Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Guess it's time for the "do not take counsel of your fears" pump-up. Also adding DO NOT RUN SCARED.

As a group, believe most KFers stand very little chance of catching this virus in the first place, and the few who may catch the virus are likely to do just fine.

Am sure folks are using the info presented here for a measure of reassurance, and hope they are sharing the info to put the lid on hysteria.

Keep putting things into perspective. Looking at the latest live feed, total cases 109, 727. Of those, 80, 699 are in China. So we have 29, 028 cases among the other six billion of us. 3801 dead, 3097 in China. 704 among the other six billion of us.

People fear what they don't understand. Anyone who's been following this thread for a while should understand that the sky isn't falling.

And I'd go back to reference a comment a wise person made here. We aren't seeing too many "leaders" going around wearing masks, PPE, etc. And a number of these "leaders" are elderly people with health issues. Wonder why - could it be their respective intelligence services keep providing the no-bullshit facts and projections? The intel services have access to certain info we don't have.

We got this. Yes, we do.

I was looking at past flu deaths in the UK a few days ago and everywhere was saying 30k for the Asian Flu in 1969 but the government's plan has it listed at 80k: https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...-uk-prepares-for-infectious-disease-outbreaks

If it truly was 80k in 1969 then 100k in 2020 doesn't seem like it'd cause major issues. Nobody associates 1969 with a flu so it can't have had much real effect.

Asian flu was late 1950s. Hong Kong flu was 1968-1970 and it was absolutely devastating. Anyone who lived through that period will remember it. It was one of the big pandemics of the 20th century.

Not your personal army and all that, but if you are in freedom land and currently reading this can you PLEASE call your senator/congress people and tell them to get up off their useless asses and get the CDC to at least allow states to test if they are too incompetent to distribute and process it themselves. Start off by being constructive before showing the magnitude of your frustration. Use phrases like criminal negligence and talk about how you'd never vote for a representative that stood by as they let bureaucratic red tape kill peoples grandparents.

Welp, three new cases found in Poland. An older guy who most likely was infected when visiting a relative hospitalized abroad, and another person (young man) returning from Italy. The third case is somewhat unclear so far, all I know is, it's a woman who was moved to hospital from quarantine, but there's nothing about the origins of her infection so far. Waiting for more info.

They don't have the authority.

First call your Governors office then complain to the White House, because, you know, Executive branch.
Then be embarrassed when they tell you that states are already testing on their own.

And CDC found a workaround for the reagent issue-

That sucks.

I've never dealt with someone under an active quarantine before. Do post updates and help the rest of us understand what's happening. Some of the questions that will come up over time include:

- Are you allowed out of your home?
- How do you get food?
- Are you allowed to keep your pets?
- Is there a curfew in place?
- Are the police actively patrolling the streets looking for the infected?
- Are they checking door to door?
For now:

- People are allowed to go out of their homes but are encouraged to stay home as much as possible. This means you can go to work, go to buy groceries, you can even go to have a coffee at a bar etc. However, if you've tested positive or you have the typical flu-like symptoms you're not allowed to go out. It's still not clear how they'll check infected people. The government and authorities are calling for people to be responsible and stay indoors.
- No discussion of pets whatsoever, I didn't even realise it was a matter of discussion until I checked this thread. You'll take my dogs out of my cold, dead hands.
- No curfew per se but pubs, bars and restaurants are open only from 6am to 6pm. Museums, discos, churches etc. are closed.
- Nobody is going around checking people in the streets, that would be a huge waste of resources and I'm sure people wouldn't cooperate peacefully. Right now the procedure is as follows: if you have a fever above 37.5°C (99.5°F) you have to self-isolate in your home for at least 14 days. You are absolutely not allowed to go to A&E nor to the GP, you have to call your regional emergency number and from there they'll tell you what to do. If you're really sick they come and pick you up in hazmat suits, from what I've seen.
- Nobody is checking door to door. As I said, it would be incredibly wasteful.

A few more things: no masses, weddings, funeral are allowed. Airports and train stations are still open and operative although a few hours ago Alitalia cancelled all flights to Malpensa, one of the biggest airports in the country located near Milan. The presidents of the regions and provinces in the red zone are urging people not to panic buy groceries in supermarkets as they're stockpiled and "We're not going to war", as the president of Lombardy Attilio Fontana said. A few politicians have been infected, such as the president of Piedmont and Luca Zingaretti, president of Lazio (Rome's region) and the leader of one of the main opposition parties Partito Democratico. Here is an article explaining what is and isn't allowed in the red zones. This is the official presidential decree that imposes the red zones.

In a prison in Modena (a city in Emilia Romagna, one of the regions with a few quarantined provinces), and in many other prisons across the country, the inmates are currently rioting because authorities haven't put into place proper precautions to stop spread the virus in prisons. You can watch a video here.

Finally, if you guys want to keep up to date with the Italian situation by using Italian sources: the two main newspapers are Il Corriere della Sera and La Repubblica. They both have local editions (I personally prefer Il Corriere for local papers, especially when it comes to Milan). You can use deepl.com to translate the articles.

I agree that the worst thing we can do is panic, but I fear we have failed to be quick enough to slow down the spread of the Virus in the US. For example, since most schools still are not closing yet, that means they will become hotbeds of infection and (more likely) have Teenagers become Asymptomatic Carriers that infect their parents and even worse their grandparents. And I have to be honest: I just think most of our leaders and intelligence agencies are dumb at this point; Our intelligence has wasted the last 4 years on Russian Bots, has gotten partially outmaneuvered in the middle east, had no plan for Putin seizing Crimea, and worst of all had all their agents compromised in China few years back. And as for leaders you can see how Iran's leadership is dying right as we speak; For the US the Virus is too early to have spread that much to infect them, so we will see if they took precautions to keep themselves safe. Again, you are right that it is a terrible idea to panic, I am just planning things at this point with the assumption the US will struggle with this.

Regardless, stay safe; I know how you have a higher risk than most others on here.

And now this pathetic report from New Zealand, stuff.co.nz on 8 March 2020 - a country where there are only 5 cases and is yet reporting the health care service breaking under this? Heaven forbid they actually have an epidemic.

"We are stretched. We are really stretched," said Powell.

"It's not just our doctors and nurses, it's our laboratory staff and our radiologists."

So either he's lying so as to abuse this for lobbying, in which case SHAMEFUR DISPRAY! Or this is one of those cases qhere despite the lack of real cases the population has gone so outrageously apeshit they've collapsed the medical system by panicking over petty bollocks and getting tested for a fucking rash. In which case, SHAMEFUR DISPRAY!!! NZ get your shit together.

All Danes in Northern Italy are now to return home as fast a possible and quarantine themselves
Danish source:

Self isolation=good.
Mass fleeing from an infected area=THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!
I hope at least those danes are better than the Chinks and Iranians.

We will never have an exact count, at some point mass serological testing or a POC (pint of care) test will arrive and we can get better numbers. Otherwise it’ll be subtract the projected flu numbers from the death toll from pneumonia etc

You have enhanced immunity to the specific strain of what you had and very similar strains.

There are cases now where I am. As in, in the same building complex. Family members place of work closed and people quarantined. From here I reckon three weeks to serious Widespread outbreak, five or six to the point where the Nhs can’t treat everyone. Watch for that point getting almost reached and when it does that is the point to stay home. Keep your elders and vulnerable (pregnant, chronically ill, diabetic etc) home, stock them up now. The goal is not so much to avoid infection completely, it’s to avoid infection during the peak weeks when the health service is going to be unable to provide care to everyone.
Realistically we are all getting exposed - you will maximise your chances by being ill when there’s health service capacity.

I find it kind of incredible just how fast you britbongs give up on your NHS. I mean I already mentioned how vigilant you gotta be around here when dealing with old family members with rare or hard to treat diseases because asshole doctos WILL try to abuse our fucking obscene triage laws to get vacations. But... Hell even then we get plenty of Britbong healthcare turists all year round even when the NHS is supposedly under little strain, and now a slightly worse flu's got y'all thinking its gonna inevitably collapse!

Is the NHS seriously this bad that it can't even afford to test symptoms, decide which cases need ICU and send the rest home with some paracetamol? Or is it that they're so poorly planned and civilian response has been so crap you're expecting to get flooded with idiots? Either way it makes me wonder just how far your once great empire has fallen than the same country that got through 2 world wars is now too strained by a god damned coronavirus. Your supply chain resisted the bombing of london, it shouldn't break this easily.

I mean. I guess one of the good things about franco was since the borders got closed he had to bring home a lot of medical manufacturing so we actually got that still running for the basics. So maybe if you seriously have NONE of that. But even then it's not that hard to set up and your idiots in charge got time.

Over here we're fearing since channel 5 and the who are being fucktards we might start seeing idiots panicking, but even then this is more of a fear by healthcare workers than anything tangible. (btw fuck the who... it's seriously been playing the media game trying to sow chaos and misinformation over here. Thankfully Fernando Simon keeps putting a stop to their rumors. We really need to make them pay for this shit... But even then so far all we have is suspicion idiots might go apeshit, we haven't even had one incident so far.) Your system is numerically and economically better than ours. If it is getting this badly then you've cocked the bureaucracy even worse than we have, by a lot. And boy have we cocked that up... I need to understand how tealand is seemingly in the public eye collapsing this hard this early.

Not sure how a recession caused by millions of dead after encouraging Corona Chan to run wild like Hulkamania is better than a recession caused by quarantines and shutdowns but I guess that's why I'm not an economist.

Well, it does seem to hit the elderly particularly hard. If Corona-chan kills all the boomers and what's left of the greatest generation all those entitlement obligations people have been forecasting to crash western economies will be wiped out, along with an early release of all that earned wealth at the top down to the younger generations.

Do I understand being stir-crazy? Totally. But that's what the internet and binge-watching is for. Seriously, dude. You and your wife are alive and aren't risking the lives of others. Watch some Netflix or some youtube. There's like 80 billion online forms of entertainment to choose from while you wait it out. Boomers don't know how to have fun.

Edit: Breaking Bad has 62 episodes, each an hour long. That's more than enough shit to keep you distracted while staying in for two weeks.
"Using the computer for entertainment. What are you, some kind of no-life screen addict?"-Boomers, probably.

Aside from boomers, from university I noticed that many people spend all their free time travelling, going to nightclubs, doing extracurriculars, and generally having a life. The only time they use the Internet is to post about the above on social media or access online course material. Imagine telling one of those people to sit still for two weeks, they'd make Karen look like a kindly old lady.

Also because of all the resume material and connections they accumulate from said extracurriculars, and the money supply required to travel that often people like them probably represent the upper-middle class.

It's merely Il Duce Cuomo bloviating and trying to act like he's doing something and of course, Orange Man Thingy Bad 4 U. He doesn't know what the fuck to do, someone else (hopefully with actual intelligence) is doing the thinking.

And the first part of the criteria is that you have to prove that you were in an area in which Corona is an issue and/or you were in contact with someone that was likely (or has proven to be) infected. I'm told it's not that easy to get testing approved.

Your answer is probably old. Cases are springing up (seemingly) spontaneously now. 25 year-old young adult who works at a gas station where airport shuttles gas up. Despite having a minor sniffle drives over to see his aunt, parents and grandparents for Sunday dinner and Bam! 5 more infections.

I just made that up but this seems to be the path this is taking now. Hopefully public health will get a clue.

The Jews are trying to shut it down and by it I mean all travel. Looks like Mossad might know some shit that we don't...

Aaahhh, ZA choos are at it again ....

UK's infected rate now 274, increase of 64.

Considering how "open" the UK is to international travel, it's kind of remarkable we're still so low.

These numbers will boom soon as the US has only had it for 1 week. by week 3 of March we will get the true number.

In the UK lockdowns are in talk but it wont work because cities will become plague quarters but the difficult factor is now we have an economy that will be destroyed by this practise.

Personally I think we are going to get a wave like the Spanish Flu and this is but a sample, I say this not as a doomsayer but the fact we know not really anything about this virus but its spreading very fast now and whilst it is the boomer killer, we have got to be so aware of it mutating.

It’s not a bad system amd we do have good disaster plans. It’s not a perfect system - there is no perfect health system. Some of the European ones do better, but it’s not bad. It’s plagued with too many managers, and structural issues that make too many people use the emergency (A&E.) but the problem is that the scale and speed of the epidemic is going to be such (if left unchecked) that We are going to see demand outstrip supply. We are going to know who needs ICU, but we don’t have enough beds. There are only so many places with mechanical ventilation capacity. Only so many beds. If the projections are right, and we see 50% of cases in a three week period , and 99% in twelve , no system in the world can cope. Hard choices will need to be made in every country that can’t flatten that peak. No matter how good their health service is.
Nowhere is going to be left unaffected. Quarantine still has a place, but it’s purpose now is to flatten that peak off. Countries like Sweden that are naively allowing doctors to waltz back into hospitals and kids to schools straight from a ski trip to Italy with no quarantine? They are fucked. Absolutely fucked. Iran? Fucked. Anywhere with few ICU beds? Fucked. Places like s Korea and Singapore who are actively tracing contacts and restricting movement will fare much better.
Countries vary hugely in their ICU capability. ECMO (basically taking your blood out, oxygenating it and putting it back in)? 15 places in the whole of the Uk. None in Scotland.
I went looking for a comparison of ICU beds by country and found this. Draw an arrow on the y axis top to bottom and that’s how fucked each country is.

death rates are going to depend on two things:
1. Ability of country to flatten infection peak
2. Number of intensive care places.
