Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Just when everyone thought the VA couldn't possibly get worse, it never ceases to amaze

I think the fact that the VA found it out is a point in their favor rather then against. Mild power level but I use VA healthcare and the hospital I go to with for clinics as of last week had already set up quarantine protocols. Nobody could enter the building unless they submitted to a screening that included a temperature check. This VA doc probably showed up to work, failed the screen and got sent to testing.

It's an interesting idea, but I can't really think of what would cause the virus to "racially profile", as it were. Then again, I'm not exactly an expert in genetics and I won't pretend to be.
There are tons of genetic markers which make us ethnically different. Some are even noncontroversial (23andme is a website and it works). Those markers cause our racial variegation and some of those attributes make us higher risks for some diseases than others.

On top of that, the way that a particular ethnicity lives within its society may cause it to be more exposed to certain disease risks.

Or maybe ethnicity matters and some diseases impact different ethnicities in different ways?
Different cultures behave differently.

For example, today I saw three elderly Korean ladies, walking down the street arm in arm, like a little wall.

I am not sure that you could PAY an elderly American or British person enough, to stand or walk in such close proximity to another.

Spanish people (Spain) feel comfortable standing 6 inches from you when speaking to you. Anglo-Americans prefer 12 -18 inches.

Finland and Wisconsin (for example) are buried in snow half the year. So people from regions like that entertain at home. So their social habits are indoors, and often blocked by inclement weather.

Most Italians wake up, brush their teeth, make some toast and a strong coffee and hit the streets. They often live with their parents, because of a cultural pattern of inheriting the grandparents flat. But when the grandparents live into their 80's and 90's, people are still living with mom, up to their 30's and 40's and even 50's. So no babies because folks can't or don't want to start their lives up, until they get their own flat.

So lifestyle factors weigh in, a lot, in how disease is transmitted and how a population ages.

Italians are like that from cradle to the grave. Old men get together and drink coffee and play dominoes and shoot the shit, all day. Come home for dinner, etc.

Genes might play a role. But in the case of COVID 19, we don't know really until we have a lot of cases. If Black people simply are not dying from it, even homeless ones in New York, DC and LA then they could have some weird immunity.

They are much more immune to malaria, for example, then we are.

But can they block off areas like Pine Street (in Long Beach where there are a lot of bars and well-paid professional singles) and Hollywood? And like streets full of bars in college towns?

Can they force the business owners to shutter the place for a couple of weeks? Or lock down the local gym?

Yes.

None of this has ever been used before so I don't know how the hell it will go down if it comes to it.

Oh, I mean I get the whole genetic marker thing, and I know it can affect susceptibility to disease (like the whole sickle-cell anemia/malaria thing). But (AFAIK) that's not the case for any other coronavirus, so it would seem weird that it would mutate in just that way. Then again, I suppose it originated there, so maybe it isn't so crazy.

The cultural factors are probably more likely, though.

Italians are 100% European, except people from the south who are also related to Arabs and Berbers, etc. But they are NOT Negroes, in any way, shape or form. They are Southern European. As you go north, toward Central Europe, they whiten up to a point of looking like a mix of Mediterranean and Germanic stock.

You are assuming that the “Italians” who have died of Chinese Flu are not of Asian descent. There are a lot of Chinese immigrants in Italy who work in the textile and leather industries.

We were more talking about the relatively large number of ethnic Chinese in Italy, and how it was possible that a large amount of the sick/dead might be Chinese. Not ethnic Italians.

It worries me when @Otterly doesn't post for a while.

In other news, galaxy brain Prime Minister of Aboland Scott Morrison advising no more mass gatherings (500+) from Monday, but he will still be attending a football match this weekend and encourages others to do so because obviously Corona Chan knows not to make a move until Monday. The absolute state of Australian Government.

Asked about the apparent gap between the emergency budgetary measures unveiled on Thursday and the public health advice advocating a business-as-usual approach to sporting events, travel, work and so on, Morrison said:

Well, it’s very simple. You follow the health advice. I’m going to the footy this weekend and I’m looking forward to it. And I’m sure many Australians would. And I encourage you to, unless you’re ill and unless there’s reason that with your own, if you’re in self-isolation for medical reasons or you’re actually ill, that I wouldn’t suggest you go.
By Friday afternoon, the distance between developments and the Morrison government’s static position on public gatherings was becoming unsustainable. That turned to untenable when Murphy advised that mass gatherings (more than 500 people) for sporting events should no longer be allowed. Morrison later announced that the government will be “advising against” such gatherings from Monday.

Had to stop at the store to get cream. Most of the beef was gone except for brisket. Whole chickens and some other bits were there. Water was finally out but I have enough to go for a while. Beyond that everything else, even TP and paper towels were still good but not exactly a good amount.

I got laughed at by some zoomer for wearing a mask but you keep laughing when your mom dies.

If you're looking for toilet paper; try more obscure stores. Most camping and hunting stores, big lots, and dollar tree and general had some in stock today.
Dollar Tree and Dollar General probably aren't the best suggestions in poorer areas. I've been hearing about fights breaking out in those. Big Lots is a good one.

No data caps for At&t, T-Moble , Sprint for the next sixty days plus other things.

Meanwhile my ISP is probably trying to figure out if they get away with tripling the overage charges.
Corona-chan did one good thing. Hope the unlimited data becomes permanent. Hope you get unlimited data, too.

In my experience with South Koreans, they tend to stand much closer to other people than Americans do. It can be pretty awkward for the Korean foreign exchange students in the US.

This is the tl;dr of US pandemic laws.

The federal government can do whatever the fuck it wants to anyone, including US citizens, that come in from outside the US if it has reason to believe they pose a danger. Yes. They can move you to a military base and put you under armed guard.

Within the States, the State governments can do the whole armed guard thing and they can even go so far as send the national guard to your home, cuff you and move you to a FEMA camp under armed guard.

Their is case law on this and it to this point only deals with State level actions. Basic takeaway of it all is the State must show it is acting in good faith and there is an IMMEDIATE danger to the public. If both those criteria are met your State can do pretty much anything it wants to you if it serves the interest of halting the disease.

Among the deceased, median age is 81. Chinese immigration is very new to the region. Therefore one might conjecture that white folks are dying of it more than Chinese immigrants.

Barrack Obama got away with drone striking US citizens without due process, the NSA has been illegally logging everything you do for decades and these people can't fathom a quarantine for the sake of public health, Hell, they straight up gave black soldiers syphilis without telling them to document the effects a couple of decades back.

I totally agree. My post was more to point out how horrifyingly widespread this shit seems to be. You'd think a doctor would catch that shit at work.

Vermont Governor Phil Scott declares a state of emergency lasting until 15 April, 2020. No public school closures yet, but possible. Several colleges in the state have altered their spring semester to be either online only or delayed until after a now two week long spring break. Two people are in treatment for covid-19 in the state; one in Bennington and another at the UVM Medical Center in Burlington. The case in Chittenden County is a severe case with the 70 y/o patient in critical condition.

In other news, I went to various supermarkets today to both scope things out and get some pickling goods. Everywhere had a run on toilet paper. Not one shelf was stocked, let alone full.
Other goods missing were certain canned vegetables, paper towels, bleach/surface disinfectant, hand sanitizer, rice, sugar (for some inexplicable reason), ready to make foods (microwaveables), and pasta.
Flour was mostly in stock, as were many dairy, fresh produce, and meat products.

As Gov. Scott's press conference was today, Mrs. Skeltal and I saw a few of those light up road signs along I-89 extolling drivers to get the latest info on covid-19.
For reference those things are normally used for bad weather conditions, road work, or anti-texting campaigns.

We live in interesting times indeed. :story:

Edit: @Null, when do we get our hazmat suits back?

It's a second-degree misdemeanor if you violate quarantine here.

I suspect nobody's ever used this, but, Christ.

From https://www.thelocal.it/20200311/coronavirus-what-do-we-know-about-the-victims-in-italy
Most of those who have died ( 468 were in the Lombardy region, which has been hit hardest by the outbreak.

From the Wikipedia article about chinamen living in Italy:
Regions with significant populations:
Lombardy, Tuscany, Veneto

The fact that no journalists are writing about the ethnicity of the Corona-virus deaths suggests there is a racial issue.
My guess is that Asians are the ones dying of the Wuhan Flu and that this fact is being covered up for some reason.
It's worth considering, but I don't think it matters.

Mortality is probably higher for a certain demographic but there's no explanation for why. Any information we get right now would be a guess, and probably a bad one.

The thing that concerns me most is Africa. There are not a lot of reports out of there. One could be an optimist and believe the higher temperatures and increased humidity is keeping the virus at bay. The reality is the ministries of health are probably not doing a good job tracking what's happening.
