I turned on the news earlier this evening because (a) I apparently hate myself, and (b) I wanted to see what the shills are saying about it. Their reactions? Well ... They're not good. Trust me, they've done the mental gymnastics to try to justify it, but they know that their actions today are really bad optics for the average voter.

In my highly personal opinion that what hopefully most governments will take away from this that you cannot let the "invisible hand of the market" and the private sector guide your country in every regard, as attractive as it might look like. Most of the western health systems that are hit hardest by this were cannibalized for years by corporate interests, frugal governments balancing books first and asking feasibility questions later and running the systems as businesses that turn a profit, not as one of the basic services that exists for the common good of society where profit comes second, as in my opinion it should be. And this is not only idealistic feel-good thinking, it's also quite pragmatic - all the money that might've been saved by trimming all those systems is certainly gone now.

In a situation like this, the entire mission and function of a government (no matter if they had your vote or not) is to provide for and protect all it's citizens to it's best ability. You can and should expect that service even if you hate the guy. Else they're just a bunch of people that take away part of your money each year. What we can be happy about is that this virus while dangerous enough is even with how little is known by now definitively not the big one and there will be an afterwards. I feel this will affect societies in ways we cannot even tell now and I have the slight hope that for the next pandemic that will come, preperations will be better and our current response will be seen as poorly informed, uncoordinated and unrefined. What I noticed in my government and other european governments is that the populist voices that in the last few years always were quick to promise nebolous quick solutions as opposed to the slow and inefficient ones of the current government in power were awkwardly silent on matters of solving things while the "too big", bad government churned out ways to manage this at a neckbreaking rate.

In other hopefully good news, many german and other hospitals in the world experiment with combinations of antiviral medications off-label on patients, coordinate with each other and record their findings in studies. If we could find something that weakens the progression of this virus, this could save a lot of people's lives. There's even talks about possibly having a vaccine ready by this year in autumn. Some research sees financial injections right now in porportions it probably hasn't seen in decades, if ever. We'll probably take some unrelated knowledge away from it too, as it often is with such things.

We've known for a long time that kids can test positive for it, though. Not new news at all.

Aside from some unfortunate outliers, the vast majority of the kids who test positive don't experience any noteworthy or serious symptoms. A lot of them act as carriers of the virus, which is part of the reason why this thing is so damn contageous.

so moving the topic off politics what's the deal with pets? can they get sick with the virus or not? so far there's only 2 cases of dogs being diagnosed positive with the virus, the first one being a "weak-positive" whatever the fuck that means and then later after coming out of quarantine being tested again and showing as negative so who knows if it was a false positive to begin with and now another dog has gotten a positive test. it seems weird that only 2 dogs have gotten infected after months of the disease ravaging the globe and over 100k tests being done, you would think more than 2 cases would have been found so my hope really is that they were just false positives.

But basically, if they are giving out the money now, on my husband's income (and many, many, many like us) we would get a fraction of the 1200. Then, being that he works in a specialized field, in infrastructure-related tasks (thats all i am going to say) and this drags on for weeks and weeks, what good is that fraction of 1200 going to do us when and if he loses his job?

Would this be for any reason other than he makes more than the income limit?

There is probably more money coming for people in this kind of situation. I wouldn't assume it's the last relief bill. It's just that the money is needed NOW, and the primary purpose is probably to reduce some uncertainty for people while the government sorts through the giant mess they've been handed and figures out what else they can do.

FWIW I wouldn't get much money from the proposed bill either, but I still think it's better for it to happen urgently to reduce panic, give people some hope and give the government some time to figure out what's next.
