Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Oh shit it was OAN? Was wondering what typically sidelined news org would be able to sneak in those lines.

OAN cracks me up, to be honest. Now Fox is a more or less normal news organization it left a gap in the market for full-on right-wing crazies to set up a news network. As a right-wing crazy myself, that makes me happy.

Of course, there are assholes like landlords and some GOP politicians who are pissed because of “MUH GOVERNMENT OVERREACH” and “THINK ABOUT THE BANKS!!” It’s amazing how little compassion some people have. There are good landlords and businesses that don’t need a government order to stop them from throwing quarantined people onto the streets but there’s also a lot of assholes who totally would do that if they were allowed to.

The interesting thing about Trump is that he's National Populist, not a libertarian or a small-government conservative. If you expect him to stay true to libertarian/small-government principles you've completely missed the point that he doesn't care about that shit. Or know about it, quite probably.

The mask thing always seemed a bit bogus to me. If it's a virus which spreads via droplets in the air, can only enter via mucus membranes and survives on surfaces you can get it in these ways from someone outside your immediate family

1) Touch a surface with it on, touch your eyes or mouth.
2) Inhale a droplet.
3) Have a droplet land in your eye.

If you wash your hands regularly that takes care of 1). Having some sort of mask might stop 2). Sure you're still open to 3) but just because protection is imperfect it doesn't mean it's not worth doing. Humans inhale vast amounts of air and it seems like inhaling droplets is going to be a common way to get it.

It's also suspicious when glorified bloggers posing as journalists all suddenly start harping on 'masks don't work'. They may well all be basing their articles on a press release, and that press release may come from the government who are concerned about mask shortages inside the healthcare system. In which case the full story is something like 'Masks work but only if you're trained to use them. It makes sense to reserve them for healthcare workers'. Which is not quite the same as 'Masks don't work'. However, I can't find any data on coronavirus infection vectors. Assuming you wash your hands a shitload like everyone does is 2) much more common than 3)?
The expert on the Rogan podcast last week (this week? fuck me time has gone all bendy) said that airborne aerosol transmission was the primary way it's spreading. His sentiment was mostly "yeah wash your hands but that's not gonna stop it." and he went on to say N95+ masks were very effective. Definitely got me pulling out my respirators. I've got an "essential infrastructure" job so now I'm wondering if working all day in my P100 respirator would be easier or harder than working in a disposable N95.
Also let's take a moment to consider someone in the White House called it the Wu Flu.

Okay....who here works in the White House
I heard someone called it Kung Flu which is even better imo.

I can't see how this could possibly end in disaster.

I’m very proud of my state and my governor for halting all evictions and foreclosures until at least May. So many people are facing either no or diminished income because of the pandemic; throwing people out of their homes during an international crisis beyond their control is just inexcusable and disgusting. Not to mention dangerous.

Of course, there are assholes like landlords and some GOP politicians who are pissed because of “MUH GOVERNMENT OVERREACH” and “THINK ABOUT THE BANKS!!” It’s amazing how little compassion some people have. That being said, there's not exactly a lack of basis when it comes to concern about the Federal Government flexing its muscles. I'm as much a fan of helping people as the next person, but I also have a tendency to get skeeved out when the government says, "We need to take drastic, extreme measures! But only for a bit. We promise." The Patriot Act wasn't marketed a permanent deal either, nor was having to practically get strip-searched every time I want to board a plane, and yet here we are.

When the Federal Government hammers something through the gates, they never go back to close them afterwards. I may be super big-time keen on Trump, but I also can't help but notice that the Defense Production Act that he's citing to take broad, sweeping actions was something that was put in place in 1950 during the Cold War, and the Government never went back to shut that door again.

Granted, I think that this situation absolutely calls for fairly extreme measures to help slam this T-Bird of a country over the obstacle in its path, but I'm not going to help them smash the pedal to the floor without voicing some fairly substantial concerns about giving people in Washington even more power in the process, especially whilst half of them are bitching about stupid shit like virus names being racist. Politicians love exploiting fear to amass more political power, and that's something people should be paying very, very close attention to.

The property will be completely destroyed within 2 weeks.

So taking your T-bird analogy a step further, you are the shrieking female in this "jump the bridge" analogy. Not happy with the situation but completely powerless to stop it or come up with an alternative. Tbh I am probably the body in the trunk for this analogy. Dont know what is going on and just want it over.

Someone really needs to make a .gif of this with Trump as the driver

Trump tried to get North Korea to bite and become a war, didn't work. He tried it with Iran, didn't work. So he tried to crush China economically and it really didn't work (trade imbalance grew; not shrunk with Trump).

Finally a virus. And all he had to do was nothing so it became a national emergency and he could then play savior.

This one is going to get away from him though. Don't know if anyone has been watching the USD versus every other currency, but essentially it is inflating. At an alarming rate.

This means US Exports have become too expensive to export. It means corporate profits coming into the US once converted are worth far less than before. It also means all those foreign countries (like China, Saudi) that hold treasuries have had their values inflated and earned hundreds of billions. Not only are they now worth more, but the yields they are paying are locked and are paying far more than what anyone else can now get - so they are worth even more AFTER calculating inflation that is taking place.

And it also means we are giving a real reason for other countries to abandon the USD as the reserve currency, and while every other currency required Foreign Reserves, we never did because we had the USD. There is horror on the horizon folks, and this administration won't be able to talk its way out.

Again, to harp, we were warned about printing forever in the US, and when the Fed tried to unwind the balance sheet, Trump simply spent more and lowered revenues (taxes), against the advice of virtually...everyone. The US is in a world of shit, more so than other countries.

We note the greats of history are the strongest just before they fall - like stock markets and currencies.
China was cutting treasury holdings before this. Saud is losing capital rapidly as Aramco vaporizes. Printing dollars causes inflation which *weakens* the currency, makes exports *cheaper*, and lowers the cost of outstanding debt by providing more dollars to pay it with. Almost every country in the world has a weak currency strategy now; if the US did not inflate, people would hoard dollars and treasuries and we would see more of the effects you detail.

If the US government stopped printing panic dollars, would you rather have treasuries or gold? You’d better believe that if the US stopped inflating at the same rate as the rest of the world (and even NZ is cutting interest below us, to 0.1%), it would be a strong-dollar globalist coup, and we’d start denuding the globe of its resources in exchange for our rare and valuable green president faces.

Update: China Uncensored.
Corona Virus: How China Spun Criticism into "Racism".

MY Take? After 20+ years with dealings in the Pacific Rim, after awhile you get to deal with the same patterns of abuse certain countries throw out to the world you become numb to the situation. This is typical Chinese Propaganda. They sell this to the sheeple inside China as well as abroad. You just get used to this crap after awhile.

Just remember...
China LIES....
China STEALS...
China EATS EVERYTHING...

Xi and the CC
At the press conference today an OAN journo asked Trump about the elephant in the room: the fifth columnists taking marching orders from the CCP and their efforts at deflection to label the Chinese Virus racist.

ChiComs BTFO

The CCP has lost the propaganda war on this, and in general. In time, they are going to lose much more.

@NyQuilninja - No need to get worked up over backfad. Just put him/her/it on ignore. I have done so.

Reporting from argentina:
Boss came in, told me and others it was pointless to be here and go home, he doesn't even expect us to be working remotely since our tasks aren't critical. Will get a call on the 31 about how to proceed from there but there are rumours about quarentine extending until april 15th.
Now we don't have THAT many confirmed cases and this is making people distrustful
"Why are we shutting everything down over so few cases?"
You might argue that it is for prevention but our government tends to be corrupt and inept, so people believe the government has the actual numbers and is basing their decision making on that. I should also mention only one institute has test kits and they refuse to share them with private ones, said institute is falling apart and the head is a buttbuddy of the current ruling party. So yes, rumours keep flying, people are scared.

On tuesday I overheard two employees from the local mall talking about a protest to get the mall closed. Two of the biggest malls in the province were closed by then, two days after the local mall will be closing.

Exceptional individuals continue to break quarentine, are promptly arrested and fined. Might update with the articles later.

Edit: I kept hearing how corona-chan is a US bioweapon which was released in china and went out of control. After reading the thread I want to say I understand why is that the case but sadly they aren't chinese lapdogs and they so it for free, see blaming USA/CIA for anything bad happening is commong amongst lefties. Glad I get to stay home so I don't get to hear these dumb theories like these or how "all animals and plants produce toxins, the earth is trying to purge us"

Alright Kiwis listen up. I don't usually post on this forum and only signed up to talk shit about Star Wars so spreading fear mongering and nonsense is the last of my prioritized shit.

Got news from governor's office in an undisclosed state. Been told national lockdown is happening by the end of this week in the United States. National Guard is rolling out everywhere and they're preparing the state militias. Interstate travel will be banned.

Oh boy, return of the Star Wars shitposters to A/H. Though hey, this could be right.

Here's an interesting study on another Coronavirus

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2999318

The survival of airborne human coronavirus 229E (HCV/229E) was studied under different conditions of temperature (20 +/- 1 degree C and 6 +/- 1 degree C) and low (30 +/- 5%), medium (50 +/- 5%) or high (80 +/- 5%) relative humidities (RH). At 20 +/- 1 degree C, aerosolized HCV/229E was found to survive best at 50% RH with a half-life of 67.33 +/- 8.24 h while at 30% RH the virus half-life was 26.76 +/- 6.21 h. At 50% RH nearly 20% infectious virus was still detectable at 6 days. High RH at 20 +/- 1 degree C, on the other hand, was found to be the least favourable to the survival of aerosolized virus and under these conditions the virus half-life was only about 3 h; no virus could be detected after 24 h in aerosol. At 6 +/- 1 degree C, in either 50% or 30% RH conditions, the survival of HCV/229E was significantly enhanced, with the decay pattern essentially similar to that seen at 20 +/- 1 degree C. At low temperature and high RH (80%), however, the survival pattern was completely reversed, with the HCV/229E half-life increasing to 86.01 +/- 5.28 h, nearly 30 times that found at 20 +/- 1 degree C and high RH. Although optimal survival at 6 degree C still occurred at 50% RH, the pronounced stabilizing effect of low temperature on the survival of HCV/229E at high RH indicates that the role of the environment on the survival of viruses in air may be more complex and significant than previously thought.

That's aggressively hard to read because of all the confidence intervals which I don't care about and switching between percentage humidities and 'high/medium/low', but it seems like

20 degrees C. 67h half-life at 50% humidity, 26h at 30%, only 3h at 80%
6 degree C. 30% or 50% same as 20 degrees C. 86h at 80%

So you're better off with cold and dry weather or warm and humid. It's probably that warm humid weather that kills of winter flu. Ultraviolent light probably isn't all that good for you if you're a virus in a water droplet too

https://www.accuweather.com/en/heal...re-may-limit-spread-of-new-coronavirus/703393

“It really doesn’t have anything to do with the warmth, but it has to do with the length of the day and the exposure to sunlight, which inactivates the virus through UV light," Fair said. "We expect a dip in infections as we would see with the cold and flu in the spring and summer months.

Saying 'it has nothing to do with the warmth' seems to be overstating things - a drop in the viral half-life from 86h to 3h should affect R, the reproductive number.

Also if it behaves like influenza the Northern Hemisphere has a 'flu season' for a reason and if coronavirus works like influenza or rhinovirus we should see a drop-off.

And here's the video demonstrating that epic question and the appropriate response. What a bad-ass.

It's weird how that guy in front of her doesn't seem to register that she's implying he's a traitor.

This would be more believable if they just said the Guard was rolling out, because the National Guard is the state militia. And they're already activated and on the ground and have been for a least a week or two already.

If I had to rate this post on a 1-10 basis, gets a 4, and is late and 🏳️‍🌈
