From how I've had it explained to me, it's a sort of escape from responsibility. A fantasy of all kinds of depraved sexual shit happening to you and it not being your fault.

I think a lot of fetishes have a sort of reverse Freud thing going on, in that they're sexual extensions of other issues going on in the person's life. That's why I can understand things like rape, BDSM, humiliation, DDLG, ageplay, even scat, as gross as it is. They're all about things like people with no control of their lives wanting to feel in control, people who feel overwhelmed by their responsibilities wanting someone else to take control of them, and various issues with guilt, shame, and self loathing.
