit 'cause its china. Hell even here we're constantly having to fight for transparency to keep our healthcare healthy. But that's the thing, china thinks transparency is a musical instrument, which is why they suck at EVERYTHING.

It is a socialized system, but the majority of people don’t trust the doctors. Doctors underpaid, lines are long. Sounds kinda similar to Canada, huh.

It's not really socialized tho

In China, patients do pay their medical bills. Although public hospitals are owned by the state, only a small share of their costs are covered directly by taxes. The remainder comes from insurance payments and the patients themselves.
Similar to Canada, almost the entire Chinese population is covered by state-run health insurance. But since the coverage doesn’t extend to many essential services, people still have to pay a large share of medical expenses from their own pockets.

I just took a look at Reddit, and holy shit, r/Coronavirus and r/China_Flu have completely blown up in the last 24 hours; posts to those two subs are about 80% of my feed right now. And, as expected, the exceptionalism is off the charts.

So I'm just going to stay here in the Kiwi Plague Bunker, because as autistic as it can get here, it's still saner than anywhere else.

It's the result of every socialized system, it fucking broke because suprise suprise healthcare is more expensive than thought. It is still entirely run by china they just realized they needed to charge their people more because money got lost in bureaucracy. You can't compare it to our system and you most certainley won't get away with playing the no tru scotsman argument here. Include the fact that china was able to shut it's citizens in and has a level of control over the populace that most countries dream for and you realize that even communism isn't going to fix it.

The point Is the virus will show how the world not just the U.S. that we need to rethink healthcare. Also if you really feel the need to bitch about the U.S. focuss on our culture and that we already have casses of people being infected and lying about it because they wanted to get home. Hell if you really need to bush muh socialism focus on the fact that the minimum wage employees will have to expose themselves to it and will turn supermarkets into virus traps because they don't have paid sick or vacation time.

Fucking hell if OUR shit ass economy can handle it YOUR "everyone got jobs" country has no fucking excuse. Your healthcare is worse than SPAIN's. You should be deeply ashamed by that fact!

Is it your opinion that in the end Spain will take less damage from this than the U.S.?

Travis AFB update

Infected individuals in the QZ here are about to be dumped into the old base dormitories that have been unoccupied due to mold an general unfit living conditions.

And the world keeps making our crazy ass bunch or incompetent bastards in charge look decent by comparison... Why even? *sigh* please tell me they're revamping that shit first and not literally just dropping the bastards in a system without reverse pressure rooms.

If New York wants to kill itself just to spite trump, than good, do it

I need to rant for a second. I already mentioned how I'm fascinated and horrified by the Dem's incompetence but let me put it in context.

Recently spain has gotten a buncha new parties finally and moved away for the 2 party system. Shit's gotten much better since btw our economy is better than ever, which is still shit, but less shit than ever. One of those on the extreme right is Vox. Vox harbors honest-to-god self-identified fascists on their rank. Their boss was a judge who lost the licence after letting a guy go free when said guy had been caught by the cops having slashed and his wife with a knife and currently seeking his own kid while wielding a gun with intent to murder said child. This crazy mofo let that guy go saying it was "a minor marital dispute" and "the state shouldn't intervene in such private matters"... yeah Chupp eat your fucking heart out. You can imagine how much time the court of appeals took reversing that one and making damned sure this guy didn't get to judge anything anymore.

Well THAT crazy fucker has openly stated since he knows nothing of biology he's just letting the experts handle it and his fascist ass subordinates have been cooperating in ensuring our healthcare can handle it. Hey democrats! HOW THE FUCK DID YOU FALL LOWER THAN THESE CRAZY BASTARDS?!

Calm your tits.

You're right. My throat and head want to kill me, I had to skip a whole day of carnaval because I was too busy shitting my heart out, I'm drunk as fuck, and for the first time since I was alive I'm feeling patriotic pride. Yeah I'm sorry but I do think I'mma be going full exceptional tonight. I think this might be my last post for today but I can't promise anything. Also my dear beloved Corona-chan. You are still best girl. But please, please just give me tomorrow. Just let me enjoy carnaval and I'm all yours to rape to your hearts content. :(

EDIT:
Is it your opinion that in the end Spain will take less damage from this than the U.S.?

Corona's officially been making the rounds here for at least a month and all we got is people like me cursing our luck without any symptom more severe than the flu a guy with a severe case of pneumonia and a buncha foreigners in UCI. You barely even started and every damned democrat led area is already collapsing socially and in healthcare. I don't care if you use public healthcare or private healthcare with public insurance or whatever but god damned get your shit together we have some really crazy bastards in government and our president is a fucking spineless bafoon licking merkel's ass. We should not be better than you at anything.

I feel more sympathy for this dog than most of the population of China.

Another coronavirus infection confirmed in the Helsinki region

A working-age Finnish woman infected with corona arrived several days ago from northern Italy. The new infection has no relation to the one previously found.

Another coronavirus infection has been confirmed in Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District on Friday. According to HUS, a working-age Finnish woman who was infected with corona arrived several days ago from northern Italy. The infected person returned home after sampling yesterday. She has been instructed to remain isolated at home.
HUS Infectious Doctors, in association with THL and the communicable disease units of the municipalities, are investigating the affected. Work has already started. Those exposed are personally contacted. While traveling from Italy to Finland, the person has not been exposed to others, her symptoms have begun later in Finland.
Once the number of people exposed has been determined in the next few days, HUS experts will work with authorities to assess the overall situation. According to HUS, at this stage, no more can be said.
The first Finnish coronary infestation was confirmed on Wednesday. That infection was also from Milan in northern Italy. According to HUS, a Finnish working-age woman sought treatment herself. The febrile patient was reported to be in ward care but in good condition.

Mika Salminen, health director at THL, tells IS that the cases are not related.
- They weren't dealing with each other. The connecting factor is only the same exposure area.
