Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

This article just started making the rounds through the chats and I can't stop laughing

Quick english summary: corona beer's economically getting hit because USA stopped buying it, someone made a poll, turns out amongst usual buyers only 4% stopped buying it but 14% stopped taking it in public and 40% of beer afficionados says they'd never try it now with 16% saying they think it has something to do with the virus.

It also links to a recopilation of spanish tweets, chirigotas and memes about the virus, including some madlad that made a tweeter called coronavirus and is having the time of his life. Won't translate those though, I still haven't translated my backlog. Any spanish speakers feel free to do your part.

The $2 Trillion relief package has finally been approved on.

Anyone want to take a bet on what shenanigans are part of this deal?
TrumpSayingWrong.gif

House didn't approve that deal, it's just a Senate version.

Wife is recovering. No O2 and is now slowly moving around and getting cranky, which is a good thing.
Very glad to hear it!
I think your mid level estimate is closer to what the true death toll will be, but with 43ish million dead instead of 35 million.
Yes that sounds reasonable to me. If we’re having a sweepstake I’ll go for 65 million.
Just out of curiosity how would they speed that up?
You can make a vaccine in a few days. It’s not hard for many platforms. Testing is hard. So first you need animal trials - weeks to months if you’re fast. Then various phases of human trials. First for safety and pharmacokinetics etc and then to see if it works in principle and then to put a big trial together and then large scale trials that look at safety and efficacy all in one. A typical drug trial might take several years, 3-5 is most common. Speeding it up is going to be possible but it’s going to risk letting side effects ra slip through because to be reasonably confident something is safe you need to treat enough people for long enough and monitor them.
I recall you stating that the previous SARS vaccine was abandoned because the tests resulted in more death as it kicked the immune system into overdrive was that in animals? Or humans?
as far as I remember, ferrets. I don’t think it got past that stage (I could be wrong.) our ability to create vaccines has improved a lot since SARS 1.0 - we can now do a lot of DNA based stuff we couldn’t before and computing and analysis is so much better. At some point you’ve still got to inject a lot of people with it and sit back and watch,

as for boomers, I have no issue with that generation whatsoever. On this side of the pond you’re looking at the generation that often grew up in abject poverty, lived through rationing and the aftermath of the war, and built Britain’s social structures back up. I’m gen x and my thought on this is that’s it’s a conflict created by the powers that be to reduce social cohesion. If you’re blaming your granny for having a house, you’re missing the point. Granny probably scraped and saved and lived in it with no curtains or furniture. Had no holidays, and had a material standard of living vastly less than what we do now. But if you can get millenials to hate the older generation and see them as people who were given things, things that you can’t have (which isn’t true) then the anger is directed at granny, and not at the corporate powers and globalists who have asset stripped the country, reduced worker rights and created the situation where housing costs a fortune. You’re being conned. The problem isn’t your granny, it’s a corporate/feudal/globalist type elite. The same people who shopped off the jobs and manufacturing to China and produced the mess we are in.
And that’s all I have to say about that.

AvE has a great hacked up ventilator design. If you've got a machine shop, keep your dick in a vice and start work on one

I'm a ventilator and anesthesia machine repair guy, and that is some pretty sweet afroengineering.

Here's the deal with all of the slapped-together ventilators that are being cobbled together and rushed to the hospitals right now- after the Chickety China the Chinese Sicken kerfuffle is over, those things are going straight into the garbage.

Sure, it'll be great to have them during a desperate national emergency, but they'll be nothing but ticking lawsuit time bombs in the back-to-normie times. No hospital in their right mind is going to put a patient on a ventilator thrown together in a panic by Hasbro, or Bob's Garage Ventilator Emporium after the tribulations have passed.

This is a real ventilator.

I3jImsS.jpg

It's made by Philips and it costs a shitpot of money. The Wuhanilators ain't that, not even almost. After the plague, the veterinarians might use the pandemic vents, but no sane person will hook one up to a human. The idea of a patient on one of those vents is the kind of stuff that makes a med-mal lawyer squeeze his helmet and ooze a drop.

I just re-read your post and it's also not a prophylactic for coronavirus (it treats symptoms, it doesn't prevent infection), these are doctors hoarding huge supplies just in case for themselves, family and friends. That's a crime.

It should work as a prophylactic, since it also does for malaria and it looks like the same mechanism is at work (alkalinizing cytoplasm to prevent viral entry.)

The military also has a huge stockpile of it sitting around. Since, y'know, malaria. So I guess technically we could start giving it out to people.

Yet another example of big corporations controlled by socialist CEOs abusing their power to harm the little guy, trying to destroy the family business that does all the hard work, attempting to destroy jobs and stop wealth creation, such many cases, sad!

When asked if he regrets his price gouging after 5 seconds of silence he replied that 'no', what a full blown psychopath.
Old, the government already stole it helped him donate it, modern US hand sanitizer doesn't kill the coronavirus because it doesn't have the right chemicals and or enough alcohol.

Also late as fuck,

Fun fact: You cannot both be opposed to the empty shelves in supermarkets and opposed to price gouging.

If stores had been allowed to adjust their prices in real time, the panic would have been halted in it's tracks. Yes, things would have been SLIGHTLY more expensive, for a little while, but this would have improved profits and given an impetus to create more goods.

... Dear god, I finally understand Repbulicans. Am I finally out of the DailyKOS bubble?

You just got to a very basic understanding of how market economics can allocate supplies in an emergency.
This is my economics (not word filtered) nigga, interesting content to watch if you randomly have some extra time for no real reason.

So I wanted to share my experience with Amazon: I need a small electronic gadget for my PC. 95% of the products are available after April 22nd. Very few of the products from that category are available this week.

I was wondering what causes it, because it's definitely not something you need/buy every day. I think they have massive shortages of stuff due to China debacle, and only the fact that the best shipping date was Saturday can be explained by the surge in all the orders in general. Welp, no longer same-day shipping.

It is getting scary because I know more and more people infected with COVID-19, including one person in critical condition breathing with a ventilator. :(

Because people were complaining about a metallic cough waaaaay back. I wasnt convinced but I keep getting re-sick afrer that 3 week flu, with the same issues with different levels of severity but all generally the same.

It's a nasty respiratory infection. It's on the list of causes for metallic cough but I didnt have it till after I was done being sick.
I also have some other grose conclusions but I wont go into details less you want them. But I'm pretty sure that's what's causing it and never going away. This would be round 3 for me. But I dont think I'm going to go to the doctor as it wont kill me and I dont have a job to pay for it now...
---
So tldr: if you have the 3 week flu that acts like corona minus the fever and are left with a metallic cough. 80% chance it's a upper respiratory infection and will come back.

"The average person uses one toilet roll every 12 days."

ONE?‽‽! I mean fuck, TIL I'm either wasting toilet paper or somehow shitting like ALR after a Hot Cheetos binge. ONE TOILET ROLL IN 12 DAYS?! Am wamman though, so...

It also doesn't take into account if you live with a girlfriend/wife. I started going through a full roll every few days when my gf moved in. Women generally like to almost glove themselves with it. (In addition to cleaning urine away.)

Edit: it may be a small power level, but it's the facts of life folks.

Amazon has prioritized shipping for things like health, food and household items because of corona. Other stuff is getting shipped later. It's not necessarily because they don't have the stuff.

Yeah, at least I have some level of assurance that actual DME manufacturers create safe things, since they're required to take out liability insurance for their equipment. Underwriting implies that there's at least some testing about safety going on.

Something that rolls out of Hasbro's factory, who knows. Might explode a patient's lungs straight out of his thoracic cavity.

This is worth reading if you have the time. While this man is clearly a politician with politics talk, he does seem humble and reasonable to me.
>scoffs at the idea of freedom of the press.
>scoffs at the idea of looking into people disappeared by the CCP even when pressured internationally

We have wildly different interpretations of the terms "humble and reasonable" here. If one of my dumbfuck politicians had said that, they would've been relentlessly mocked for it and their career would be dead. And spain has a horrid track record compared with the rest of the west.

The best part of this thread for me has been angry incels revealing that they don't know women have to wipe when they pee. Fellas, yano that waman also have a moon blood time and have to wipe a lot more during it? Wild stuff.

I have several sisters and I learned to never trust anything that bleeds for a few days and doesn't die.
