Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

My aunt works at a skating place. It's closed for two weeks. She said it was dead in there for days. People cancelled birthday parties. My uncle delivers medical supplies and assembles and repairs wheelchairs and beds. He isn't allowed to take the oxygen tanks into the hospitals and nursing homes now. Security was posted outside the hospital when he was delivering breast pumps. If he has to deliver or repair heavy equipment he has to answer a questionaire about where he's been.

I need to buy things in a couple days once my respiratory virus lets me. I just want normal stuff in normal amounts.

The panic buying is insane. I hope it dies down soon.

Thanks to all the Doomers buying every loaf of bread in my area I had to make my own today. Shit takes 12 hours.

Yeah, but those 12 hrs smell awesome.

Also, now's the time to start mashing; with everyone either grilling and/or baking bread, nobody will be able to pinpoint the source of all those wonderful brewery smells.

Trump is having another press conference. Told people to stay home. School from home. Don't go out to restaurants or bars. Don't gather in groups larger than 10.

Apparently the EU is closing all its borders but can't find a good source for it.

The EU Commission will propose to member states a temporary ban on all non-essential travel from third countries into the EU for initially a period of 30-days due to coronavirus, commission president Ursula von der Leyen on Monday said. EU leaders, who will hold crisis talks on Tuesday, will have to agree on the measure. EU officials will be urging the UK and other non-member states to join.

So practical confirmation from the unions it's the right wing Junta de Andalucia telling doctors to stop all testing. No reason other than corruption and stupidity found. They're preparing full press notes so get the popcorn the political shitstorm is brewing.

Spain becomes 4th most coronavirus-infected nation, seizes all private health care

Spain became the fourth most coronavirus-infected nation in the world Monday, surpassing South Korea as the arc of contagion rises.

Spain recorded at least 7,753 cases Monday, marking a 34.7 percent jump from the 5,754 cases recorded Saturday and a 161 percent jump from the 2,965 cases Friday, according to the World Health Organization.

@EmuWarsVeteran You are well and truly fucked now son as the spanish are just fining people for breaking quarentine....a monetary fine. :story:

Also congrats on moving up on the list!

Followup to earlier post on US Stock Market:

GREAT NEWS EVERYONE!

The federal reserve has just dropped the interest rate that the gov't loans money to banks to 0/ZERO/ZED EH ARRRRR OHHH MY!

I'm going to refinance my mortgage. I can get a steal on this rate! I'll see if i can get a line of credit on some half million dollars so I can buy my McMansion next to Vanilla Ice.

Yeah I did tell you all they've literally quarantined EVERYONE. (Other than public servants and first need industries) getting out of home for shit other than first needs is now a fined offense. Started friday with that shitstorm of an alarm. 15 days it's gonna last counting since monday. Cops have been fining turists like crazy doe they don't give a shit. As for infections. It's not that bad. Over 60% are in madrid and most others in basque coubtry and catalonia. Shit's mostly contained at this point, hospitals have been getting steadily better. Now we'll have to see why the fuck the right wing's decided to shit the bed like this.

If only we had another, single word term for "sheltering in place" during a pandemic. Something latin-sounding that really gets the point across.

Ah well.

This needed to happen weeks ago. Makes me sick thinking about bad this is going to be.

It's impossible to know how long this is going to continue, but we can't afford to wait to take action. We need to take whatever actions are necessary to protect lives.

"Do you empathize? People are really scared."

What a stupid question to ask a germaphobe during a pandemic. Then again, she has an axe to grind.

Jigga what? Stop all testing? of sick and dying people? What in the name of sam fucking hell would cause that big brain thought to occur?!?!?

"Macron says EU to close all external borders for 30 days." Is Macaroni speaking on behalf of the EU or just suggesting this?
Well he and merkel have been in total control of the EU for years now, don't see why they'd hide it at this point.

I work for a small manufacturer in Milwaukee. The owner called and the receptionist said he's considering shutting down. The casino, however, is remaining open. I can't imagine the governor calling to close bars and nightclubs, we're a drinking culture after all. Many craft brewers are shuttered. The downtown building I worked in before I got this job had a confirmed case at one of the tenants, so over the weekend they disinfected it. There were a lot of sick employees there in January.
I am more than fine hunkering down. I'll get unemployment for being laid off and I have some money in the bank. We are fully stocked on staples and toiletries. It would be nice to have this cold, rainy week off to get comfy.

Early US Coronavirus cases are starting to recover.

This includes people in the 50 - 70 year old range. They were diagnosed 13 days ago, they have passed 2 tests since then (indicator of recovery.)

Question: has anyone heard about vaccine research involving people who have recovered? This has been absent from the news.

Damn that's rough. I'm glad you're prepared. How many cases are there in Milwaukee now? Does it seem panicked?

From the press conference: "It's nobody's fault ... unless you go to the source." Then he raises his eyebrows.

OOOOOOOOH SHIT are those fighting words? (I fully expect to be rated optimistic.)

In other news, my 73-year old mother (who has diabetes, congestive heart failure, and smoked for 20 years before she quit in her early 30s) decided to go to her doctor's office without a mask. I tried to convince her to put on the airtight goggles and p100 mask I had given her, but she refused on the basis that she would look goofy. You can lead a horse to water ...

We were betting on whether divorce rates or birthrates would skyrocket and it looks like divorce might win

People who can't stand being around each other have no business marrying in the first place. Goddamn.

Guess which county isn't on the lockdown list? I'll give you a hint: it contains over 1k infected and contaminated people in a shitty QZ.

11:24 a.m. Most of Bay Area placed on lockdown until April 7: Six Bay Area counties are expected to announce “shelter in place” orders for all residents on Monday, directing everyone to stay inside their homes and away from others as much as possible for the next three weeks as public health officials desperately try to curb the rapid spread of coronavirus across the region. The directive will begin at midnight Monday and involves San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Marin, Contra Costa and Alameda counties, officials told The Chronicle. The order is to stay in place until at least April 7. The orders fall just short of a full lockdown, and it wasn’t immediately clear how, or to what degree, they would be enforced.

Solano is the country that contains Travis AFB. Strange how it seems to be pointedly left wide open. It's almost like containment isn't actually the goal.

This seems to be matching what the UK's own health officers and scientists are saying. You can recover from it, or even have it relatively mild even if you're in the "at high danger" categories. The social distancing enacted here is to try and slow down the spread as the data suggests that's how Swine Flu managed to be slowed significantly. (Everyone was off for the school summer holidays).
