Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

An acquaintance in Edinburgh, recently returned from Italy, has self isolated due to a cough, only three days after his return to work as a taxi driver. His decision to go out (where eludes me) at the weekend is not looking so good in hindsight. Others who were out with him complain of symptoms. Posting for the benefit of Scottish kiwis.

Don't know what China's criteria for calling someone recovered is so I might be completely wrong, but I wonder if some of these reinfections are the result of false negatives. We've heard stories about people having 3, 4, 5 negative tests before they get a correct diagnosis, so I wouldn't think it's impossible that people are incorrectly testing negative at the tail end of the disease and then relapsing after they go home and aren't getting supportive care anymore.

This is what I assume, since China's RT-PCR tests have a very low sensitivity. Which is odd for RT-PCR since they usually have a quite low false negative rate. It apparently needs a very high viral load from a nasopharyngeal swab in order to test positive.

When someone's asymptomatic, they're unlikely to have that anymore. So it's likely less of a case of reinfection and more of a case of not getting over the original infection, which then comes back.

The situation in Iran, from @aliostad as he does a great english summary

Particular highlight:

As soon as we start widespread testing, the numbers will jump - the only question is by how much? Places like Finland and Sweden are handling it terribly - family in Sweden are telling me that the news is saying there’s no asymptomatic spread, and there’s no quarantine for anyone coming back from a risk area. Apparently a doctor at the akademiska hospital came straight back from northern Italy and to work. They’re fucked
As I said before, I honestly think that this true of Canada as well.
Seems to be it

At this rate this megathread is going to hit 20k posts in the not to distant future, at least we all get to watch the trashfire together.

Getting infected with deadly virus from around the world is part and parcel with living in modern dystopia large city.

Second case of the virus in Quebec, from man who travelled to India (worse part is that it sounds like it really worse than they are saying there, like Iran).

To be blunt; Its because we have gone out of our way to ignore it, so many of the only cases we are picking up are people who are dropping dead then retroactively being declared killed by it.

That's not true, that's it's been ignored.

Ten out of twelve deaths happened in WA state, more specifically, nine in King County and one in Snohomish County. Six of the nine deaths that occurred in King county were linked to one place: a nursing facility in Kirkland, WA. The man who died in Sacramento had just come back from a cruise to Mexico. Also, a majority of these people who died were either old and/or had pre existing health issues so it killed them pretty quickly. I don't know how you can say that we went out of our way to ignore it. Of course we are only finding out people died from the coronavirus after the fact since there is no reliable test readily available for it and these deaths occurred before most Americans knew it was even circulating.

So to answer the original question: because it hit a nursing home with old, sick people.

Alright kiwis powerlevel or not I might as well say that I've been notified that I may have been in contact with someone who tested positive for the coronavirus in the doctor's office and have been told to self isolate for 2 weeks. I'm immune comprised and take immunosuppressant drugs. I was trying so hard to stay healthy during this and I've potentially been got at the doctors office for a routine appointment. This feels like some sick joke.

I'm gonna isolate and if I develop symptoms I'll keep you posted. I mean I might as well, it's not like I'm going outside for a while.

Gah. Fucking muppet. Tell him to call 111 so they can trace contacts - there’s a drive through test station at the western general but he will need to be sent there, he cant just rock up.
Is travelling to Italy for a February ski break correlated with being a massive bellend? Discuss.

How many American people here go to the doctor for every sniffle, vs go only when things don’t clear up? God knows I don’t. The last time I did go was when a cough didn’t clear up for two months, ended up wasting money on an xray to confirm I didn’t have pneumonia, and was told it was bronchitis and would eventually go away on its own. And in another two months it did.

I always laugh at the ads for the anti-virals that you have to take within 48 hrs of symptoms for it to be effective. Who the hell can tell the difference between a cold and the flu in the first 48 hours? A family member has had each person at their work take a day or two off this week due to some kind of crud going through. They’re home today. Maybe it was corona. Maybe it wasn’t. Since each has recovered uneventfully, none of them went to a doctor, they just spent the worst of it at home staying hydrated and eating soup.

Pretty sure from the way it’s popping up here and there it’s fully unleashed in the population. Unless someone is in a bad way it’s unlikely the sick will bother with a doctor visit.

"Look at this moron telling people it isn't that bad and they SHOULD (not the actual statement "will") go to work!"
The person you quoted didn't say that. That's my point. You got overexcited and linked an article about a completely different argument.

Edit: The lie in Sissy's statement is where he said " they get better by going to work".
That's not what the article you linked is about. Even if it was, you're at best derailing the thread with pedantry. But you're still wrong, so it doesn't matter.
On the image that you yourself put in your post,

You said they didn't say it, and then posted the exact quote where he says it almost word for word lol. You're digging yourself into a hole for no reason on something super pointless, it's weird. I think you're being sensitive.

Gah. Fucking muppet.

Oh yeah.

Tell him to call 111 so they can trace contacts - there’s a drive through test station at the western general but he will need to be sent there, he cant just rock up.

Apparently people are coming in hazmat suits to test him tomorrow. And then presumably a bunch more people.

Give me an address so I can send you a box of scratch and sniff stickers. I want you coughing all over them and resending each to the loved ones of elected officials.

Sounds like you have the time for this project. Enjoy quarantine, most of us will be there soon.

I hope you don't think this is OT but you need to keep it in the forefront of your mind at all times.

Example I've seen lately: People wondering how WA residents were going to go the polls in Nov. Duh, if you fucking really gave a shit you'd know we mail our ballots and have been for a decade now.
That said I do worry about the outdated primary caucus system. It seems downright dangerous these days. There is no reason to rely on the votes of the few people who belong to a particular party and could get time off work to assemble somewhere to determine the candidates. Open primaries would be best. It works elsewhere, why not here?

This shit’s going to last into April, isn’t it?
This is just the first time this particular type has gone through. Probably will continue to trace it through June, and it will become like H1N1, SARS, etc. In a couple of years it will have mutated enough to do another one.

Trudeau is saying we are following World Health Organization, which has worked wonderfully thus far.

Trudeau says 'knee-jerk reactions' won't stop spread of COVID-19

Canada has no plan to ban foreign travellers arriving from coronavirus-affected regions

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada won't ban foreign travellers arriving from countries grappling with COVID-19 outbreaks, adding that "knee-jerk reactions" won't help to stop the spread of the virus.

Canada's approach differs from the protocols adopted by some of our closest allies.

U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed the United States is experiencing a low number of infections because it sealed its borders to travellers coming from outbreak-affected countries.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Thursday that coronavirus-related travel bans on foreigners coming from China and Iran will be extended to South Korea.

Australian citizens and permanent residents from those countries can enter Australia, but will be required to self-isolate for two weeks.

Trudeau was asked today if Canada would take similar steps.

"We recognize there are countries that make different decisions. The decisions we make are based on the best recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the tremendous health experts who work within Canada and around the world," he told reporters after an event in Toronto.

"We know that keeping Canadians safe needs to be done in the right way and we're going to keep doing things that actually keep Canadians safe. There is a lot of misinformation out there, there is a lot of knee-jerk reaction that isn't keeping people safe. That is having real, challenging impacts on communities, on community safety."

There are now 37 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Canada: 13 in British Columbia, 22 in Ontario and two in Quebec.

Trudeau said the government's approach is to inform Canadians on how best to protect their families, and to act on the advice of health experts to develop a response that is "active and up-to-date every step of the way."

During a briefing with reporters Wednesday, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam said again that sealing off borders is not an effective approach to containing the virus. She said border measures work better when they focus on educating travellers about the symptoms, and what they should do if they get sick.

No travel bans
To date, Canada has not imposed any travel bans. Instead, it's asking travellers returning from Hubei, China — the epicentre of the outbreak — and Iran, where a significant outbreak has occurred, to self-isolate for two weeks after they arrive here.

Global Affairs Canada has issued travel advisories for various countries which are updated regularly to reflect changing risk levels.

"We believe that travellers and Canadians are quite sensitized, so they're presenting to the health system in a very appropriate way, being fully alerted," Tam said.

"It's also a balance for the health system ... There has to be some guidance as to how you triage patients going through the health system. The border actually is a great place to tell them which phone numbers to call to call ahead, so that your emergency rooms or your clinics are not inundated should you not be required to show up as well."

Meanwhile in London (the UK one)... Yeah, that's definitely gonna work.
Boris saying how he shook hands with the infected and is still alive, so just wash your hands folks and everything will be fine and dandy. Lying comes as a easy as breathing to him, as per usual.
And HSBCevacuating the whole floor on Thursday, because an employee told them they're infected over the weekend (this one is from the Metro, mind, so I'm hoping they just made up this 4 days delay).
I wanna go to Spain!

More cases in spain, over 260. Important part is, 13 from a residence in madrid, 9 of them patients, 1 a worker. Dunno the others they didn't specify I'm guessing family members. 1 of the residents died tuesday and got diagnosed post mortem (that's why they checked the rest) there's 70 patients total in the residence, all of them over 80, and I already mentioned the air of madrid is the worst of spain. They quarantined the fuck out of everything and everyone but most agree this is the shit hit the fan moment.

Also on a funnier note, labor minystry just posted a prevention protocol that was frankly ridiculous, and healthcare ministry actually officially called them out for being morons (politely) and they retracted it. Fucking everyone's been laughing their asses off about that shit. It literally told people to leave the building if they suspected an outbreak it was exceptional as fuck I'll see if I can find a copy cause hot daym.
