Wuhan Coronavirus: Lockdowns, Quarantines, Cancellations

Israel is getting locked down starting today. The government treats it very severly and closes everything that is not essential (including universities and schools). The Supermarket next to my home is still stocked on most groceries, with the things that are in really short supply beind rice and some canned foods. The country's insistence on having self sufficent agriculture payed up big time but the question is medicine supply.
The infection rate is a steady ~25 cases per day for the last week, it's pretty much a waiting game for when it shoot up and whether it's blocked.

BREAKING: California Governor Newsom urges all those who are 65 years and older or have chronic conditions to isolate themselves at home, orders the closure of bars and nightclubs

wasn't this part of the plot of the novel "submission"

Well Submission is essentially about France becoming a caliphate, but at its core, it’s about a middle aged depressed dude that wants to get laid (cue Muslim arranged marriages).

Right now, the vibe is more of a secular authoritarian regime. And since they’re planning on implementing curfews, army patrols to forbid people from going outside, and maybe allowing a maximum of 20 articles of food per day per family, it reeks more of communism than anything else.

We had to queue to enter the supermarket itself (only to find most shelves empty) this afternoon, and my mother remarked that it reminded her of the Soviet Union and her childhood.

1. Hasn't it been a "secular authoritarian" regime ever since Macron-daitoryoh decided to gas his own people during the Yellow Vest protests

2. You're not the only one who's been comparing the supermarket sweeps to the USSR, I've heard it around myself

oh yes, France has certainly become less democratic since Macron took power, but it still has a long, long way to go before becoming any real dictature.

And the USSR comparison wasn’t motivated by the sweeps but by the sheer fact that you now have to queue to enter the grocery stores themselves. Though both are valid.

Michigan, USA:
Michigan Department of Corrections (State Prison) halts all in-person visits, until further notice.
"For staff working in the facilities, all will be asked a series of screening questions and will have their temperature checked before being allowed entrance into the prison. For those with a temperature above 100.4, they will not be allowed to work."
State government website (archive)

To recap: Michigan has banned assemblies of over 250, closed K-12 schools, halted prison visits, and closed hospitals to visitors (except parents of minors and relatives of the dying) and non-essential staff.

The CDC is recommending that all events with more than 50 people in attendance should be canceled or postponed for the next 8 weeks.
Excerpt said:
Guidance as of 3/15/2020

Large events and mass gatherings can contribute to the spread of COVID-19 in the United States via travelers who attend these events and introduce the virus to new communities. Examples of large events and mass gatherings include conferences, festivals, parades, concerts, sporting events, weddings, and other types of assemblies. These events can be planned not only by organizations and communities but also by individuals.

Therefore, CDC, in accordance with its guidance for large events and mass gatherings, recommends that for the next 8 weeks, organizers (whether groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States.

Events of any size should only be continued if they can be carried out with adherence to guidelines for protecting vulnerable populations, hand hygiene, and social distancing. When feasible, organizers could modify events to be virtual.

This recommendation does not apply to the day to day operation of organizations such as schools, institutes of higher learning, or businessesThis recommendation is made in an attempt to reduce introduction of the virus into new communities and to slow the spread of infection in communities already affected by the virus. This recommendation is not intended to supersede the advice of local public health officials.

US Navy Reserve has apparently cancelled all drill periods through May 11th.

Meanwhile my employer won't let me work from home. Rumor on Friday was that a guy on our floor bought property from someone whose associate tested positive and who was feeling sick. The guy talked with a manager, and his manager talked with her manager immediately after, but we all finished our day as normal...

Editing to add my local power company just sent an email. No shutoffs, waived late payment fees, reconnecting those previously disconnected due to lack of payment.

The US will be in a complete Italy-style lockdown by next weekend. Nothing but grocery stores, pharmacies, and hospitals open. Calling it now.

Not sure about that, but I'm sure preparing for it (ever more than I already was before this whole thing got started, of course), and I'd recommend anyone who can to do the same.
