Thinking on it... I think I understand what is going on here.

This was THE Do or Die moment for Trump, this was THE turning point. They know everything they have been throwing was crap, but here was a natural disaster, something that could be Trump's Katrina that could actually unseat him come the general election.

And not only did he pass, but the machinations and wishful thinking caught up to them.

They have now realized, in a single horrifying moment, that they are fucked. The election is lost, and it is likely they will not see serious power for a decade to come. And now all they can do is scream at the world.
