Biden projected as winner in South Carolina, halting momentum of front-runner Sanders

GREENVILLE, S.C (Reuters) - Joe Biden was projected to win South Carolina’s Democratic primary on Saturday, reviving his faltering White House campaign and halting the surge of national front-runner Bernie Sanders, who appeared headed to a distant second-place finish.

Television networks and Edison Research, which conducted exit polls in South Carolina, projected Biden as the winner as soon as voting closed in the Southern state. Exit polls showed the former vice president beating Sanders among a wide range of demographic and ideological groups.

Biden needed a decisive win in South Carolina, where his popularity among black voters proved decisive in a state where more than half of the Democratic electorate is black, after poor showings in the first two nominating contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.

The win gives him new momentum as the Democratic race to find a challenger to Republican President Donald Trump now broadens quickly, with Super Tuesday primaries in 14 states that will award one-third of the available national delegates in a single day.

Sanders, a progressive U.S. senator from Vermont who had become the national front-runner, appeared likely to finish second in the state. Tom Steyer, a billionaire-turned-activist who spent heavily in South Carolina, appeared likely to finish third.

Nearly eight of 10 voters in South Carolina said they have a favorable view of Biden, compared with five of 10 who see rival Sanders favorably, exit polls showed. The polls also found about six of 10 of South Carolina voters said influential black congressman James Clyburn’s endorsement of Biden on Wednesday was a factor in their decision.

About half want a candidate who will return to Democratic President Barack Obama’s policies, a key argument of Biden, who was Obama’s vice president.

I'm sure the Obama connection is what they like about Biden.
Black's usually just vote how they are told. The DNC told them to vote Biden and they did.
Put a D next to a glass of water and it will get 90% of the black vote.

I wonder what it is about Sanders that SC blacks don’t like? What is it about Biden do they love?

Two things.

One, Sanders is Jewish. African-Americans are very anti-Semitic, in general.

Two, Sanders has no connections to established Southern black social structures, like pastors. So he does not get positive word of mouth from these establishments, which hurts him. Part of why Hillary Clinton won so hard was that she courted these establishments heavily.

Plus she carries around hot sauce in her purse like black people!

Wow never thought Biden would win SC this bigly. Sanders coming within 10% of Biden would have been a huge win for him and a big loss for Biden. Bernie will be fine and still win the most delegates, but I'm not sure he can get to the number to keep from being ratfucked unless Warren drops out soon. He really needs her voters.

Mayor Pete, Klobuchar, and Steyer all all done when Bloomberg enters on super Tuesday. They (especially Pete) needed a poor showing from Biden today so he'd drop out and they can get their share of his voters.

I think Warren will stay in the race to spite Sanders because she is just that kind of bitch.

I wish the media would stop pretending that this is an event and changes momentum. Everyone knew this was going to happen and it doesn't mean anything for Bernie. The degree Bernie lost is notable but I don't think it means much for other states, momentum as it was is already set for Tuesday. This was just a foregone conclusion. Bernie has so far shown dare I say a Trump-like resistance to getting stumped by a number of things that should've ended him. He may even win Texas and Virginia. North Carolina isn't even safe for Joe anymore. That said, I don't see him sailing to and through the convention. There are enough speedbumps that he won't avoid them all.
