Coronavirus: Five more positive tests in Scotland

Five more people have tested positive for coronavirus, the Scottish government has confirmed.

It brings the total number of positive tests in Scotland to 16.

Two new cases have been reported in Lanarkshire, with an increase of one case in Lothian, Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and Grampian.

Across the UK, 206 people have tested positive for Covid-19. Two people - who both had underlying health problems - have died with the disease.

The increase in Scotland matches the jump seen on Friday, the biggest in a single day since the first reported case on Sunday.

In total, 1,664 of the 1,680 tests in Scotland have come back negative.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said she expects the number of people diagnosed with Covid-19 to increase "very rapidly" in the coming days.

But she said she hoped to push back the spread of the virus to limit the peak of the outbreak until the spring and summer months.

It comes as Scotstoun sports complex in Glasgow is shut for cleaning after a rugby player tested positive for the virus after using the facility.

The woman was a member of the Scotland women's team which trained at Scotstoun stadium on Friday.

Her team's Six Nations match against France, which was due to be played at Scotstoun, has been cancelled.

No matter the situation in Hubei, hopefully it is actually better ( I know) they will claim all further infections are not caused by their bat-eating population but by outside tourists, which the WHO will parrot. They're already praising the Chinese response based purely on internal statistics and telling the rest of the world to implement similar measures.

I mean, the coronavirus is bad for the economy, but can be pretty good for the average working man, assuming he survives the outbreak. To hearken back to the Middle Ages, when the black death rolled across Europe and wiped out a third of the population, a lot of wealthy lords found themselves without enough peasants to work the farms they had. What happened was that these lords actually had to offer the remaining peasants better conditions and higher payments for their work, to encourage their peasants to stay and the peasants of other lords to come work their fields instead.

I imagine that if the coronavirus ends up being as destructive as the black death, we'll end up with a labour shortage, which indirectly benefits the working classes. It would mean that employers would have to offer competitive wages and hours. Plus, it also means that housing prices will potentially drop as well. Every cloud has it's silver lining and all that.

That was mostly a phenomenon in certain regions in Western Europe such as England and the Low Countries. If you where a peasant in say, Iberia, Poland, Bohemia, Hungary, the Carpathians, or near anywhere in eastern Europe your life would probably suck just as much after as before the Plague came and began ravaging the land every few decades for the next few centuries. And in many cases even more so.

There's also the issue that the modern world economy is heavily demand driven and less people means less products being consumed. And in the developed world items like more foodstuffs and meats that became more common and accessible following the plague due to more farmland that could be turned into pasture are already very accessible.

The Islamic world was devastated along with China, India, and central Asia but the same arguable gains that occurred in Western Europe didn't stick. And even those arguable and short term gains where nothing compared to the benefits of the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions. The only place I could see benefiting from depopulation are areas where overpopulation is seriously stressing access to the most basic resources and that's not the developed world.
