Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

So the title is accurate. They had no concrete plan. Cope harder. Your fav is a re-tard.
The title would be accurate if it said 'Ben Carson Doesn't Know Of A Plan'.
It's not about coping with your derangement, it's about inaccurate information concerning a bio-emergency.

Frankly they would be stupid to announce a plan before it was in progress. The last thing you want is a bunch of mongs protesting shit and blocking roads.

Get an accurate news source.

Without doxxing myself or others too hard, I got a call from someone I know who works in a hospital about how they're doing testing on a patient who could potentially have corona. Can confirm the source is legit because I interact with this person on a daily basis IRL. It'd be the first case for that specific city in New York (That's all I'm saying), and that hospital where they're doing the testing is a literal pigsty so expect a lot of people to get infected. Both staff, patients and anyone else in the general area. They're fucked.
Expect to see some news about this in a couple of days if it turns out positive.

I had SARS, I also probably had West Nile (rescued a lot of downed birds to give to wildlife rehabbers without gloves) I'm fairly healthy and resistant but the flu has kicked my butt and given me pneumonia (I have a medical condition that makes me vulnerable to UTI) twice so I'm not optimistic about Corona-chan passing me over. I called urgent care and they said a bunch of panicked folks are waiting to be seen, better to come in tomorrow morning.

Everyone is now out of isopropyl alcohol, hand sanitizer, TP, water and of course masks of any kind. I'm glad I did my panic buying along with everyone else here weeks ago.

You had SARS? How did you get that? I thought that was a Chinese hospital worker thing....

the best thing you got in your arsenal is that 50k mate
when this correction hits, the bottom will either be a buyer's wet dream, or at the very least a chance for flight to something other than USD (or other soon-to-be rapidly deflating currencies)
also remember to wash your hands : o )
Got that right. Could be a once in a lifetime chance to make a fortune. If it I don't get it, that is.

Wasn't that the the really bad flu that wasn't a flu in the early 2000s? I was also working in Chinatown at the time. Maybe my doctor just decided to call it SARS because sick+notFlu+Chinese=SARS. I don't remember anything about that time except I was really sick for about two weeks and had to stay home. My doc isn't the best in the world, he refers me to a specialist for anything more complicated than a tetanus shot.

edit: when I went back to work a lot of older Chinese ladies came to see me, bringing me TCM God bless them. I miss Chinatown, it's a great place to work and eat, none of that chop suey Chinese take out garbage.

In case anyone is wondering about Italy, I found (late?) a visualization and a breakdown by region and severity:

I don't really know Italian, but guess the PDF goes as follows: the four yellow columns are active cases: recovered from symptoms, on intensive therapy, quarantined at home, and total. The next two columns are resolved cases: recovered and released for green, dead for red. Then you have the total, and I believe "tamponi" indicates the number of people tested. The differences in positive-to-tested ratios in the first three regions is somewhat striking.
366 mortality with 600 recoveries... that’s like 50% mortality rate in Italy in total. Is their health really that bad?

SARS had quite specific diagnostic criteria and only 27 people in the US were diagnosed with it. Your doctor might have been full of shit there, especially if he didn't refer you to the big public health agencies.

It's not a 50% mortality rate. The total number of confirmed infections is 7375. It's still over 10% though and that's still much higher than it should be in a country with a decent healthcare system.

Well now, thanks for the link. I've been considering changing doctors for awhile, I think I'll do it this month. He's been off his game for some time, especially after a heart attack.

Sounds like the one in Manhattan. I used to go to an old lady TCM healer on Mott St when I was younger and didn't have health insurance. She had some superb tea mixture for my kidney stones. I was legit impressed. But I can't stand the Chinatown in Brooklyn because of how rundown most it is and because of all the fucking mainlander hicks yelling and spitting everywhere.

So for the britbong people who were whinging earlier about how the govt hasn't been giving any info on where exactly the UK's cases were:

That'd be the media's fault. Simplifying maps into regions.

As the Government has given a county by county and unitary authority figure.

EDIT: Kind of puts things into context somewhat when you see so few counties in the double figures or even 0...

EDIT#2: The Devolved Governments have their own respective pages.

Wales has information on Coronavirus, but as they currently have like, 2 confirmed cases they're barely tracking figures but have been issued sweeping new powers under The Health Protection (Notification) (Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2020.

Italy has a birthrate problem. People in general are waiting to have kids and those who do, typically have 1.5 kids per couple, last time I checked. They have a long life expectancy, so you have a population that has high numbers, of two generations of elderly. So in terms of the entire population of people living in the hot-zones, there are more susceptible people per 100,000.

It isn't like Palestine, where you have some elderly, and women have their first kid at like 20, and go on to have 5 more. And by extension, many people in their 20's, 30's and 40's.

It is! I was working near the Criminal Courts building and I really loved the neighborhood. I know a few bits of Shanghai dialect and met a few people who took me to places with chefs from Shanghai. Everyone went out of their way to teach me Mandarin, they were really sweet. For all the bitching I do about mainland Chinese the people living and working in Chinatown are great. I really miss it.

eta: One thing about Manhattan's Chinatown is that the streets are clean and I didn't see much spitting or hacking. My go to market had a pet cat to keep mice and rats away. I don't know if that's changed in the past five years though.

I found this guy Market Ticker . He's not medical , just some stock market watcher with a website design from 1995.
He tries to put some numbers on the likely outcomes, like we all are in this thread.
I like his rule of thumb : If you can climb several flights of stairs without getting winded, or run a 10K, you'll be OK. HAES fatties will be wiped out.

One thing which I hope someone who knows what they're talking about can comment on:
Further, ICU and similar medical interventions will only change a few of these outcomes. The reason is somewhat complex, but it hinges on the fact that the body has to fight off the virus before it kills you. There is only so much medicine can do, irrespective of how invasive, when it comes to oxygen exchange. You can't run 100% O2 down someone's windpipe, forced or otherwise, for more than a few hours; after a day or so that actually causes temporary lung oxygen transport damage, which of course is going to make a situation like this worse. The maximum concentration that can be tolerated indefinitely is about 50%, which is roughly double that in the atmosphere, and in addition mechanical ventilation is not as efficient as natural to start with. What this means is that while an ICU can give you some margin back, it's not much.

So can anyone (Lets be honest , Otterly or the spanish Emu guy) say if this is true?

Also , with all due respect to Uncle Joe and Johnny, I am starting to get actually worried now. Much more so than yesterday when I was still fairly sanguine. I know the absolute numbers are still very low in real terms, but I understand exponential growth. Not sure everybody else does...
Normal life is still carrying on as normal round here, work, schools etc. I wonder when that will change?

I'm a fastidious wiper with a couple kids so I already had a closet full of TP. My wife laughed at me, laughed I say! Who's laughing now, Miss "Why do you hoard toilet paper?"
Lol! The TP thing. Yeah I got tons too, but we buy a couple of those costco size packs a year, usually at the same time when they're on sale... I'm just lucky the panic hit after I reupped for the year. Stuck in quarantine without buttwipe-the horror!
Guess it's time for the "do not take counsel of your fears" pump-up. Also adding DO NOT RUN SCARED.

As a group, believe most KFers stand very little chance of catching this virus in the first place, and the few who may catch the virus are likely to do just fine.

Am sure folks are using the info presented here for a measure of reassurance, and hope they are sharing the info to put the lid on hysteria.

We got this. Yes, we do.
I'm seeing the crazy-ass beliefs and misapprehensions about this virus running rampant outside this thread/site. I am very grateful for this cool, calm space to discuss this thing. Even our pet trolls here are head and shoulders above the average and even occasionally post stories of interest. I think kiwis are going to be alright, it's just the mass monkey-mind IRL I worry about. These fuckers be crazy.

as for leaders you can see how Iran's leadership is dying right as we speak; For the US the Virus is too early to have spread that much to infect them, s

I don't know, CPAC and AIPAC are doing their share to mess with the health of our leaders.

I've fixed highlights for this thread. Quick hack but it's up.

Thanks Null, I feel like this is one of the few places where people can say what they want and share information on this issue, with minimal censorship and thought policing etc. People are bringing all kinds of opinions and experiences forth and personally I am taking what I can. Useful and helpful. AND entertaining!

Thanks for your hard work.
