Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

At least the right are sincere with their selfishness. The greedy conservatives that can afford respirators and whatnot are fully aware that they aren't good people, they're just fortunate enough to be rich. The other brand of conservative that genuinely values tight-knit community and family are going to come out strongest out of all of us, since though the state will be overwhelmed, they have a system for helping people cope and recover thats proven to work since caveman times.

Meanwhile the 'urban elite' will designate the in-group (which includes themselves no matter what) which deserves all the sympathy and support, and designate the out-group (arbitrarily the old, the rural, and the white) which should be left to die.

How long before we see riots in the cities? If LA blacks kick off I'd say they're a whole heap more justified this time than they were in the 90s.
I'm just waiting to see which city blows up first because of this + the usual petty criminal dindunuffin bullshit.

It's going to get bad. Imperial College (basically, the UK's MIT... if there is a group of researchers who know data science and modelling and getting their maths right, it's them) released a report that has forced the government here to change their previous 'pint at the winchester while it blows over' strategy. Page 8.

Even following the new advice, intensive care facilities will be at capacity by the middle to late April (a month from now) with a peak in June of 8 times available capacity. That could mean that 7 out of every 8 patients presenting with a need for critical care will not have a bed.

We're building extra ventilators like crazy, and hotels are being approached to use as temporary hospitals. I think today, after reading this report, the government has finally woken up to how underprepared they are.

Tin foil hat time: Do I think the media is above causing mass hysteria to tank the economy because every other tactic they've used against Trump has failed? No, no I don't. People like Bill Maher have freely admitted that they've been cheering for a recession to happen; I don't doubt for a second that there's people in the media who are giddy about this right now.
I wouldn't doubt it, but the entire world is going full shutdown mania so it's hard to say exactly how much of it is specifically ploy #512 to "Take Trump down."

This is from a site for vegetarians

Protein is easy, sure. A diet of only rice and beans would leave you deficient in vitamins A, C, D, E, K, and B12.

B12 in particular is only found in supplement pills and animal products (meat, fish, dairy, and eggs). It isn't too important for prepping, though, since you can live off your body's stores of B12 for several months.

How will I know that I lost my job? will they email me or will I not find out until I realize I can't clock in and get through the security portals?
depends on how cyberpunk-compatible your state's laws are
if they actually tell you you're basically squaresville, daddy-o
out on the bleeding edge you get [ACCESS DENIED]

All the answers to your questions about the COVID-19 Coronavirus:

On March 16, 2020, the President of the Republic decided to take measures to minimize contact and travel. A containment system is in place throughout the territory from Tuesday, March 17 at 12:00 p.m., for a minimum of fifteen days. Travel is prohibited except in the following cases and only if you have a certificate for:

Move from home to work when telework is not possible;
Make essential purchases in authorized local shops;
Go to a health professional;
Travel for childcare or to help vulnerable people with the strict condition of respecting barrier gestures;
Exercise only on an individual basis, around the home and without any gathering.

The certificate necessary to circulate will be available on this page this Tuesday, March 17.

Violations of these rules will be punished with a fine ranging from 38 to 135 euros.

I don't know if this has made the rounds yet, but France is apparently entering complete lockdown.
Citizens will no longer be allowed to leave their homes without an authorization, with a decently hefty fine associated with non-compliance. Overall, pretty Dystopian.
The interesting part is that the english section of the website details no such thing. Had I not been told to directly translate the french version it would've slipped past me.
I'm wondering how many people will play ball, and if we're soon to see all-out riots.

Most will either call you or email. Just disabling your ability to clock in or access with no other notification is bad risk management. Unless its retail or burger flipping. Lots of exceptional idiots. Had one exceptional stick up the back end who in his efforts to replace everyone at the location with his previous stores staff just took me off the schedule and refused to answer any calls when it came my tern after over 6 years with the company. Within the year everyone was gone. Lucky me I had a recently gotten a second job and was able to go full time at the time.

For sure, I'm not vegetarian. I posted that to show rice and beans are good for you. I make a pot of Texas style chili once a month with lots of ground beef for the days I don't feel like cooking.

I'd be surprised if there weren't any riots. I can understand discouraging people from going outside but banning everyone from being outside with out your Super Special Hallpass Outside Certificate feels like government is overstepping their boundaries or something.

It's France, revolution is the one thing that they do.

I have the sneaking suspicion that we're going to see mass lockdown like this for many countries soon. If they don't co-ordinate and all lock down in relative quick succession I'd think it would be a bit futile because if everyone isn't doing it new cases will begin as soon as travelling starts up again.

I honestly don't know how the economy will survive but at the same time if the government has mandated an absolute stop what can you do really? If you have renters you could evict for lack of payment or power or water getting cut off you will cause mass riots. Anyone being that cold and callus during a crisis would likely be lynched for doing so, major corporations would be lambasted. Not to mention you know it's going to boom again after two+ months of controlled living, everyone will want to stretch their legs and buy the new shiny they haven't be able too.

This whole situation is completely bizarre.

Just in: first death in Mexico caused by coronavirus.
A 72 year old died after contracting it during a trip to Vail, Colorado, US. The man was a cousin of Carlos Slim, owner of a telecom company in Mexico and one of the richest men in the world.
At the moment there are 53 confirmed cases with 2 of them having serious complications and one death in Mexico.

UPDATE:
as of March 16, there aren’t any deaths in Mexico caused by coronavirus, the media reports about the death have been denied by the Secretary of health, however the man is in a critical condition. Current count is 82 cases confirmed.
I’m very ashamed of the media in this country, sorry guys.

Dunno if it came up in the dedicated shutdown thread but as far as I understand some states if not many are shutting down lucha shows, which may not be enough to stop deathmatch promotion Zona 23 from operating out of junkyards because they're literally an unlicensed outlaw promotion with shady connections resulting in the local authorities not shutting them down.
