Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

The US government is allowed to detain you if it is legally permitted and the law is constitutional. We usually associate detainment with criminal activity. But detaining for criminal activity falls under the same category as compelling public interest. Just as society has a compelling interest to not see criminals roam free, the same goes for the diseased and US law allows for forcible detainment to enforce a quarantine. The US government supremacy power and control over interstate commerce also does in theory give it the power to close State borders if such closure serves a compelling national interest.

What the Federal government cannot do is enforce quarantines within the states themselves. In these situations the States have even broader authority and can even institute draconian measures that even the Federal Government is not permitted.

County health authorities have the power to detain you.

Hell, I can do it.

The fact that no journalists are writing about the ethnicity of the Corona-virus deaths suggests there is a racial issue.
My guess is that Asians are the ones dying of the Wuhan Flu and that this fact is being covered up for some reason.

It's an interesting idea, but I can't really think of what would cause the virus to "racially profile", as it were. Then again, I'm not exactly an expert in genetics and I won't pretend to be.

what is it with americans and buying water bottles during any disaster? just use your taps to fill up some bottles at home for fuck sake, there's no reason to actually buy your water at the store just use a soda bottle or beer bottle or anything like that and fill it with water. you're telling me you guys have 0 bottles at home that you could fill or do you guys just have really shitty water over there?
Much of our media comes from Hollywood, which thinks emergency preparedness is earthquake preparedness, Water lines fail during quakes, so we have to keep water as a necessity.

look at italy, look at that statistic and you tell me that isn't terrifying. almost 50% kill rate, almost as many in serious condition as have recovered.
Among an aged population (The average age over there is 45.4 years), which is always hit harder than any other ages when it comes to infections. That is the course of just about any virus out there. About a quarter of their adult population smokes, and who knows about asthma, or other conditions. That is also not a 50% kill rate unless 6k of those 12k diagnosed die.

So, no, I'm not "terrified", because I don't inhale cigarettes and I'm not over 70.

No one has said its doomsday. But it is exceptionally bad. The deaths, the economic loss is catastrophic and will be lasting. What society looks like and feels like now is changing and will be quite different in the upcoming weeks and months.

This is no fleeting pandemic. The list of effects on society is too long to list but will be visible enough shortly. The countries that will fair worst are the ones that have the most to lose - the richer countries.
Plenty are acting like it. The hysteria proves that. You also are acting kind of doomsday. I'll check back in a couple weeks and see how things fair then.

But can they block off areas like Pine Street (in Long Beach where there are a lot of bars and well-paid professional singles) and Hollywood? And like streets full of bars in college towns?

Can they force the business owners to shutter the place for a couple of weeks? Or lock down the local gym?

I remember being a younger person who would have gone stir crazy if I weren't able to see my friends or go to work.

I mean realistically speaking, what can civil authorities do, to prevent crowds from gathering in bars and gyms?

Some of us have tap water that's technically safe to drink but which tastes like rhino piss. Municipal water systems in the US vary greatly in quality. At least in our area tap water is somewhat potable - in Flint, Michigan, it was so bad it spawned an outbreak of Legionnaire's Disease. Getting gallon sized water is, for me, less trouble than trying to filter it all. And if the stores ever do run out, I can fill the empties with tap water.

Think of it like this: you are hit by another car. Neither are insured. Your wife loses her legs, you have brain damage. Both passengers of both cars are financially ruined. On stats it is listed as a car accident with no fatalities - it hides the actual effects.

This is honestly the current generations 9-11. Or Pearl Harbor. Not the least as it's going to kill way more then those incidents. It's an event of momentous import. The world is going to change. We have been sold the promise of globalization as somehow ushering in a golden age. Instead we get the third world invading Greece and being called "refugees" followed up by a viral pandemic that originated in a country that tried to hide the danger from everyone and then chose to leverage its position as a keystone manufacturing hub to horde the supplies for itself.

The experiment in a global economy has failed. And its failure will have far reaching ramifications. The people who die due to corona virus will merely be the opening salvo. This catastrophe may very well usher in the age of unrest worried about in Science Fiction. I am not worried about this pandemic. I am worried about what comes next.

Those Union Square train pics at 8 am are fucking bananas for anybody that ever lived in the city. At 8 am those trains would be fucking packed. No chance of getting a seat much less several. Personally I've been walking and biking most places and my mom had her boss give her a lift to work so she wouldn't have to take the train.

Look at the death rates by country by recoveries versus deaths and take into account a correct delay. Richer countries have higher mortality rates. Why? Because we are fat and have more diabetics and underlying conditions from being fat. We will have probably a higher mortality rate in the USA than China - simply because we are fat and unhealthy, have more diabetic patients and more patients that have had heart attacks - because we are fat.

We are more honest.

They don't generally report that at first. It is like so many Iranians, so many Chinese, so many Kenyans.

At this phase, the racial makeup of the infected doesn't say much, because there really hasn't been enough to make a statistical dent.

For example, if one old white guy and two old black guys in Georgia die, that tells you that two black guys and a white guy died of Corona Virus.

They break infected and deceased down by race, class, gender, region, etc, with the AIDS virus, for example, because the data is wide and deep. But when it was a novel infection, it was called "GRID" (Gay related Immunodeficiency). Epidemiologists saw some "gay" connection, but it took a few years for them to discover the precise mode of transmission (and non-transmission) and saw patterns in who was getting it, where, and under what sociocultural conditions.

With the WuFlu, we have a bunch of Han Chinese, in China, Italians, in Italy, British in the UK.

However it is telling, given the social behaviors of Africans and Middle Easterners, that they aren't catching it in droves.

Maybe it Is a hot dry climate?
Or maybe ethnicity matters and some diseases impact different ethnicities in different ways?

again you for some reason compare the deathrate to the infected, why? they are still infected, it makes absolutely no sense to compare it to them other than to get a false sense of relief, look at the recovered and the deaths. 1266 deaths, 1439 recovered and 1328 in serious condition.

Brooklyn VA doc tests positive for Corona. The best part is he didn't get it by treating patients, but via community spread.

Just when everyone thought the VA couldn't possibly get worse, it never ceases to amaze
