Apparently it's because it deals with physical/sexual abuse (between lesbians/brute men, I guess?? AniDB has it listed as having shoujo-ai elements apparently)? I haven't seen it for myself, but I've noticed a lot of people/anitubers don't like it, though it has a decent score everywhere I look.

The first episode has the main character being tortured and sexually abused by the female wardens of the prison she is sent to. Just some shocky slock to make otakus watch the rest of the show which doesn’t have any prison sexploitation after that. Same situation as Goblin Slayer.

It makes me question now how fags like Zac and Hope and the rest of their fuckbuddies ever made it out of the 1990s as anime fans. Cross Ange btw is actually a pretty good show, minus a poor initial first episode. Heck, if one were to continue, they'd find a show that is surprisingly positive in terms of female representation and empowerment, and it does it in a way that isn't demeaning to men either. Basically the opposite of what Chapman accuses it of.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing Sunrise do another season of it (though I really would like them to do another season of Valvrave, personally speaking).

Nah it ain't. The writing is laughably atrocious and the characters are all unlikable. It's like Code Geass but way worst. lol

Cross Ange was basically Darling in the Franxx and Shield Hero combined before either of them came out.. Main villain is called Embyro and he can control people and uses it on women. He made Ange orgasm and fondle herself and other stuff for his amusement. Despite all that the backlash wasn't anywhere near as bad as Shield Hero, maybe since this sojus mentality wasnt fully in the western industry back then. It came out right before Gamergate happened. If it came out today, though? Well, we'll see how Redo of Healer turns out.
