Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Sorry if ideas have already been thrown out but what's Pelosi's play with this bill? She knows there's no way in hell it's getting 60 votes. I originally thought it would boost what the republican bill had already suggested to push them more left (Bernie's suggested $2000 checks, more unemployment benefits/expanded student loan forgiveness, etc) but it's full of unrelated shit.
If her goal was to boost benefits/public perception she would have stripped down the republican bill to everything that explicitly benefited workers and dared the Republicans to vote against it but this is basically the opposite.

It's either one of two things

1. She's blackmailing the GOP into giving her some measure of flesh
2. She's hoping the GOP tells her to fuck off so she can run to the media and go "look, they told me to fuck off!"

Either option isn't fucking good.

Remember that the DNC had a deal worked out where if they had some sort of irregularities in votes -- like say, finding them in the trunk of a car -- the GOP wouldn't be allowed to take that shit to the courts. That deal ended in... 2018? 2019?

How many times do you know of saw the DNC finding magic votes that just happened to swing a state towards them that was going red? Florida in particular, it happened all the time down there with that one fat smug dindu woman.

They'll do ANYTHING to get that agreement back in place... and apparently it's on page 8 (section 8? area 8?) of Pelosi's proposed COVID bailout + pork bill.

Had my first class via videoconference this morning and was sitting there for a good 45 seconds before I realized that this was clearly visible behind me.

How's your day going?
Oh No

He's a weeb

So, last night and today my temp hasn’t dropped below 38, I haven‘t smelt a damn thing short of a soiled nappy in several days, am barely awake, and today I have randomly fainted twice.

uh oh kiwi bros

(also please blame my fever for my autistic recent posting, sorry)

the best line in this is ‘
But for the moment, with only one case of COVID-19 detected in Gabon, bushmeat lovers are not discouraged.
"We'd been told about monkey, which would give Ebola, and yet we kept eating it and never got that," says Melanie.”

This bit made me rage a bit.

Used in Chinese medicine, the scales are sold at a steep price to illegal dealers in China, says Luc Mathot, director of the NGO Conservation Justice.

At "$1,000 a kilogramme, more or less like ivory," he calls the price "ridiculous" since the scales "are made of keratin, like in fingernails".

The high price has been a boon to central African hunters, who consider the pangolin "the cherry on the cake" when they go off to target other game, says Pauline Grentzinger, a veterinarian from the Lekedi national park.

She says that pangolins "are not very shy".

"When they see you, they roll into a ball, you just have to bend down to pick them up..."

But she emphasises the importance of protecting the vulnerable animal.

"It's a species not very related to other species and which, besides representing unique aspects of evolution, is the only mammal covered in scales!"

So they're basically defenseless around humans and their scales are keratin which is objectively of no use to us but because some plutocratic fuck in China will pay $1000 a kilo for them they're being scooped up and exterminated and will probably go extinct.

I hope someone sequences their DNA should we need to genetically engineer humans to be more or less scaly in the future. A scaly hide would be very useful if the future turns out to be like Warhammer 40K.

I left the house for the first time in 19 days to drop a new cat off at the vet's for desperately-needed dental surgery. They now strictly limit how many clients can come inside the building, and under what circumstances, so I handed the cat off to the receptionist in the parking lot while maintaining social distance, and she filled out the surgery paperwork and noted my consent so I didn't have to sign anything. This afternoon, before I go pick him up, I'll call them and pay by giving my credit card number over the phone.

I called them last week, told them I'd more than likely been infected, and we agreed to a couple of additional sanitary precautions (spraying down the cat carrier with the veterinary disinfectant I use, leaving it outside to air-dry overnight, taking the cat outside to put him in the carrier, and either wearing gloves or using a clean towel to handle the carrier). I'm a frequent flyer there, so I think they felt confident in my ability to actually take those measures; I'm not sure what they would have done with a typical client.

They aren't taking new clients or scheduling regular check-up exams right now; if you need prescriptions filled or to purchase special diets, you have to call in the order for pick-up and they bring it out to you. And if you do schedule an appointment for a sick cat, only one of the owners is allowed to be present.

I drove by a Costco on the way home, and the lot was already half-full at 8:00 AM, even though they don't open until 10:00. But the two safeways and the grocery outlet store only had a handful of cars in each lot. What the fuck is the obsession with Costco? They're out of stock on so much stuff right now; why even bother?

Fuck big box stores man, that's where all the panicking cows trample. I hit up a small local butcher and another "meat market" that sells everything from beer to gummi worms and both were empty of people but stocked at 100%. Meanwhile, if I hit up the local version of Kroger, no matter the time it's packed with morons. FFS I saw someone openly eating a bag of nuts the other day while touching all sorts of shit on the shelves.

Side note, hope your kitty is doin gucci.

They are absolutely defenceless, honestly. Imagine a big hedgehog in armour plate. They are a hairs breadth from going out completely. They hide from... everything, eat ants and burrow big holes to hide in. They are completely harmless and quite simply incapable of protecting themselves from wicked bastards eating them into extinction.

If we have to pick between the Pangolins and the entire nation of China, well, I'm just saying it wouldn't be a good time to be a chink.

who the fuck would eat that? disgusting..

also, how long before being an activist for preventing the consumption of pangolins is considered racist?

So got of the phone with the mortgage company, i get 3 months of forbearance and then at the end "we ll" create a plan to get me back on track. hahahahaha. I was already working on how to pay that debt off but this pandemic threw a wrench into the plan. Short of the long of it. I am gonna be a whole lot poorer but I will survive this.

Also a fucking mortgage servicing company is already providing relief whille the fucks in DC cant just give people ether a check or fuck give them some gift cards or vouchers to pay their bills for a month so everyone will just chill and shit.

No bank survives if their foreclosures enter the 15%-20% range.
They don't want the giant headache of real property, they want interest and principle.

The elderly in my area are beyond stubborn so they didn't take the heads up to stock up (whether it's due to the virus or people's reactions). Now that there's community spreading in my area they're finally taking it more seriously and trying to get supplies when the shelves are mostly picked clean. It's sad to see but it's not like we didn't try to warn them.
That aside, people are still panic buying in my area. You can still get food but most of the staples are gone and there's still no TP/hand sanitizer (or potatoes :( ) to be seen.
A relative in Idaho was so involved with her ailing son she had no conception this was going on until a week ago. I blame her medical people for not telling her her son was comprimised and at least advising her to get masks for his medical visits. Now she's faced with no masks and iffy supply of meds for him. As it stands, I gotta send a couple of the six total 95m's I grabbed at Freddies back when this was fun. This shit is fucksd

So, yesterday US deaths hit 140 a day and global deaths hit 1873 a day.
These numbers are significant because daily flu deaths in the US are around 128 a day, and global flu deaths are around an estimated 1781 a day. So, if you're comparing apples to apples, in the space of just over 3 weeks since the first US COVID-19 death, it's beating a virus that came over on the Mayflower on a day to day basis, and beating the same possibly 2000+ year old Flu on the global stage despite being in the early days of the outbreak, with the peak likely still weeks away at the earliest.
Also, those global daily figures were worked out at the upper estimate for global flu deaths of around 650,000. The lower estimate of 296,000 a year would work out at 811 a day, which we passed some time ago.

I'm actually increasingly confident the measures being taken will stop the outbreak from spiralling into a complete catastrophe, but we have to actually stick with them for a time for them to work.

The fault in your logic is assuming a disease grows stronger the more people have been exposed to it. Everyone who compares this to Plague Inc are mongoloids. The flus are less lethal and contagious because we have a large amount of the population is already immune. Covid 19 is new, there is no immunity, and it seems to be rather contagious (probably because it's often so asymptomatic). A better comparison would be H1N1(off the top of my head, 60 million infected, 250k hospitalized,11k deaths) but even that'll be hard to compare cause we almost completely ignored that. Spanish Flu would possibly be the most apt, but medical technology was so far behind it's probably also irrelevant.

Just bring them to the US and create new population centers here. WHATS THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPUHN

For you yanks reading this, the common pronunciation around those parts is Awl-binny.
I gotcha, in Illinois we has VI-enna, Ay-thens with a long A and "berlin" that has no emphasis what so ever and is a homophone for 'berling' which is what you do to a potroast. My feeling is why did you appropriate from latin and classic literature just to fuck it up out of city pride. At that point, just go with 'Fungus Junction" or " Cowpatty", it's far more honest.

they convert to Mormonism and every doorstep in the US is visited by two small cheerful pangolins in black suits with their scales carefully slicked down bringing the teachings of Joseph Smith
