Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

I think the economy bouncing back in just a few months is optimistic. Even IF this virus is contained within a few months, there has been a massive disruption of supply from China that has been caused by the outbreak. Not only are many factories no longer in service, but travel restrictions are naturally going to be economically problematic. In the long run, this recession will likely strengthen global economies, but I'm not confident we will see the economy recover before the election.

as for his twitter being "unhinged," Trump comparing himself to Nero comes to mind. I get that, to his base, this comes off as banter, but the majority of people see that as crazy.

At this point, I don't think that anybody (including myself) is expecting a full economic recovery by the end of this year. That's a pipe dream. However, I do expect to see some things start to repair themselves if this virus can run its course in the upcoming weeks and months. In order for the economy to fix itself, the people need to have confidence in what's going on right now with COVID-19. If Trump can successfully rebuild that confidence by doing a good job at combating this pandemic, then I don't think that reelection will be an issue for him.

And again, in comparison to Trump's opponents ... They have nothing to offer in terms of any solutions. The best they've got against Trump at the moment is "He shook hands with people yesterday REEEE." I'm not even hearing much criticism about his travel bans anymore because I think most people immediately realized it was the right call to make. Bernie can say all he wants in a Town Hall about how closing the borders is always racist and xenophobic ... Most Americans now will realize that wanting open borders at all times, at least in times like these, is an incredibly dangerous policy to push.

If anything, this pandemic is proving all of Trump's anti-globalism talk correct. Of course the media will not depict things that way, but if we start seeing some positive results with Trump's reaction to this, then I think the majority of voters are going to go with him, especially given who he is tentatively up against.

He needs single moms to go to work.

So again why does DeBlasio not want to cancel public schools in NYC? Does his base not want him to or is he just stupid?

As someone quoted a brazillian pages back the majority of your health care providers (READ NURSES) are female. Having no day care for your healthcare staff means the single mom's crotchspawn has to be attended to as she can't leave them with any relative, family member, and sure as shit not with a a neighbor (Cause God Forbid, New Yorkers have friends amongst their neighbors). the US lives in a society where family ties are wide spread and taking care of someone else's kid is "Not My Business".

Therefore, the mayor is doing the right thing and providing free day care for his nursing staff.

Anyone who thinks that this will sink Trump are deluding themselves. In Bongland and other places free trade globalists are changing to being nationalistic protectionists. Not having our own medicine being made here and China threatening us with it. A pandemic originating in a foreign country. Etc. This is essentially everything Trump warned against on an epic level, and he's the type to remind people about it.

Went to the commissary (military grocery store) on the usual Saturday morning shopping run.

Last Saturday place was busier than usual. Today, slammed. Saw a LOT of people never seen before. Learned authorized patrons are bringing in a lot of guests, and these people are also shopping. They just add their loot to the sponsor's purchases.

Saw a lot of panic buying of water, rice, toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, certain canned goods. Was ashamed to see the behavior of so many of my fellow military people. Believed they had more discipline than to panic buy. I sure was wrong.

Luckily, we didn't need too much this week, and was able to get just about everything.

Noticed a very frail elderly couple ahead of me in the checkout line. Husband was wearing plastic gloves. They kept their empty cart between me and them in the checkout line so I couldn't get too close.

Commissary employees busting their asses between stocking and the checkout lanes. Even saw an Army full colonel, Presidio of Monterey garrison commander, in uniform helping out.

Emailed commissary manager with kudos for his people. Suggested temporary item limits on water, toilet paper, rice, paper towels, and hand sanitizer be imposed. Also suggested temporarily restricting guests only to caregivers of disabled patrons. These measures would help ensure everyone has the chance to get what they need.

Will be interesting to see how things go next Saturday.

Seriously, people, relax. The sky isn't falling. We aren't all going to die. Few will even catch this virus. We'll get through it and get over it.

Fair enough.

on an unrelated note, the Trump - Nero comparison is incidentally pretty accurate. During the fire of Rome, historical documents claim that Nero actually personally helped dampen the flames and was incredibly involved. It was only told as a narrative by his detractors later on in legend that he personally orchestrated the fire and played his lyre while Rome burnt.

Trump isn't a hero, but regardless of any positive steps he takes to contain this disaster, he'll always be playing his lyre in the oval office.

We can argue back and forth Trumps policies but it would be a shame to smear this thread.

The bottom line is all governments acted too little too late and nothing being done now will do anything but slow it - no government plans to stop it.

And regardless of whether we want to get into a mine field about globalism and where toys, TP and medicine are made it frankly makes not a shred of difference when it is a pandemic - not en epidemic.

No governments response is limited by where anything is made. More to the point, no governments response is limited if they listened to the WHO early on and did what they actually asked.

What IS important right now is which countries make the right choices out of a list of bad choices to make (there are no good ones). The United States predictive response was terrible, the response was terrible, the current response is terrible and nothing indicates that this will change.

I still see planes flying, ergo I know the USA and other countries don't have the guts to do what is needed until it is too late. Its not the international planes doing the damage, it is the domestic ones spreading it.

Ironically, Mexico should seriously consider closing it's borders to the United States.

Trump literally waged a trade war on China for years.

I doubt voters will forget that.

They remember President Trump called the Chinese on their undeclared trade war on us over the last two decades, at least. They've already seen how stupid it was for manufacturers worldwide to put so many production and supply eggs in the Chinese basket. And now they see China as a not-ready-for-prime-time power.

This. Also, if hand sanitizer is sold out everywhere you shop, try purchasing alcohol wipes.
This is about how skin on your hands will look like after prolonged usage of alcohol wipes / other alcohol based disinfectants

For what? The Bongland ones were discussed a couple of pages back.

Dude, you have been gleefully sperging about how drumpf is done for sure for days. Too late to be above it all now.

A few tips for anyone looking for choice items that are otherwise hard to find.

Mycologists are going to hate me but ehh, most of them are hippies and like to share. Online mycology shops have 70% isopropyl alcohol, gloves and masks (however useless surgical masks may be). Prices seem the same as always.

Anecdote from a neighbour "Not a single baked bean in Asda..."

I've heard of and seen mixed shortages that are often replenished the next day, it's more waves of panic buying here but TP and antibacs are tough to find. Tiny bottles of alcohol based gels are selling at a huge markup. What I bought for 3 for a quid a few weeks back is now a fiver for a single teeny bottle :story:

No shortage of liquid soap and tissues. Madness.

That’s why you need to buy hand cream if you use lots of those alcohol based disinfectants. Not taking care of skin just makes you more prone to infection.

UK figures (I know they've already been covered, but still)

37,746 have been tested (+4975)

36,606 negative

1140 positive (+342)

Bare in mind, unlike the US who's CDC demanded only official cases went through them initially every last NHS hospital has a lab for testing a wide range of diseases and these places work fast.

Blood testing, for example, is done within the hour on a regular basis. Suspected Covid-19 cases are given top priority due to the infection rate and the NHS was initially designed to create and maintain a body of fighting men in the event of war and these legacy systems now remain and extend to detecting and combating plagues and infectious diseases.

I suspect Poland is still reliant on an older, Soviet based model which while good (if funded) has more centralisation. From what I remember about the quirk of the Polish System (as a secondary, smaller version exists in the UK) Poles tend to go straight to professionals instead of using GPs as gatekeepers as we do in the main NHS. So testing may remain spotty,
Thanks, the daily figure is what I was interested in. I doubt we can pull these numbers off. I looked it up and currently only one hospital is diagnosing for corona in its own lab, the remaining samples are tested in regional sanitary-epidemiological centres. Stuff takes time. We're used to it.

Your remarks on our healthcare are correct to a large degree. You can't go to a state-funded doctor without a referral from the GP, then you often have to wait weeks if not months for your appointment and sit in the queue for hours while the doc comes in an hour or two late because he's working in multiple places and his hours overlap. So most people will just pay for a private appointment rather than deal with this bullshit (almost always true for dentistry or psychiatry). I don't know anyone who would do that with flu-like symptoms though.

Uline still has a bit of industrial left.

Maybe you should drink less so you didn't have to use a roll of toilet paper a day to swab down your piss covered vagina, femoid
Just because I identify as a female and a lesbian doesn't mean I have a vagina bigot.
I was just explaining to the virgin why a pack of TP doesn't last for over a year in most households.

Bailed out of town last night around 11PM and spent all night driving to nowhere USA. Doctor cleared my health a few hours earlier.

If there was a gate to shut behind me, that fucker slammed shut just after I left. Holy shit I'm glad I listened to my gut. Been drinking beer and firing guns in my sister's back yard and smiling and laughing all day. Holy fucking shit I'm glad I listened to my gut. Stay safe Kiwis.
