Not only is the U.S. not experiencing a shortage of respirators, but the FDA approved the conversion of respirators typically used as anesthesiologists' respirators into ones purposed for general use in oxygenating patients with the Kung Flu. We don't currently have a shortage and we're making more anyways. 3M also doubled their production of N95 masks two months ago on January 20th at Trump's request.

I think that folks are missing my point. Mentally unstable people who are in pain and afraid in the ER or anywhere where they can not gain access to a resource, can trigger rioting.

I'm somewhere in the middle myself, it's important to take this seriously in my opinion as it's not some cold but it's also important not to refresh the news and twitter every five minutes and freak out at the screen at people who think otherwise. There's one problem with this virus right now and that problem is that the data collected is a bit all over the place. China lying their asses off for whatever nefarious reasons and presenting the west numbers that were convenient to believe didn't exactly help. The hard hit countries like Italy are only testing the very sick anymore.This makes the virus look incredibly aggressive and deadly although it's likely that it's magnitutes of times more spread in Italy and that most people have few symptoms and will never see a doctor, including some very old people in fact. We know this because of the exponential growth this virus presents and for the fact that wide parts of China aren't just a single big mass-grave at this point.

Germany has tons of capacity for lab testing and even the possibility to do things like gear vet labs towards this testing. The most accurate testing we have right now is coming from there because Germany made a very serious attempt in containing the first spreads of the virus with rigorous testing and quarantine and also had the infrastructure to back that attempt up. Germanys numbers while still probably wildly inaccurate are closer to the actual deadliness of this thing than the numbers of those countries that just started to even think about testing when the first dozens of people died and the beds were already filling.

Make no mistake. If no measures are taken it is of my opinion too that it could get out of hand quickly, especially considering the skeletal, for-profit state of medical resources in many western countries. No, it will not affect all parts of the population like the economic hit will, still if you don't want to live like in a complete amoral bugmen society like china, that effect on the population still needs to be attempted to be contained at all costs and I find it honestly pretty shocking that not all people seem to think so and that this even needs to be said. Maybe I'm just not young and edgy enough.

I can only repeat myself, this is bad yes, and it will change the world noticeably and will be talked about in years to come, yes. It still isn't the end of the world. Alone here in Germany we already had two epidemics (I know of) where many of the old people of now were still young and tens of thousands of people died in the end in-country and millions worldwide. Google them yourself. Didn't end the world either. Our brains are simply not very good with these big numbers and really feeling what they mean. You always have to see what they're relative to. For example, there's a good chance the city you're living in, (or the next big city) could literally have 10.000 people disappear overnight and nobody would even notice all that quickly. There's a scale involved here that's hard to grasp for the human brain.

also that's a lie, I mentioned where the fucking bullshit came from, right now triage has only been sometimes temporarily implemented for extreme cases where it was practically impossible to save, and only before the campaign hospitals started popping up, it's not like that anymore. I have an advanced degree so you should listen to me: The best and proven way to fight an outbreak is to quarantine and test everyone. Then you quarantine/treat the infected and trace their contacts, test and quarantine/treat them and so on. This is what South Korea did and that's why they're not fucked. Same in Japan.
