I think it would be more productive to remember that CNN's exact line was "Trump peddles unsubstantiated hope in dark times." The keyword there is "unsubstantiated" because there's absolutely substance behind this in the form of multiple studies. They aren't fully-fleshed clinical trials and there's not a definitive behind the suggestion yet, but that one word completely changes the trajectory of their headline from what could have been a mostly reasonable complaint into one that's teetering dangerously on becoming an outright lie.
Trump wasn't pulling that medication or the combination of the two out of his ass, nor was it even his idea to begin with. There was a documented assumption behind examining those two medications as a response to the outbreak. Whether or not that's a 'false hope' depends on the direction of the trials, but my contention is squatting entirely on their use of "unsubstantiated" rather than any other part of their headline.
Why are you making this out to be some sort of media conspiracy? Dr. Fauci flat out said there is no proof it works at the coronavirus press conferences. You seem like the type to post on r/theDonald.
