That certainly doesn't help, but I think it's more than just that. We've become a culture obsessed with safety above all else. When I was a kid I could just hop on my bike and ride anywhere in town, totally unsupervised. All I had to do was tell my parents where I was going and when I thought I'd be back. Even in 1st and 2nd grade I'd walk to school by myself. Now in some places parents can get charged with child neglect for letting their kids walk to school by themselves. And the place I lived then wasn't exactly Mayberry. I'm not even that old. The 24-hour news cycle was already in full swing by the time I was born. I don't know exactly what caused the obsession with safety, and a sociologist could probably write a Ph.D. disseration on it, but I have to think the one-two punch of Columbine and 9/11 was a huge contributor.
