Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Multiple Ohio universities are cancelling in person classes. Sadly, public schools aren't. Even poor towns in Appalachian Ohio have VLA(virtual learning academy) as an option. It's perfectly viable to do almost all classes online.

Decided to see if the Southern Ohio Music Festival is still going to happen. Yep. It's a bluegrass festival. Take a guess what the average age of people there will be. Now take a guess how many might smoke, chew tobacco, have lung problems(coal mining is/was a common occupation in Southern Ohio), or age related diseases.

This should be canceled for the time being. Look, bluegrass is cool, but it isn't worth spreading a virus over. Play them banjos and fiddles at home.

NPR last night said it was a doctor at the Children's hospital of Philadelphia's specialty care and surgery center in King of Prussia. They're closing schools in Cheltenham and other school districts because the doctor came in contact with 11 kids. Who knows if any of them went to the mall though.
Remember, in addition to being a mall, King of Prussia is also an upper middle class, bordering on ritzy, suburb of Philly. When the disease popped up in the Philly burbs last week it was practically there already since those people all travel between towns. KoP also doesn't get the international destination status that MoA and West Edmonton get, so its not as big a deal.

And further more, its all been trash anyway ever since the FAO Schwartz closed.....

This one, combined with Null's video contains just the sweetest irony so far:

Turkey's health minister: confirmed cases in Turkey (6 hrs ago).
Have some terrible google trans. frens.
Health Minister Fahrettin Koca reiterated that cases of the virus have been detected in Turkey, but also found in the chorus warning. Koca "This epidemic is likely to be very high in Turkey," he said.
Tldr: Pieced together by google trans. comments. Sadly no automatic caption for turkish:
  • Are we not immune? May allah protect us.
  • Close the borders, out with those foreigners, throw those syrian Refugee's out they are disease carriers
  • ... more of the same
"The test of a citizen was positive. The patient is a man and his condition is good. Everyone from his family is suspicious and under control. This is the first case in our country. The patient's virus is known to have been infected through European ?travelers?. He is completely isolated from the outside world,"

I'm wondering, if a governor declares a state of emergency, do they get any special powers?

Don't read too much into the US State Governors declaring "States of Emergency" over Coronavirus. There are a couple of reasons. None particularly disturbing.

1. (and at this point the big one) By declaring a SOE it empowers the State and Counties to take steps against certain types of price gouging on critical supplies. Such as Food, Gas and Toilet Paper.

2. It frees up State and Federal Emergency Funds and allows them to bypass normal bureaucratic purchasing procedures for needed supplies. Everyone is screaming about "Well how could they only have an X% stockpile of Masks?" It's because during normal periods they aren't allowed to stockpile tons of crap and waste tons of money on hypothetical's.

3. It allows the State and Counties to take and enforce Quaratine Actions on individuals. Without a SOE declaration most State and Local Health Departments are somewhat limited in their ability to Medically Quarantine an individual. They can only mandate and enforce it for a very very small number of clearly specified diseases. Things like Typhoid Fever. (and mostly worries from the 19th and early 20th Century) I'm not even sure if they can enforce a Quarantine on Meningitis without some higher level review. In a SOE they can order a Medical Quarantine and have it enforced by authorities without the need for a Legislative or Judicial Action. Remember Chris Christie ran afoul of Federal Courts for ordering an idiot nurse Quarantined upon return from treating Ebola Patients. This avoids that stupidity.

As we move forward to the next stage...

Sorry, I missed the last couple of pages. I'll catch up later.

This was my day if you care:

Spent the day not feeling very well, waiting for an order from the local supermarket only to find out later I had not set it up to order to my home, but to collect from the supermarket. Doh!

I hate anything to do with buying on the internet. It always fucks up somehow. This time was my fuck-up. So I had to go back and spend another hour or so filling out the order again (there was no option to just use my last order and change delivery options). I'm a burned out programmer so these things annoy me as much for their techno-incompetence as they irritate me for my dim-witted fuckwittery.

I ended up spending 20 bucks more though. This is after spending about an hour on the phone to some street-shitter who had attitude. Shoulda taken ten minutes and just said: we'll just change the delivery to home delivery, when would sir like it? But no. Technology. Gotta love it.

Anyway, point being, what was available yesterday is gone today. Water, Oats, Pasta, Rice.

With regard to supermarket shopping in the UK:

Day by day these resources go down. I just spent nearly 200 bucks (about 160 GBP) on a shop from the local supermarkets because not any individual one had everything. I had to go to three. Pain. Hence the frustration. I've spent nearly a whole fucking day at work (8 man hours minus lunch) to get this shit together. Wonder how the oldies but goldies feel...

They are talking about bringing in the army to get supplies to people. About changing the allowed hours of delivery, i.e, middle of night is ok now, FU if you live next door. All good.

If you get a supply now from a supermarket make sure you get two, because after having to fill out two different (but almost the same) orders on consecutive days, I found out that they didn't have that big bag of rice, or big bottle of water. Even if they had got the order through I would have found out last minute it was 'not available'. They don't always tell you. So don't rely on one source!

Each day brings dwindling supplies. Prices going up. Everyone else is panic buying so why shouldn't you?

Funny thing is I needed to do a big shop around this time anyway. I just did one a few weeks ago as well as I've been following this whole pandemic thing since January as well. I got a few nice big bags of rice and pasta and tinned tomatoes etc. etc. nicely stocked up.

I'm quite active on some other forums and I've been doing my own calculations. As a layman of course. Pretty much everything has panned out as expected, but I'm quite sure most of you will agree the last couple of days have been a turning point, that maybe even 'we' didn't see coming down the pipe.

So here we are, as we move forward to the next stage.

Spoke to my folks earlier on the phone, both of whom would die if they caught this thing. I'm also auto-immune messed up, so it's not good for me either. My motto for now is: JUST AVOID THIS FUCKER LIKE THE PLAGUE!

I don't have much more to say but I'll give you a few pointers to buying stuff while you still can. In the next week or two the UK gets locked down and there won't be anything left on the shelves. As my little forays in to bulk-buying have proven over the last day or two, this is a very quickly evolving situation with panic setting in at an exponential rate. It might not make sense to buy 5-6KG of Rice and 5-6KG of Pasta to you right now, but in a few weeks when supplies run down and demand goes up along with the price, you may be glad you stocked your larder while you could.

This isn't how it should be. It's not how you or I would like it to be. It's not on the side of logic even. But it is what it is bro'. Just sayin'...

Here is an approach you can take if you haven't started out of your trap yet:

First off you need staples like Rice and Pasta. Dried, of course. Get as big a bag as you can afford and can store in a cool dry place. Couscous is also another protein rich staple that is cheap. You can buy Kilos of it for a buck a time. Make sure you have a few.

Then you need a little something to go with that. Tinned tomatoes are good. I've been noticing some supermarkets were already sold out of them a few days ago. But check again, supplies are coming back in.

You need basic salt and also some herbs if you can stretch for seasoning. Things like Turmeric are anti-inflammatory as well so make sure you have shit like that.

Tinned goods are also handy to have in the form of fruit. Remember you won't be able to go out to get any. So get what you find palatable and stock up.

You will need protein. Nothing better than tinned fish. Even if you are a meat eater, you can still get by on fish. I use these terms as I'm not a 'meat' eater, but I do eat fish. Pesca-vegetarian. Handy in times like this. But fish is meat though of course. It's hard to get canned meat, but if you can, stock up. Good luck to you good ol' boys with a ham and a shank in your chest freezer.

Better to have small fish for everyday eating. Tuna contains Mercury as an apex predator. Smaller fish like Mackerel and Sardine and Anchovies are ideal. Cheap, nutritious, tasty, clean. Don't care what you say, you can pack more protein meatwise in to a tin than you can beef or lamb. You get me.

So we got our staples of Rice and Pasta. Our protein in the form of tinned fish (or meatballs, just a like a Mama used a to a make-a).

Now would be a good time to consider frozen vegetables. Frozen veg is shit, let's face it, but some is better than others. The best for me is frozen spinach and frozen sweetcorn, and of course the king of frozen veg: Peas!

You can store frozen carrots and others but they don't pack the punch. Peas, Sweetcorn and Spinach pretty much hold all of their nutritional value if you get the right stuff. Most of it is good enough so grab what you can and stock up.

So that is main dinner sorted. What about a tasty snack or a bit of energy pick me up after a hard day's playing 'what new porn do we have on the internet today'? Granola! Fibre, cheap, filling, fairly nutritious. Just make sure you have a few tins of dried/powdered milk, evaporated/condensed milk to go with it. You can even get by with just water, but a bit of milk 'something' really helps it go down. Jesus. I just realised the tard cum filter must be going mad!

Add some dried fruit in the form of Sultanas and Prunes to that mix. Nuts as well if you can afford it. Rinse the dried fruit as it usually has been cured with sulphates or wtf (drenching with water gets rid of a lot of it).

Along with the tins of tomatoes you should get some tubes of tomato paste - goes a lot further. And if you are a brit bong or a boomeranger then get some marmite/vegemite as well mate.

Don't forget protein rich sources such as beans and lentils. They are a staple and more. I'd rather be stuck with just a bag of lentils than just a bag of rice. Mix them together. Add in some frozen sweetcorn. Sweet mate.

I noticed that others have the same idea and that beans have been selling out very quick as well. Just FYI.

That's about it really. Just don't forget the water, which you very probably won't need, but if you ever do...

It'll be worth 10 times its weight in food.

As for the whole TP mania, well you can still get some from some supermarkets in the UK. You just can't buy it at all from others. But I met an old mate tonight. Someone I haven't seen for about 4 years. And then when I met him it was the first time. He was off his head on E or something and insisted on kissin' me (no homo). Well, we said 'hello' again and for want of a better conversation things turned to wiping our bums! He told me, and I will confirm, that the pro-tip at the moment if you are in the UK is to go on to groupon where they are doing a very good deal on TP. No shill, no spam. It's handy if you are somewhere where you just made an order but can't get the comfy bum. You can just buy that by itself. It's about 15 quid. 40-50 rolls.

Yeah, I know it's silly. People are silly. Always were. But they get sillier the more panicked they become.

The herd hasn't become completely spooked yet, but they will soon, especially when they will have that entity they have never taken seriously before (the govt.) telling them they can't go out of their house for a few weeks and no it's not a joke, and if you think it is there will be some nasty blokes there with bang-sticks to let you know otherwise!

This is unprecedented.

You Kiwis were among the few that saw which way the wind was blowing.

And you were right.

The wind continues to blow.

More weathervanes the better.

King County, Washington reports 74 new cases of coronavirus and 2 new deaths, raising state's total to 236 cases and 25 dead
In other words, a long ways to go before we hit the "time to shit our pants" number of 100,000 deaths

Yes, yes, economy more important that people's lives, very good.

Intriguing, see a few stories from Reddit along those lines. I can definitely understand how someone could spend half a day completely out of it, feel better naturally, and attribute that to the LSD.

And of course there are people touting cannabis as a cure for the flu (and presumably this coronavirus too). Thanks potheads!

How come you never update us with how it is going in Iran?

Dutch town randomly tests 300 medical workers who didn't travel and weren't exposed to Corona patients. 10% test positive.

Some type of sentinel testing is desperately needed. This isn't exactly the same but it helps us to understand what the level of infection might be and whether our current infection control guidelines are adequate.

Travis AFB update

Hospital staff are now being given direct orders that they're not allowed to wear masks unless directly interacting with patients for the sole purpose of image. FML. They're ignoring the asymptomatic spread and crazy incubation period as well as the fact that obviously staff are capable of being carriers. Let's not forget the 1,000 infected and contaminate Grand Disease cruise ship passengers dumped on base. I have permanently damaged lungs and I'm pretty much fucked at this point due to rapid community spread and having family as hospital staff.

EDIT: The David Grant base hospital is currently hosting 12 confirmed coronavirus patients.
EDIT2: The irony of all of this is that I ended up at this base because I have such shit health and they wanted my family stationed where the "best" base hospital is.

Can you quarantine in your own room? Get yourself a stack of paper plates, a microfridge, toaster, water and a microwave? And get an n-95 respirator for when you have to use the toilet?

We are almost to 1000 cases in the US.

Don't be suprised if we see the numbers really pop off in the next week or so. It has obviously been spreading for weeks and testing has lagged behind.

I'm personally rather worried about the New York lockdown. Full blown quarantines just won't work in the states. Too many stupid and selfish people. Plus way too hard to manage large stretches of areas effectively due to sprawl and crawl. Also, be very careful about people using any hysteria for political gain and/or as a way to erode civil rights.

Shit is about to get real in the next two weeks with the current rates.

Our politicians have acknowledged that full blown quarantine may be necessary here at some point (although they don't use that term - "social distancing" is the current buzz phrase), but good luck trying to implement it in our large cities.

The only way you could really do it in cities like Sydney is to cripple people's capacity to travel - so shutting down all public and commercial transport but also shutting down fuel sales so that people could only get as far as one tank of fuel would take them (which is still a fair distance with many cars).

Lol, the entire new england area is pretty much acting like everything is normal. Went for a check-up recently and was told most of what the media is claiming is overblown and mostly BS. Swine flu fatalities hit over 200,000 back in 2009 and people didn't make nearly as much of a shitshow. If you're over 50 and already have any comorbid conditions, then yeah, it can be deadly, but so can regular influenza.

The CHOP Specialty Care & Surgery Center is probably closer to the King of Prussia Mall than the Wuhan bio weapons lab was to the Wuhan market.

KoP also doesn't get the international destination status that MoA and West Edmonton get
Unfortunately you are 100% wrong with your assessment. King of Prussia Mall is in the echelon of shopping centers that are known as "destinations"; that is to say people come to the country specifically to shop there.
