SNL being unfunny is just a symptom of today's culture. Comedy in general has been suffering for years now because nobody can take a joke without getting offended. The only acceptable targets to joke about are the safest ones (the closer to straight white male, the safer the target), and a joke at anyone else's expense is considered "punching down." Gross-out or shock humor is about the only safe method since it takes refuge in absurdity, but it's a cheap way to get laughs that wears off quickly for many.

Pair that with "comedians" thinking that anyone actually cares about their political opinions and deciding to lecture the rest of us plebs on how we should think, and you get modern SNL/late-night talk shows/most of comedy in general. Eight years of ragging on Bush followed by eight years of dicksucking Obama made them believe that they were on the right side of history, and when the people voted the other way, their minds couldn't take it. They've ramped up their screeching about everything to increasing heights and have forgotten how to make anything funny.

I can quote the "many such cases, sad!" line from a random Trump tweet from years ago and still crack up every time. I can't remember the last time I watched a modern comedy movie and actually enjoyed it. When the President can fire off a tweet that's funnier than anything your entire industry has churned out in years, you have a major problem.

It got worse the less they controlled, most people in Hollywood know they affect culture it's the basis of PBS and children's programming. They saw around 2010 that the culture wasn't changing as fast as they wanted. As soon as Trump became the nominee you had them create media that was effectively them standing on their soapbox and telling the lesser people what they should do. You could see them realize their old tricks weren't working as well and instead of figuring out it was because people didn't want to do what they were told they assumed it was because the message wasn't blatant enough.

I wonder if it's a delayed reaction to the Obama years, they've collectively assumed at the time that they were in the home stretch, and much like a runner in the same position they broke into a sprint.. only to realize that the track ahead had turned into mud.
