The only time I've really approved of swearing in Star Trek was the few times we see, for instance, Picard get angry and say "damn", which for him is rare and shows how frustrated he is.
Or if they meet humans who live outside the federation, or who have been cryogenically frozen since a time before the federation. Those people would naturally be far cruder than Starfleet officers.

And of course, the best use of a swear word in any movie ever, the scene in Star Trek Generations where Data, struggling with his newly activated emotion chip, yells "OH SHIT!" when the Enterprise was about to crash. That one made me laugh but it also made a lot of sense given what was going on in the film.

Discovery trying to shoehorn in f bombs was embarrassing as hell.
