UNITED NATIONS (REUTERS) - A female diplomat from the Philippine mission to the United Nations tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday (March 12), according to a note sent to UN missions, making the woman the first known case at the world body's New York headquarters.
"As of today, the Philippine Mission is in lockdown, and all personnel are instructed to self-quarantine and to seek medical attention should they develop the symptoms. We are assuming that all of us have been infected," wrote Philippines acting UN Ambassador Kira Azucena in a message seen by Reuters.
According the online UN directory of diplomatic staff, there are about 12 diplomats at the Filipino mission, which is on 5th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.

The sick diplomat represented the Philippines in the UN General Assembly's legal affairs committees. Ms Azucena said the diplomat was last at UN headquarters on Monday for about half an hour when she was asymptomatic.
She came down with flu-like symptoms on Tuesday and visited her doctor.
"She got the call today that she tested positive for Covid-19," Ms Azucena wrote on Thursday.

The UN did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the case.

The 193-member world body began implementing coronavirus prevention measures at its Manhattan headquarters this week.
A two-week conference on women's rights was cut to one day, several other planned large conferences cancelled, and most smaller meetings cut. UN missions have been asked to limit the number of diplomats they send to meetings, and at least half the several thousand UN staff who normally work in the building will be working from home by next week.

MANILA (REUTERS) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday announced a halt on domestic land, sea and air travel to and from Manila, as well as community quarantine measures, in what he called a "lockdown" of the capital to arrest the spread of coronavirus.

Duterte approved a resolution to allow a raft of containment measures including bans on mass gatherings, a month of school closures and quarantining in communities where cases are detected, as well as stopping domestic travel in and out of Manila.
It follows confirmation on Saturday of the Philippines' first domestic transmission of the virus, which has killed two people there and infected 53.

Ran to the grocery store tonight to gather up some food before shit gets ugly this weekend. Luckily, I didn't need much because my freezer has been stocked with meat, vegetables, and bread all winter long anyway.

Some shit went down in my state today with the announcement of schools closing for two weeks starting on Monday, and even universities. I expected a lot of panic shoppers tonight. Yes, the grocery store was indeed a little crowded. There's no more toilet paper, paper towels, disinfectants, hand soaps, and hand sanitizers. However, aside from (m)ilk, white bread, ramen, and ground beef, the food selection was completely do-able and fine. I expect things to be at their worst over the weekend, so I'm relieved I won't have to worry about that.

Pro-tip for everyday life: I'm not saying that everyone should become a doomsday prepper. However, always make sure you don't leave your pantry or freezer empty. Be on top of your grocery errands every week.

Bwahahaha now a bunch of people who never posted in this thread are coming to complain about the problems the virus is causing. Next time pay attention to what is going on around you and be prepared for shit when things go tits up. 3 months of warning signs ignored and now crying begins.

100% of the problems going on aren't caused by the virus itself but by the overblown, insane reaction to it.

So I'm examining my normal workday and lifestyle to determine what changes need to be made or what impact a widespread quarantine will have on it...

None! I mostly work from home. Work remotely or teleconference. Most weeks my only human contact is the nice lady behind the counter at the local Pizza joint should I leave my cave for lunch. In theory I should have less exposure vectors than a Himalayan Hermit. So long as I never let my wife back in the house. "Sorry Hun! It's a National Emergency. We all must make sacrifices."

hahahaha

We haven't hit the overblown, insane reactions to this yet.

Give it another week or two, when someone famous or one of the party elites in the West gets put in the ICU over it. Not "in voluntary quarantine" or whatever fancy words they're using for it. "Secluding at home."

Or when pictures of some American in the ICU with this shit are leaked. They're working REAL FUCKING HARD at keeping any of that shit from getting out, but it will happen, and soonish.

Or when the first famous person dies from this.

THAT is when you will see the overblown, insane reactions.

It's going to get WORSE. WAY WORSE.

That is everybody.

No, it demonstrably isn't everyone. Not in China, not anywhere. It will kill people with impaired lungs already and those with underlying medical conditions - the people we refer to as 'vulnerable'. Most other people who are generally healthy, not already at the end of life and not in vulnerable groups who contract it will recover without medical treatment. That should be clear by now.

The point of all this lockdown business, flight restrictions and large vent cancellations is that those who contract it who can throw it off will inevitably pass it on to others, including those who cannot, and who will require intensive care beds for weeks to have even a small chance at recovery.

OK, it's Crazy Uncle Johnny Time...

I'm not going to teach you to make a field expedient mask or how to seal your vehicle or how to do any of the crazy shit I learned over the decades. I'm here to tell you some stuff.

First of all, it's the second week of the month. That's when foodstamps will start running out, payday will start running out, all that good shit. By now the panicking dipshits will have ran out their bank account, maxed out their credit cards, and are feeling safe and confident. Goods and materials are still moving, slowly maybe, a trickle in some stuff, but still moving.

IF you haven't been able to buy stuff AND are worried about the Wu-Flu getting you, because, let's be honest, no matter what the CDC is saying, that shit is likely asymptomaic or low symptom everywhere by now, you need to step back a second.

Number One: Breathe. Panic is the biggest killer. It's all right to be afraid. You are supposed to be afraid sometimes, it keeps you alive. But breathe.

Number Two: Stop. Just stop. Hold still to the count of ten. Breathe through your nose with your mouth closed and your tongue pressed against the roof of your mouth. Slow and steady. Five breaths total while you're counting. In and out, Kiwi, in and out.

Number Three: If you haven't already, take stock. You don't have to use Crazy Uncle Johnny math. HONESTLY look at how much you and your family use. Total, for a month. You should ALWAYS have this. Don't tell me "I'll never need it" because right now you should borrow Skynet's time machine, go back two months, and slap yourself in the mouth. But take stock. WRITE IT DOWN. Brands, product.

Number Four: Call your local 24 hour store, ask which day the trucks roll in and they restock.

Number Five: Go to Wal-Mart or other 24 hour centers at THREE AM. That's after stocking. On the day they restock. Be polite. Be nice. Brush your fucking teeth and wash your hair. Stay ARMS DISTANCE from other people.

Number Six: If you're worried about person to object to person transmission, wear mask and gloves, headgear, raincoat, wipe that shit down.

There you go.

See, the next resupply, foodstamps are going to be out, cards are gonna be maxed, liquid cash reserves will be down. The stores will probably overstock the next two weeks. You go in, at night, keep your distance, and buy then. Karen isn't going to be sweeping through Wal-Mart with her gang at 3AM, Cletus won't be panic buying to put everything in a shack, and Jamal won't be buying up to lord it over everyone else.

Remember: This is all shit you're going to use/consume anyway. It isn't wasted money.

See, Corona-chan has "CIVIL UNREST" and "GOVERNMENT PARALYZATION" tattooed on her big sweaty ass cheeks, and Crazy Uncle Johnny is pretty sure she's gonna start planting that ass right on people's faces soon.

Anyway...

Joke: Why did Helen Keller's dog run away? You would too if your name was Urrggaughagagag

100% of the problems going on aren't caused by the virus itself but by the overblown, insane reaction to it.

I think why virologists and epidemiologists are concerned about the virus is the more people it infects the greater the chance for mutations to occur, they are also concerned that this particular virus could become endemic like influenza so strict measures are happening so that it lowers the chances of a worse potential second and third wave. The spanish flu wasn't so bad in 1917 it was also a zoonotic virus like this one that jumped from animal to human causing fever and respiratory disease but a mutation in the second wave of it in 1918 was quite lethal causing cytokine storms in young healthy adults killing them quickly.

So my state's governor, Chief Big Eyebrows, issued some bullshit statement on Twitter and it seems the citizens are getting ornery. We should be. Our leadership is handling this possibly worse than any other state and it's not only embarrassing, it shows a gross disregard for public health. I'll add archive once it's done, whenever that is.

it's afternoon in Wuhan right now and there's more people on the streets than i have ever seen on the wuhan live cams since this ordeal began, i've seen 9 people so far! (this city's like 3x the size of nyc)

Another drop dead case, this time in Rome, Italy.

Thanks for the info, and please keep posting. Right now there is absolutely nothing coming out of China.

edit: actually you know what? i've changed my mind, i'll agree with you if the person you're telling it to is an ameriburger. it's not like they'll test them anyways.

At this point testing in the US is just a safety blanket. Gives a feeling of control that isn't there. In exchange for risk of infection.

This could be bullshit, but here it is anyway.
If anyone thinks this isn’t serious, my family member who is a nurse had a conference call on preparations today with an Italian doctor they sometimes work with. He said they are now taking 40 year olds off the ventilators in favour of 30 year olds
