I imagine they genuinely are freaked out since they trust 90% of what the media says as fact.

Tried watching a little of the last Jon Oliver episode and gave up when he could even lie about a white house tweet about the first bit of snow of the year (there was a small sprinkling sighted that day so Jon's show was using this as an example of Trump's WH lying). Can only imagine how much misinformation the average infotainment program is putting out.

You have an assortment of people out there that believe every bit of fear mongering they can get their hands on and this is a time where the media is now learning how basic diseases like the flu work for the first time. Many didn't even realize tens of thousands of people die every year from the flu and are now imagining they can prevent an equivalent from ever getting out by crowding into grocery stores and CostCos across the nation to fight over toilet paper and hand sanitizers. It's like they believe if they can get all society to shut down for a couple weeks that they can end a disease.

Plus when you consider the resources available in places like the US, the risk from a disease like this isn't really that great, we're probably in a better position than most to handle a sudden increase in the number of sick. Which should be putting people's minds at ease, but instead we have people talking about it being an apocalypse because Trump maybe misspoke at a speech like happens to most presidents.

Kinda wonder how much it helps that some of the people panicking the most online or in the media are able to stay at home all day if they want, so they don't understand why society outside can't just shut down for a few weeks/months the way they fantasize it could so the disease can just end.
