Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

This all reminds me about how when I was in like Kindergarten, my elementary school didn't provide hand soap in the bathrooms because they didn't want to deal with the liabilities of a kid slipping on soap on the floor. They started providing soap after they got hounded on for allowing the spread of disease.

that's just gold, comedy gold.

No. You are right about panic buying. But LA happens to be one of the epicenter of supplies from the Pacific. If you drive between the Port of LA in Long Beach, and DTLA you hit multiple warehouses full of just about everything, then distribution fans outwards.

I haven't seen a lot of ass-wipe hoarding around here.

If there is something that could start a riot, it might be people being shut in with their dysfunctional relatives. 🤣

Actually I would be afraid of riots beginning in oversaturated medical facilities. Imagine how you would feel, after a 6 hour wait in the ER with your sick spouse, when you are turned away because they have no more room or resources to treat him. And there are like 10 people ahead of you waiting and another 10 behind ...

That's not where most of your food comes from, they aren't going to be panic buying fans and electronics.

So, is it time to panic?

It's never time to panic in my opinion. Yes, shit's rough and it will likely get rougher. But panic doesn't do anything good for anybody. Calm and clear heads will prevail. Panic, anxiety and worry just cloud your judgment and perspective, two things which are very important in this kind of situation. The people panicking are the ones who are going to cause the most problems, they may even cause more issues than the virus itself. These are the people you'll be seeing in the coming days in various shitty phone-recorded videos, fighting, screaming at each-other and in-general, running about chattering like a bunch of monkeys.

What's going to happen is going to happen, all we can hope to do is maintain the three C's [Cool, Calm, Collected] and mitigate the damage as much as we possibly can. Wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, isolate yourself if possible and if not, maintain distance from other people. Buy some extras on your next shopping trip in case you have to self-quarantine at your house. Avoid being in contact with elderly or immuno-compromised people since this thing is asymptomatic for a while, but give your older relatives a call and see how they're getting along. Keep a blunt object, knife or better yet a gun handy incase Mad Max esque raider gangs begin forming. Well that last part was a joke. Mostly. Get away from the inner cities and urban areas if you can. Don't be afraid to question things. This sudden burst of cancellations, postponements, bans and closings seems to indicate that somebody somewhere knows something that we don't yet.

But don't panic. Panic will get you killed far faster than any virus or natural disaster. How you respond and react to dire circumstances and cataclysmic scenarios will determine whether or not you and the folks around you make it through unhurt and healthy. Likewise, try to limit the stress. Do something you enjoy or start a new hobby. Always wanted to learn to play the guitar, play chess or read that one book? You might as well if you've gotta be cooped up. Plus stress will make your immune system less effective. Get plenty of sleep too.

We've weathered far worse than this. Especially people in Europe, considering not too terribly long ago there was a war going on in much of their backyards. It'll get tough but if we can stay calm and cooperate, we'll be much better off and more likely to pull through unscathed or mostly unscathed.

So if the rumor of NYC being completely locked down tonight is true, I'm going to go ahead and update the status.
How? Are we talking the 5 Boroughs or just Manhattan Island? And would they still let people on Wall St go to work?

Was just looking at the Brianna Wu thread, and it kinda made me wonder something. So far the death rate has been substantially higher in males. Trannies take a lot of hormones, and the gender death rate disparity seems to indicate that hormones do play a role in the severity of the symptoms. Kinda makes me wonder how this is going to impact trannies.

Am I the only one hoping for doomsday with this thing? It will happen because people with act exceptional by killing others more than the virus itself.

No, I'd rather not have that happen to society at a time like this. What the hell, man. This isn't some fictional movie. You've seen one too many horror films, my friend.

Take with a huge grain of salt.

It's mainly from someone claiming to be a family member of one of the governors staff.

As said above, if real it would be an amazing shitshow.

I noticed that the OP got modded "For purposes of avoiding plagiarism penalties, this thread is OP has been removed."
If there has been a notice to not post articles verbatim, I'll see it eventually.

⛰⛏ BAD GEOLOGY JOKE FOR THE DAY ⛰⛏
Q: What happens when you look up geology jokes?
A: You know you've hit rock bottom!

I went out and bought some last minute things yesterday at the local supermarket when someone posted Trump was addressing the nation. There were a few people who loaded up their carts but no real panic shopping. I knew there would be a panic afterward and whoever warned about that here was 100% on the money.

I wouldn't be surprised if the subway shit down over the weekend for "disinfection", even if its temporary. Confirmed cases are rising in NYC.

Everyone locate distribution centers for Walmart, Target, etc. Just in case.
How? Are we talking the 5 Boroughs or just Manhattan Island? And would they still let people on Wall St go to work?
Probably all boroughs. Isn't Wall Street shut down already? Floor trading really isn't necessary. I don't know about other firms but I assuming it's all remote at this point.

IMO it depends on whether or not society shifts the blame onto them (and some religious folks are already doing that, which isn’t surprising).

HRT, however, would have little to no impact on the virus’ virility. I would hate to see a roided out tranny running the streets with a shotgun in tow, so I’m keeping optimistic on this.

What's a geologist's pickup line on Tinder?

Girl, I don't wanna put you through any schist but it looks like I'm Cummingtonite.

Anyway there's your brief bit of levity before you die of interstitial pneumonia.

panic is bad. having a plan for if shit goes bad is good. if you're stocking up at the store when the panic'ers hit, congrats you're exposing yourself to crowds and that's a bad idea.

the best you can do right now is have enough food to survive 1-2 month quarantine. have medicine and protective equipment in case you need to care for a sick family member. if you live in a city consider staying with relatives or friends in a more rural area for a month or two if possible. clean all hard surfaces you're exposed to -- door handles, toilet switches, cell phones, keyboards etc. take it with a grain of salt but my epidemiologist friend seems to think hard surfaces are the #1 risk and airborne is behind it. i was advised to wear a mask in public and/or chew on zinc tablets. even the wrong kind of mask, a bandana, any physical barrier helps to an extent. if you are affected by the mask/filter global shortage, zinc tablets should also limit the chance of oral/sinus uptake of the virus. it can't hurt to clean your sinuses with a neti pot, and it's generally a good thing to do anyways. a week ago everyone was looking at me weird for wearing masks in public, now everyone in my city is either wearing one or wish they bought some before the global shortage hit. with everything going down in italy and all the talk of deploying the national guard to nyc/seattle i would recommend buying a gun if you live in an urban area.

some of it may sound a bit rediculous, but looking at what's happening around the world, there's a very real chance the same may come to your city if you live in a populated urban area.

be cool, calm collected. don't panic. but be prepared for when everyone else panics. it might not happen but there's a very real chance it could, and you don't want to be caught with your pants down once the brainlets and normies enter panic mode.

worst case if its a nothingburger, congrats you have food for a camping trip and you can just sell the gun for probably about the same you paid for it.

here's a list of household cleaning products known to kill coronavirus for when the panic'ers buy all the bleach and isopropanol in your city: https://www.nea.gov.sg/our-services...tive-ingredients-for-disinfection-of-covid-19

Something that just occurred to me. If you are going to buy a gun in the US, you might want to do it ASAP. If the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) system goes down due to staffing issues, you are not going to be able to purchase a firearm from a dealer.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong , but that how things work these days, right?

Unless something new comes up, Poland ends its day with 51 active cases - a spike of 20 in a single day - but there's been almost no updates on the count during the day, so surely more are coming. Still only six of them remain in serious condition. No meaningful increase in number of tested samples this time. If we're going to see the kind of explosive spread some other countries have, then it's probably good timing we're gradually shutting everything down and hiding in caves.

Is there panic? Apparently the denser and higher the population, the dumber and more panicked people are. Largest cities are rife with stories of panic shopping, talking heads talk nonsense, politicians are themselves. The Senate opposition actually attempted a power grab but couldn't get a quorum going. Morons. Smaller cities and rural areas seem to be calmer, there are lines in shops but no chaos, still haven't seen a single person wearing masks (but cashiers in shops wear rubber gloves now). Even apothecaries aren't particularly besieged. Shelves are stocked. But then my city (or the entire region, for that matter) still hasn't seen a single case. Geography works in our favor: it's a city nobody cares about, far from every border. I'm hearing ambulances much more often than usual though.

Still not sure what to think about the virus itself, too many contradictory stories, data doesn't seem to add up. Not feeling particularly anxious myself, just hoping my parents don't catch it, but back in the godforsaken nowhere of rural central Poland they will hopefully be fine. I do suspect that the reason organizations are so willing to close down is not some secret knowledge about Corona-chan's pernicious characteristics, but rather the willingness to avoid a healthcare collapse scenario like in Italy. They cut some profits now (maybe not much because people currently are less willing to go out in the first place), but get to keep a greater number of their customers alive in the long term and don't get a bad reputation. Or maybe it's just mass psychology.

Either way it's eerily interesting to watch the world withdraw into hibernation.

The higher rates in males probably have 2 causes. One, males have substantially more lung capacity. Simply bigger lungs with more surface area. Thus more available and exposed receptors for the virus to attack.

Second is we are still looking at data heavily skewed by China. Chinese men smoke like chimneys.
