Gotta go on a rant so please excuse the sperging, but holy shit I'm getting tired of people in my area/state bitching about the fact that because schools are closed, their children won't be able to eat. So basically some schools are still open on a limited basis so that kids can come there and eat. Firstly, what fucking good does closing the schools do if they're going to come in, be sat down in a room together and served food? Sure, they aren't going to be around eachother or in close-quarters for the normal duration of a school day, but you're still going to have kids coming in and transmitting the virus to one-another and staff. So what was the point of closing these institutions in the first place?

Secondly, aren't children supposed to have at least one adult in their life who lives with them and, oh, I don't know, provides necessities for these children? You know, food, water, hygiene products, a place to sleep. Aren't there entire government programs dedicated solely to this purpose, ensuring that families are fed? I know it's gonna be difficult for them but maybe if Shaneequa could stop trading her SNAP benefits for crack just for a month or so, she could feed her kids and wouldn't need to rely on institutions in her community to provide a meal for her kids.

Third, listen I know it's not a nice prospect for kids and it's not a good look for them to be hungry. But let's be realistic here. You do not need three meals a day plus snacks inbetween. That's a nice commodity and it's good to have a routine, but in a situation where you may be forced to isolate yourself from the community and as a result will need to ration your supplies, you MOST CERTAINLY do not need three meals a day. Actually, unless you're driving fenceposts or swinging a pickaxe all day, you don't need three meals a day then either. Sitting on your ass all day at home because you're quarantined, or even sitting on your ass in an office cubicle all day, these activities do not expend enough calories to require one to consume three meals a day plus a little treat from Baskin Robbins. I know it's unpleasant for many and a daunting prospect for people adjusted to this routine, but crisis situations no matter how temporary will require you to adjust certain behaviors and maybe even alter your lifestyle. Rationing will require you to pretty much just be hungry for most of the day. Simply being hungry will not kill you, and when it does begin to kill you, you'll sure the hell know it when it happens. Most people can go quite a while on no food if they're mostly sedentary during that time. It's not great for you, but you will survive.

Anyway, that's my autism for the day. Sorry. But I find it difficult to believe that we live at a time and place where parents don't understand that children require food, make no plans to provide said food when shit gets hairy, and then demand that many people be put at risk because they didn't plan ahead or consider their options. This 'three squares a day, no matter what' mentality will cause people to burn through shit very, very rapidly if they don't understand that they'll have to adjust for the current scenario and most of them don't. You're not going to be eating a full breakfast, a submarine sandwich at lunch and half a pizza for supper unless you have no sense and you don't need it anyway. My breakfast most days is a cigarette and a cup of joe. I'm still alive. Most people, too, could afford to make a few new notches in their belt whether it's doomsday [it really isn't] or not.

It appears that you haven't gotten the memo .... Nope. Apparently childcare and hot meals are the responsibility of the School District. Frees parents up to work, and if they become a one-income house for as little as a month, they won't make rent or house payments.

This whole system is tied together by zip-ties, superglue, clap-board and styrophome peanuts.

Honestly I can not judge people who are chronically and pathologically low income like that. It is how "the system" has evolved since the 1960's.

Ok, Friday was the last day for school LA Unified School District. This is no small decision. Locking kids in the house. If the second largest school district in the nation considers it dangerous for children to attend school, this is something to take seriously.

Husband does not want to go to the stores and hoard. He says it is too unsafe, because of the crowds.

For the sake of keeping you and your loved ones safe, it might be time to think outside the box. For example, let's say you have a bunch of oatmeal stored because you don't really like it ... well you can actually mix it with some ground beef and taco seasoning to make a meaty side.

Don't be afraid to make weird meal combos ... like ... do you have a bunch of those sweet instant oatmeal packets? Well, nasty as it sounds if you get stuck, you can still eat if you mix up a couple of those, bake up a couple of straggling fish-sticks in the freezer and have a side of kidney beans. You can eat this random stuff in courses, (French and Italian style), to make it more palatable.

That is just a random example but the best thing to do is stay out of stores, unless your cupboards are empty. It is hard for me to swallow my pride and cobble together such a bizarre menu, but it means less exposure to germ-infested grocery stores.

Thanks for the report which verifies what I have stated yesterday in my area. Things are going sideways and depending on where you live it is going to get much much worse.

Not because of the virus in general but the asshats out there who are panic buying.

If I have the time I'll go on in more detail on why the US is doing this bullshit and how it does tie in with our Commerce infrastructure, and why there are shortages now than in recent part of our history.

But in short they way we used to protected ourselves from disease, how we transport food has deteriorated in the past 20 years due to greed and neglect. The virus is showing the weaknesses in the US as well as the rest of the world.

A lot of this is politics. The Superintendent of LAUSD, when initially asked about school closures he said that 85% of LAUSD kids live in poverty, and subsequently depend on school services for two meals a day.

On paper it might seem that way. However people game the system. You should see some of the cars people drive around here. However my son is entitled to two free meals a day, simply because of the neighborhood/zone. But if you look at the cost of housing in LA County, you aren't going to get into anything resembling a basic family home, for less than 400 grand.

So how where is this abject poverty? It has to do with who declares their income, when, and how. If there are three-four middle to low incomes under one roof, the parents declare their incomes, and claim the kids as dependents, then the single brother, sister, aunt, uncle, or benefits-collecting granny is separate. So you have three "poor" adults, and two tax files, under one roof.

So technically we are surrounded by a grim economic landscape. But drive around a bit and you will see perfect landscapes, designer boots, expensive birthday parties, etc.

Yes, some people really are poor. Or struggling. But the reasons are all very different.

Superintendent has to say this stuff because he too, is gaming the system, to appeal to the state's purse.

Normally they'd be 24 hour locations or at least open until 1AM, but supposedly they're doing this so they 'have more time to restock' or something. Of course the efficacy of that is dependent on actually having freight to move and merchandise to stock, which might not be the case soon enough. More likely is that they're giving the weird people on third shift more time to smack their puds and fraternize. Seriously though, third shift at Walmart, it's ALWAYS fucking Fright Night.

The New system means grocery gets stocked between 4 PM and 11 PM by the Second Shift..which makes Third Shift look amazing in comparison.

I suspect a big part of it is to keep away the people coming in at 2 a.m. and raiding everything they just stocked. At least this way, it's all more-or-less on the shelf when they open, so everyone gets a fair crack at it.
