So it seems like all my boomer relatives are settling in for self-quarantine.. after traveling all over the country the past couple of weeks and coming back to stay with my 90+ y/o grandma. This is not looking good.

Alright Kiwis listen up. I don't usually post on this forum and only signed up to talk shit about Star Wars so spreading fear mongering and nonsense is the last of my prioritized shit.

Got news from governor's office in an undisclosed state. Been told national lockdown is happening by the end of this week in the United States. National Guard is rolling out everywhere and they're preparing the state militias. Interstate travel will be banned.
People scoffed but I can actually see this happening. Everything has been escalating to stricter and stricter measures in a very short timespan. Everybody would have laughed a month ago if you said Canada and the US would mutually agree to close the border.
Banning domestic flight is the first step. I dunno if I believe that national guard stuff but shutting down travel in general, sure.

People aren't going to react well to finding out grandma's gonna die and no you can't go see her. But I think that's where we are going.

One more thing to note; the 56% percentage of California numbers came out before the social distancing order went through. A lot more people are indoors now.
Which is why Gavin Newsom was talking about the homeless getting sick and flooding hospitals. Where are the homeless going to be housed? It'll cause a problem.

He was talking about the half the homeless population getting sick and flooding the hospitals.

CNN fucked up the story and didn't include the homeless mention.

not just CNN, ABC News, LA Times, and a dozen other places.got peoples hopes up

I agree they should just house them in some bigger area. I was going to say that I can't believe that the media hyped that story up and wasn't clear on what Newsom was talking about, but I'm not even surprised at this point. Of course people are going to read those stories and panic more, so thanks, CNN and mainstream media.

I feel for the people that actually live in the Hamptons, the ones living there year-round. The wealthy fled there and descended upon the place like locusts. If it gets any worse that's where we'd see looters for sure.

The Hamptons are kinda weird. Most of the people living there year round tend to be small town folk, but I can't feel too bad for 'em since most of them tend to make crazy money from all the rich goobers during tourist season. Never have I ever seen more Ferraris and Maseratis casually parked next to each other than in the Hamptons next all these little boutiques and gourmet mini markets. Obviously the cars belonged to all the rich yuppies, but even the retail workers 'round dem parts looked at me like I was diseased. Never really had that problem in Manhattan.
Warren blurs out Chinese, Twitter troll helps her out by fixing it.

EYES STITCHED SHUT!? What the fuck kind racist dog whistle politics is Pocahontas playing at here? This is NOT acceptable!

Maybe the government is a bunch of boomers who get their news from reading headlines, and all the mainstream headlines spell out the words "You can panic now!".

It's very easy for the US government to figure out how bad things really are in China. They just got to turn all those satellites from watching air bases to watching hospitals. I think by this point they do know how bad it could be. Italy is a definite storm warning. Their hospital system is starting to fail even under draconian lockdown measures and the infection rate continues to climb.

You can bet the aftermath of this is going to be fun when all the classified info is finally leaked or released.

That money has to last all year and LI is expensive. I didn't know there weren't any big box stores or Amazon/Fresh Direct deliveries there.

Maybe now they'll understand why having a bunch of crazy, drug and drink addled hobos living on the street leaving human poo and used needles lying around is a bad thing.

Because holy shit this essentially means the US Government is about to nationalize the economy. We've not done this since World War 2.

Somewhat related to that, Ford and General Motors are considering making ventilators, à la the Arsenal of Democracy.

More tangentially, Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) is allowing distilleries to make hand sanitizer without a permit.

Senate Republicans have unveiled their relief plan for dealing with this mess.

Cash payment of 1,200 dollars per person
500 dollars for dependent children
Full stop delay of all tax payment for the 2019 tax year until October of 2020 with no penalties.

A non-interest loan to all companies under 500 employees up to 10 million dollars

Now here is the big one. The Government will also offer to buy stock options in all businesses up to 425,000 dollars. To include private small businesses. In return, the US Government will be entitled to a share of future profits in the businesses commensurate to its stock stake in the companies for the next 2 years or until the buy in is fully discharged. Basically you can sell stake in your small business to Uncle Sugar for the next 2 years, and after those 2 years you can buy back the difference in the stock if Uncle Sugar has not made back in full what was given.

And assorted cash payouts to hard hit industries like the airlines.

Total appropriation is 1 trillion dollars.

Lockdown for not even a month and we're talking fucking trillions of dollars in aid. How many zeros are we talking by may?

Spouse decided that despite this being a week of annual leave, he absolutely had to go into work (NHS, frontline) “to rally the troops‘ morale, to make sure I and not my director am seen as the leader in this crisis, to burnish my leadership credentials”

Twat. This afternoon, eldest toddler who I have carefully been socially distancing for three weeks now spiked a 39 deg fever. We all get tested tomorrow.

Add to the list of known risks for infection, ‘living with a cunt with a hero complex’.

Mad on the Internet because my little ones are sick and the rational part of my brain is being drowned out by animalistic dread.

Jesus. What a fuck stick.

I live across the street from a basketball court and a tennis court.

Today, the basketball court was flooded with teenagers. Earlier this week, I only saw like, two kids at a time on the basketball court (and those kids all looked related--so I'm assuming they all live together too). Today is the first day of Spring, and it certainly felt like it ... I don't think I've ever seen the basketball court that crowded before.

Fucking hell, man. So much for social distancing in my county.

I also just want to point out, and I've been meaning to say this for awhile, that while everybody is sperging about Chinese people eating bats and how they're dirty and they suck, it was CHINESE PEOPLE in WUHAN who were very early on posting videos warning the WORLD about what was really going on there, at great risk to themselves. I know nothing will stop racist kiwi shitposters so I almost never even try, but some people really need to calm down.

They're from the government, and they're here to help. I'm scared.

In theory, a Huge chunk of this is paid for by making any business that signs up for emergency assistance uncle sugars bitch. The loans would have to be repaid with (small) interest, and the more extreme stock buying program would mean Uncle Sugar is now a co-owner of every corner coffee shop slinging fair trade organically sourced stuff at 5 dollars a cup.

About 400 billion of it is completely gone though, in the form of direct cash bailouts. Give or take. If the economy really recovers though, the stock buy in small businesses could actually turn a profit.

The doctor who has been memeing this up was on the radio today promoting chloroquinine as essentially safe; this is fake news and a lie. It might work, I have some skepticism, but it's not quite a drug you prescribe casually. It's not hardcore terribly dangerous, but they were talking as if it's something far more, let's say, "casual", that it actually is. They even said it doesn't interact with stuff which is a lie from the pit of hell, it fairly notoriously does. Googling "chloroquine interactions" and "chloroquine side effects" will inform anybody about that.

It's fine when used by a doctor in a hospital for treatment of COVID-19. Most of the side effects associated with it are related to long-term use. It does have a very low therapeutic index though, in that there's not much difference between the therapeutic dose and the lethal dose.

The preppers stockpiling it, well, natural selection will take its course if they can't figure out the dosage.
