Wuhan Coronavirus: Lockdowns, Quarantines, Cancellations

Nevada Governor Sisolak ordered all non-essential businesses close for the next 30 days. Pretty much the same as other states: pharmacies, grocery stores, drug and convenience stores, banks and financial institutions, hardware stores, and gas stations are to remain open, but pretty much everything else is no-go.

On the bright side, at least I'm in the "still working" category, but on the down side...I'm in the "extremely likely to be infected" category. Either way, brutal for a state that took a really, really long time to recover from the last economic crisis.

Furry Weekend Atlanta has been canceled due to COVID-19 and a 30 day ban on public gatherings.

Finally, some cancellations I can appreciate.

Isn't this supposed to be the reporting of Lockdowns, Quarantines and Closures thread, not the sperging about the necessity of Lockdowns, Quarantines and Closures thread? Just use this thread to tell us who's shut down what and open a separate thread for all political discussions pertaining to the WuFlu fallout. It's getting so I have to sort through a lot of crap just to read the announcements.
Yeah how fucking dare people discuss something in a manner you deem superfluous

Aren't they protected by their fursuits and competing venereal diseases to be affected by the Wu Flu?

I haven't had to go into an office for a few years, and I've thankfully got a few months of work to keep me busy. Come noon tomorrow, shit here in Vegas is gonna get real interesting. It sucks, but I imagine that in 2 weeks time we'll see some stuff being allowed to reopen.

Got to see the lockdown of Newfoundland go through a leap in live time. This morning there was only 1 case on the Island (it's thought to actually be in Labrador) and the schools were supposed to have two more days with kids able to pick up their items. As soon as two more cases were confirmed by the public health within 15 minutes a memo was out that the previous plan was no longer happening and no one was accessing schools except for picking up required items - like medical equipment or medicines.

494 People have been tested in Newfoundland, 491 of them were negative. The two new cases are related to the first, very likely family. People are very stressed and many of them are turning to facebook to air out their grievances about people coming home and not quarantining, seeing a lot of posts of people saying call 811 to report people you know have come back but aren't self-isolating for the 14 days. That or the ones who have come back are on facebook talking about their decision too follow the precaution which is annoying as well but in a tolerable way because at least they had sense.

Alberta, BC, and Ontario all had case jumps today. The beginning of the peak for Canada?

Still seeing claims that a lot of cases are travel related. The problem is these people are probably tested once they arrive which still puts everyone whose been on planes with them at risk. Stop travelling. It ain't that hard. If they're doing flights from places where it's already bad then they should only be those people.

The fact that people really be out here proving they'd need to be legally mandated before they'll self quarantine has got me MOTI. That and they're also given mixed answers on if they need to or no, Newfoundland government really just flying by the seat of their pants and praying it doesn't get bad. Newfoundland has a very high population of elderly, many of which are the local doctors, if it starts spreading it'll be very bad.
Nova Scotia's up to seven cases now. Only time will tell just how many more will occur.

UK:-
Coronavirus: Police able to detain infected people under new emergency laws brought to parliament

Emergency legislation allowing police and immigration officials to temporarily detain people infected with coronavirus have been published by the government.

Matt Hancock, the health secretary, unveiled sweeping powers to bolster the UK's response to the outbreak, including powers for police and immigration officials to arrest and detain those who may cause a risk to public health.

The Emergency Coronavirus Bill, which will be brought to the Commons on Wednesday, also allows the home secretary to shut transport hubs in the event of border staff shortages and grants ministers powers to ban mass gatherings and close schools. [...]

No idea how the police are supposed to ID the plague carriers but oh well.

Got this in my student email yesterday:

At least some things aren't changing.
Pearson is shit. I'm stunned to hear they offer any kind of support for their shit products at all. They certainly don't support students. Their shit's so buggy that it once marked a test question "wrong" because the answer was "4", but I'd entered "4" instead. Not even kidding. They wouldn't believe me that it happened nor adjust the grade, either.

I hope their crappy platform collapses under the weight of the influx of students forced to switch to online-only classes, and I hope they crash & burn for it.

Well, they canceled Eurovison. What a shame...

It’s in the DNA of the Eurovision Song Contest to bring delegations, artists and fans together in one place and provide an equal platform for all artists to compete together on the same stage and the same opportunity to shine. We felt that under the extreme circumstances we face this year, organizing the Eurovision Song Contest in another way would not be in keeping with our values and the tradition of the event.

The unique format of the Song Contest as an international live event means that it is not possible to identify any realistic alternative. We therefore have no choice other than to cancel the show.

Not sure if this was mentioned but I'm including this for posterity:
Ohio cancelled the March 17 democratic primary. No news on rescheduling.

Additional note:
On March 17, NY State governor A. Cuomo held a press conference where he asserted that state-wide 'medical emergency shutdown powers' are reserved exclusively by the Office of the Governor. He added that he had no plans to shutter businesses in NY State.

In a reply, the NY City mayor's office disagreed with the NY Governor. Mayor de Blasio stated that medical emergency shutdown powers for NY city are allowed by his office.

personally, I have no idea who is right. Seems like a bit of a penis-measuring contest.

Because only one can be the Democratic nominee in 2024...

Whether Trump, Biden, or Bernie win, 2024 will be an open field for both parties because the latter two said they'd only do one term. Unless the incumbent VP is the presumptive nominee, both Cuomo and Diblasio can throw their hats in.

Everything they do around the pandemic is in service of that, hell everything Cuomo has done for the past 2 years has been making his case.

That's why he's grandstanding so hard against Trump, which is a shame because while I don't like him he has taken some good decisive steps with the virus. Of course if he bipartisanly worked with Trump...well we all know what happened to Chris Christie when he hugged Obama.

BP Oil Refinery decided that from last Friday onwards, if employees could work from home, then they should work from home. This basically cut around a quarter of the 600-700 daily workforce being on site. The refinery also noticed a large drop in fuel usage over the weekend, with airports grinding to a halt and a lot of traffic staying home rather than commuting to workplaces. For the next month at least, the refinery can be run on a skeleton crew if need be, just producing enough to keep it ticking over and not be shut down. This has helped with fuel prices dropping like a rock.

The BP Operators have now been sectioned off from the pleb contractors to 'minimise infection risk'. Complete areas have been taped off from the general workforce for the foreseeable future. Some see this as a new 'us versus them' issue.

Contractors meanwhile have had their workforce split into two shifts, alternating one week on, one week off, which is a bit of a bitch for the casual employees. The theory is, if one shift has infected, the other can step in to cover the void. There's areas of the refinery that, no joke, have danger tape splitting areas into two, and you can't cross the line without facing Health and Safety repercussions.

An oil refinery relies on it's PPE for the workforce obviously, and your basic run of the mill P100 masks are part of that, amongst many others. Today, the government has stepped in and demanded that ALL 3M P100 type masks be pulled from the PPE stores and handed over to them. They actually seized them. We knew it was coming, but still a shock when it happens, especially when you rely on that PPE.

Schools are still open, gatherings are limited to 100 indoors, 500 outdoors which has caused a lot of public backlash like other countries. 50 thousand dollar fines if you're caught outside of isolation. More to come as it happens.
