As far as I know it refers to lesbians who have dysphoria but don't want to transition, so they use he/him pronouns to try and alleviate the dysphoria somewhat. Naturally this leads to stupid discourse on social media because people are even more bored than usual being cooped up for corona.

In the way back times, butches used he/him protectively ie, it was safer to coast by being perceived as a dude than be out as a lebian. Young twits who never actually experienced homophobia absorbed it into the gender bs and have no grasp of the actual context.

And exactly how would that work? If I made people call me "Mr. Moneybag" it would just exacerbate, not alleviate, my financial dysphoria.

Fuck if I know. It's a reasoning I've heard at some point, though as the other replies show there's multiple explanations out there, but I don't really get it myself.

I've known a few butch lesbians who have had security at places called on them for going into the wrong bathroom; at a certain point it's just easier to go use the men's if you look a certain way. Regular women were NOT comfortable with them in there.

If we are going on about characters, the dude pictured in the image isn't even gay. Felix was born as and identifies as a man, and is implied to have a crush on a woman. Its just one of those weird traps that dresses like a girl because the author wants a trap.
