Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Interest rates to 0 is a huge deal. Literally free money if you can work it right.

Literally debating hitting my life savings right now and and buying property.
Please, stop with the thinking this is a gift - its a bloody curse.

If you dont know why zero interest rates are insanely dangerous, the Market will tell you why in the next 10 days.

Money in an environment that has zero rates isn't free - it is costing you to have cash, that's why the interest rates are zero. This is a disaster, especially given the yield rates on treasuries.

Italy is showing a 7% death rate, there is currently no reason not to assume the UK's own branch of this will be similar.

I'm not sure if rates are slowing slightly due to different methodology used now as they're only testing patients already in hospital.

The "presumed" figure was 10-15,000 country-wide who will only show moderate flu symptoms and shake it off.

PP, you brought up an interesting point. I wouldn't say the UK's death rate would be similar to Italy until the UK medical system, overall age of the population, overall health, population density, and smoking rates were factored in. Unless I have missed something, seems like Italy is a good environment for the virus. Weak health system, older population, heavy percentage of smokers. UK could be less hospitable.

Day's over, so I can post my usual lazy summary and go away. With another 1000 or so samples tested, Poland stands at 125 total cases for a daily gain of 21... Which means fifteen fewer confirmed cases than yesterday. Interesting, perhaps encouraging, but meaningless on its own. I remember other countries having slower days then spiking again.

It was a very quiet day here. The Internet is full of reports and photos depicting empty places that would normally be crowded: vacant main streets, plazas, shopping centres. People are taking this seriously. I was on a short walk. A few people walking their dogs, going out with their kids, several children playing football, all very sparse. And almost no traffic.

I hear the Czechs are imposing nationwide quarantine: you can go to work and back, visit a doctor, do some small shopping, maybe visit close family and that's it. Wonder if we're about to do the same... I've heard politicians mentioning that there will be more preventive measures later on, without specifying what exactly. Not much else left though.
I was just about to post the numbers. The only thing worth mentioning is the statement by the health ministry concerning the number of confirmed cases which can go over 1000-1500 in around ten days and the expected number of people under quarantine which could reach 100k. Then again, Spain which has far more cases has just recently employed measures similar to our government.

Edit: I should go to sleep.

No, you press the BULLSHIT button. Once again, the Chinese lie. Must be pathological. My guess...all Chinese numbers are off by a factor of 3 to 5. Would say people in Washington and certain other world capitals know the actual Chinese numbers, or very close to it.
Our numbers are off by an even greater margin in the USA. Go ahead, call a hotline and see what advice they give you and try getting a test. There are tends of thousands of cases in the USA and hospitals and doctors are doing their best to NOT diagnose them. Why? Who wants to have their clinic shit down for quarantine because they weren't taking precautions? Or their entire hospital staff ordered in quarantine?

The stories are POURING IN from all over the USA about how if they cant tell the doctor that they knowingly were in contact with a confirmed case, then they wont test unless they show severe symptoms, essentially allowing cases to walk around. In West Virginia (A state with no cases - what a fucking lie), a guy came back from Italy. He is in not hospital but is showing mild symptoms, but because he couldn't say he was with a known confirmed case and arrived back just prior to the cutting off in Italy, they aren't testing him.

Yet the state shut down all the schools in a state with no cases. Huh?

2 weeks ago Friday we were at 20. 1 week ago Friday 220. This Friday 2,300. 48 hours later we are at 3600. USA.

So which country do you think is telling lies about testing capability and spread rates? The USA.

We've been had for suckers,

Governor shut down all bars and restaurants here this afternoon causing a massive rush on the already strained grocery stores. I was able to escape with $150 worth of frozen pizzas and frozen pot pies. No fights or anything that I saw. Bread, eggs, milk, and the meat department were completely sold out of literally everything by the time I got there. No toilet paper, but that goes without saying.

People are also making a massive grab for tobacco. I went to four different gas stations to scrounge together a month's supply of dip.

Lots of people around here spreading the rumor that they are going to declare martial law next week.

We are so fucked.

Is someone DDOSing Archive.is? Or did some dipshit create a plugin that auto-sends every url they go to to the site or something?

So New York City went from the a handful of cases Friday to 326 today, and five dead from Corona-chan. The unbearable faggot de Blasio is fighting with the health commissioner and they aren't even on speaking terms because this dumbass is trying to micromanage the whole COVID-19 crisis but he doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about and has been videoed giving people the wrong advice about the virus. People will die and it's a given thousands across the city are infected. I hope this filthy snake gets the virus, is stuck in an ICU (hopefully Corona-chan will put him to sleep) and someone with actual brains takes over who actually listens to a goddamn doctor instead of pandering to commie chinks.

The Ohio governor is considering closing bars and restaurants entirely. anyone still eating out at this point is naive imo.

I have a buddy who hasn't done any stockpiling at all, doesn't even have food in the house, cause he works at a big chain restaurant (sit down style) and they feed their employees every day. Part of the perk of the job.

I asked him what he's done to prep just in case shit goes sideways. "Nothing. I work at [Restaraunt]."

"... What if they close your restaurant down?"

"They won't."

"... What if they do?"

"I guess I'll starve, cause I wouldn't have any money then."

Yeah, that's possible. I've heard some experts estimate that what we're doing now will only become noticeable more than a week from now. South Korea only managed to slow down their growth curve after the number of cases surged past 4000. The important thing is we're not late. Spain or Italy already screwed themselves over.

The NHS is already prepping to cancel, delay or otherwise clear the decks for non-corona cases or absolute emergencies. Matt Hancock is encouraging UK manufacturers to make more masks and ventilators for the hospitals. As we're seeing from the daily testing figures, the NHS is not short of being able to test for this damn thing too, with daily testing figures easily hitting 5,000 or more compared to other states.

People are already enacting social distancing polices, lots of companies are telecommuting and short of a national lockdown (still considered last resort) there's really not much more to be done. Daily rates seem stable within the 300 range ish, but the deaths are starting to rise.

Disney and the school districts and churches etc are shut down to avoid creating hubs. They are shut down in order to soften the curve. When it gets into a contained population like that is when it explodes. With the big danger being it getting into the health care providers undetected. That’s the actual difference between Italy and Iran, and Japan and South Korea. In Italy and Iran it got into both the healthcare system, and the local gathering places, the Mosques and Churches, before it was detected. In Japan and Korea they managed to get the Social Distancing policies in place before it did so, and thus were able to greatly flatten the curve. And that was with the loopy Shinji Cult trying to catch and spread it.

The US is not immune. But we are, at this point at least, somewhat ahead of the game. We do appear to be flattening the curve. We will see some spikes, and nobody is safe from it. There is still a great risk of a breakout somewhere that allows it to vastly propagate. The NYC or similar dense urban hospitals being a big point of concern.

We will see two types of Spikes. Contained Spikes, where the Spike occurs within a tightly contained group and is unlikely to spread much beyond that contained population. Nursing Homes and Prisons come to mind. Beyond spreading to the occupants there is limited potential to go beyond that. Each infected cannot spread to 3-5 other people outside of their contained environment. So the spike peaks with that contained population. These look nasty and horrifying in the news. But are not a sign of things getting out of control in the wider population.

the bigger danger is the Uncontained Spikes. Whereby it gets into a tight but mobile population. A School, Church or heaven forbid Hospital. Where each infected in the tight group can then be taken outside and handed off to others. That’s what triggers the Wuhan levels of shit hitting the fan.
I don't disagree with anything you've said. We're flattening the curve because of social distancing, though, and this is an absolutely crucial time for it. That's kind of what I'm trying to say, here. If you can stay home, do it. If you gotta go to work to keep your desperately-needed job, by all means do it, but everyone the world over can live without getting crunk in a nightclub for a few weeks. Don't be dumb and don't be irresponsible because the success of these measures depends heavily on the general public taking this seriously enough to take a break from doing lines off a hooker's asshole in the nearest pub.
I think the truth is that they are purposefully holding back testing because it's very widespread and everyone who gets pozzed will want to be in the hospital and clog up the system. Talking to people I know in hospitals that is the biggest concern right now, a repeat of the situation in Italy. We have a limited number of hospital beds and staff. So they limit the tests and tell high ranking govt officials and large corporations to shut shit down.
The thing is that someone with a cold needs to make very different choices vs someone with Red Lung. Say someone gets cold symptoms, so they self-isolate. Do they need to stay isolated for two weeks, even after they feel better? What if that will cause them trouble at work? If they have Red Lung, they should stay out and their employer won't fuck them for it because they don't want to get Bat AIDS either. If it's a cold or a mild flu, that's a massive overreaction that could cause all sorts of problems. They can't get tested. So what do they do? Just guess?
cheers, appreciate the thoughts! I’m Ok, I’m sure it’s just another bloody cough, this year has been shit for them.
On the off chance this is it, so far it’s gone:
Very high fever and sweating one night, and tingling in limbs, gone in the late morning, followed by a gradual onset of shortness of breath and a dry unpleasant cough. Palpitations, low fever which fluctuates and fatigue. Same as any chest bug except the palpitations, which are unpleasant. I can tell I’m fighting something off but I’m Ok as long as I don’t exert myself. Husband has same symptoms, kids have a minor cough. This is day 3. We are staying away from everyone as per local guidelines. Probably just a cold.
I hope you feel better soon fam. Your contributions around here are greatly valued.

If people REALLY want to complain, complain about Emperor Xi and China. They invented the virus, they let it loose, they've treated their innocent people like animals and criminals, and they do their very best to deny the truth and propagate lies. Well, Xi and his running dogs have lost that propaganda war, mercifully.
Actually, it's Americans visiting China who are the bigger threat now. So, if anything, China should be complaining about America for failing to manage the virus.

Fortunately, China has the capability to carry out tests on everyone who enters the country, and they're not afraid to impose quarantines and travel restrictions on infected gweilo.

Yup, I gotta make a tobacco run tomorrow and I'm hoping it isn't gone. Course it's a stupid thing to put myself at risk for, and smoking increases the likelihood of death from this thing, but given the stress of this shit the last thing most people already hooked need is to try and quit cold turkey all of a sudden. It's too bad I didn't have more god damned sense as a teenager. It's cliche but people ought to hear it again, don't start using tobacco if you're not already hopelessly addicted.

Anyway, been pretty quiet in my neck of the woods today. Streets are eerily empty. I'm really wondering what the next couple of weeks will bring.

That's if you believe what the Chinese say. I don't. Far as managing the virus, China is talking shit. They allowed their people early on not just to run all over the country for the Lunar New Year, but all over the world. They invented this virus in the first place. And China has shown us about welding people's doors shut, etc.

Yeah, we'll see how things go. Like to think better than in Italy. Hope so.

On a different note, here's an NYT article that actually tells the truth. Will wonders never cease.

Given our governor's utter incompetence so far, I don't blame Holt for taking action now.

I think shutting everything down here now would be a bad idea. People are dumb, and they would get cabin fever by the time shit starts getting bad here.
