Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Above 70% ethanol will nuke most things, which is why every scientist working in a lab with anything biological like that will keep a plant mister with 70% ethanol in and douse everything in it constantly. Something tells me Jasmin may not be an actual scientist (shocking, I know...)
Also if you’re making your own sanitiser from gel and ethanol Make sure you’re keeping the EtOH concentration over 70% or it’ll be much less effective.

What's the difference between ethanol (>70%) and soap (NaOH?), then? In the context of keeping your hands clean from both bacteria and viruses.

Internal memo from the US office of veteran's affairs on COVID-19. Although there is a designated building called out in the memo, it is currently empty.

Didnt snoop enough to find out what kind of scientist she was.

That account is pure cancer, holy shit. As far as I went back not a peep about science, just idiotic pop culture bullshit and hating the country she lives in. Until she decided to be really wrong on the Internet.

Anyway, just back from the local Costco in the midwest. Fairly normal traffic, one white lady in a mask, tons of Chinese (but that's normal), nothing out of stock, no panic. Things cool so far.

You can't or don't always want to wash everything in your lab carefully with soap.

This. While some viruses can resist some sanitizers, even HIV inactivates in the face of enough alcohol.

If this person is a scientist in the STEM sense they need to be made not a scientist.

Well, some consider sociology a science. I guess.

CVs have a lipid envelope, they're susceptible to detergents. Alcohol will denature their proteins quite quickly. Bleach murders them too.

Alcohol has trouble with shit like norovirus (non-enveloped) but then that's not what we're talking about here is it.

Ethanol disrupts membranes of bacteria and capsids (the shell) of viruses.
soap helps to dislodge stuff. What actually does most of the cleaning is the physical rubbing of hands to help the foam and water lift stuff off.
So a lab bench you can squirt with a mist of ethanol way easier than scrubbing with soap, it evaporates (or gets passed through a flame and burnt off) and there you go, everything is dead. but for hands, soapy water is probably better. Just look up how to wash your hands properly - there will be loads of clips online.

A low-level bureaucrat or someone that’s actually a ways up the Iranian political totem pole?

Don't know, but keep 'em coming, I say, especially any of the fucks who took the Embassy and took our people hostage in 1979. Remember it well. Actually met one of the former hostages about 25 years ago.

A thought.

Yeah, we in the USA always go through stages with flus, viruses, etc. 1. There's a virus going around! Some people died! 2. The sky is falling! We're all going to die! 3. No, we aren't all going to die, not many at all. We have a handle on the situation. 4. Okay, we know what needs to be done, and we're doing it. Let's incorporate the lessons learned and move on. We're mostly in stage two right now. Many individuals are in stage three. I am, anyway. As time goes by most people will progress, and in due time as a nation we'll reach stage four, just in time for the next shitstorm to hit.

@XYZpdq - Always useful to hear of local/online shortages, and facts. It's "the sky is falling!" sentiment that I would humbly ask be avoided. We can always use the facts to help us adjust to the situation. Providing facts is a service to all. Hysteria is counterproductive. Personally, I do what I can to keep putting things in perspective. Believe this helps many without such experience, living alone, or who have worries/concerns.

More deaths reported in the King County, Washington nursing home cluster.

And now her boss has forced her to take that YouTube video down in case it causes a scandal, because that's what's most important right now, right?

I did download a 720p local copy of her video, but 263MB seems like a massive waste of storage space for the farms. I could try and hucklebuck something a little more manageable (like .webm) with VLC, otherwise I'm open to recommendations for better conversion options.

ETA: @EriMin take care of yourself, and maybe let myself or someone else know if you'd prefer we didn't spread your video around. Documenting is all well and good, but you're cool and personally I'd rather not just impulsively do something that could cause more trouble for you right now.

Saudi Arabia has had it's first confirmed case of COVID-19
Google Translate said:
Riyadh, Rajab 07, 1441 AH corresponding to 02 March 2020 AD, SPA
The Ministry of Health announced today, Monday, the emergence of laboratory results confirming the registration of the first case of infection with the new Coronavirus Covid-19 for a citizen coming from Iran through the Kingdom of Bahrain, and did not disclose at the Saudi port about his presence.
The Ministry of Health said that, within the framework of the established precautionary measures, the Ministry sent an infection control team at once, to examine the citizen, and to take a sample for a laboratory examination through which it was confirmed that he was infected with the virus.
The Ministry assures everyone that the situation is currently isolated in the hospital, and it is being dealt with and providing the health service in accordance with the approved health procedures.
In addition, all contacts of the infected person were identified, and samples were taken from them for examination by the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control, and all results will be announced upon completion of the examination.
Health called upon everyone to communicate with the "Health Continuity 937" center in the event of any desire to inquire about the virus, stressing that information is taken from its official sources and not to be drawn into the rumors.

Quick question.

So folks in Ireland and other areas far removed from China have come down with Kung-Flu.

I know people travel for many reasons, but why TF are the Irish going to China? Honestly I wasn't aware China was such a popular place to visit. I know it has its nicer areas and the New Year festivals are something else (only reason why I would go)...but generally it's a commie Big Brother shithole?

Several Islamic scholars have issued fatwas on vaccines and modern medicine in that country.

This is possibly worse than China with it's TCM and incompetence.

You've GOT to be shitting me. That is a quantum leap past retarded. And Muslims wonder why so many people think so badly of their religion. Seventh-century thinking is not compatible with advanced societies.

How long before it hits the homeless population?

The shelves in my town have now been wiped of most liquid handsoap, all the hand santizer, and all kinds of hand wipes. Just the hand santizer was out in the middle of last week. Seem the public consciousness to the virus has finally been raised since more cases started popping up randomly across the UK from people coming from Italy. Again, glad I stocked up several weeks ago. Glad I kept abreast of the situation here and got a bit paranoid about the possible consequences of a larger outbreak ahead of time.

I just assume that all countries will be blessed by corona-chan eventually. I'm more interested to see what scientists are cooking up to combat the virus, and the different paths they're taking with their own proposed cures. Sadly, those things take time (and maybe underreported by MSM, because increasing infection rates can drive more clicks than science shit). It's nice that Kiwis here are able to share the few articles and even post explainers (looking at you, @Otterly and @EmuWarsVeteran) that do focus on those. This is why this thread is awesome.

Another reason the thread is awesome - all the great people who provide a shitload of information, facts, and analysis. Believe if more people worldwide could read this thread they would learn one hell of a lot and be better able to fight off the "The sky is falling" feeling.

Thanks again to everyone. In a way, we are doing God's work by helping people fight off hysteria and terror with facts and common sense. And, as always, thanks to Null for hosting us. 👍

Sister Mary has it. She was the face of the hostage takers and is a vice president nowadays. Sadly, though, she's only 59.
