Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

No doubt, but at the moment if my elderly relatives get pneumonia I'd rather they have a monkey model ventilator than no ventilator at all.

When the shit hits the fan having lots of monkey model machines to supplement the limited supply of non-monkey model ones is handy. After the shit has been cleaned off the fan you can replace them with the good stuff.

I didn't mean to imply that the cobbled machines are worthless, not at all. They could very well be life savers, and doG bless the people who are putting them together and getting them where they could very well make a difference. Asspats all around.

I just thought it would be fun to point out that today's salvation machines will be tomorrow's med-mal nightmares.

From the beginning everyone just wants to feel safe and normal, I get it but.. First it was just those silly chinks and their bats, everything is fine. Then it was just those touchy feely unwashed europeans, everything is fine. Now its just those damn new yorkers and commiefornians, everything is fine... I get coping mechanisms, but its like the polar opposite of morons buying/stealing 10 lifetime supplies of everything and preparing bullets to put in their neighbors heads. None of its productive.

Yeah.

Worrying isn't productive. If you're in an emergency situation (and we are in an emergency situation) the best course of action is to keep asking yourself "what can I do, right now, in order to make myself safer." Don't worry about the future and don't do stupid things during the crisis. That's all you need to do.

I'm waiting for more 3d printed parts to come down the pipeline for medical stuff. We have fab shops locally that can make damn near anything out of a mold and they are mostly sitting around not doing jack shit.

The current 'war' /r/3dprinting is between those of us who want the parts to try and print and see what can be done inexpensively to help out vs. Reddit's LegalEagle Mod's. We want the parts that folks have access to but GodMod's are screeching about liability.

No one is looking to build a ventilator out of 3d printed plastic but there are parts that can be made at least that are in need (masks, shields, containers, machine parts). Fuck it if they work twice and are tossed, I can print more in goddamn neon pink if needbe.
like this one??

I have tried some of the 3D printed ones. its hard to breathe with, but hey if it works, it works.
we don't know if the frontliners will accept though.

Amazon has prioritized shipping for things like health, food and household items because of corona. Other stuff is getting shipped later. It's not necessarily because they don't have the stuff.
My Isopropyl Alcohol finally turned up today! Ordered off Amazon March 2nd, Apparently dispatched a day later. Went missing for 3 weeks, series of exciting emails from the supplier.
But I now have all the fixings for bathtub Hand Sanitiser! May even bother to actually make it if I get bored enough.

I have been checking the russian telegram groups to see how they are doing and to steal their may-mays.

Gosh darned commies always stealing stuff!
The lighter button is spanish damnit! I even posted here the video under "ingenuity saves the day"

More seriously. The metal part needs to be thinner in order to get properly heated. Similar contraptions have been used in a lab setting since forever, the principle is well known, but the thicker it is the more it takes to heat it, with that thickness it's a lot less efficient than the original.

Our hospital's currently finding ways to get multiple people per ventilator on old refurbished machines and the one that had an occupant when the cops came.

Yeah, fuck liability. When corona goes away I'll happily burn whatever needs burning. Right now we fucking NEED that shit, lawyers be damned.

It's like tank destroyers. Yes turreted tanks are objectively better hence they stopped being used after WW2. They were still a decisive part of ww2 though, because when you NEED a big gun in the front lines it doesn't matter what's best only what you CAN field.

Thank you everyone for your incredible messages of support and encouragement.♥️

Many of you asked what it was like in the ER right now. I want to share a bit with you. Please RT:

A Day in the Life of an ER Doc - A Brief Dispatch from the #COVID19 Frontline:

Wake up at 6:30am. Priority is making a big pot of coffee for the whole day, because the place by the hospital is closed. The Starbucks too. It's all closed.

On the walk, it feels like Sunday. No one is out. Might be the freezing rain. Or it's early. Regardless, that's good.

Walk in for your 8am shift: Immediately struck by how the calm of the early morning city streets is immediately transformed. The bright fluorescent lights of the ER reflect off everyone's protective goggles. There is a cacophony of coughing. You stop. Mask up. Walk in.

You take signout from the previous team, but nearly every patient is the same, young & old:

Cough, shortness of breath, fever.

They are really worried about one patient. Very short of breath, on the maximum amount of oxygen we can give, but still breathing fast.

You immediately assess this patient. It's clear what this is, and what needs to happen. You have a long and honest discussion with the patient and family over the phone. It's best to put her on life support now, before things get much worse. You're getting set up for that, but...

You're notified of another really sick patient coming in. You rush over. They're also extremely sick, vomiting. They need to be put on life support as well. You bring them back. Two patients, in rooms right next to each other, both getting a breathing tube. It's not even 10am yet

For the rest of your shift, nearly every hour, you get paged:

Stat notification: Very sick patient, short of breath, fever. Oxygen 88%.

Stat notification: Low blood pressure, short of breath, low oxygen.

Stat notification: Low oxygen, can't breath. Fever.

All day...

Sometime in the afternoon you recognize you haven't drank any water. You're afraid to take off the mask. It's the only thing that protects you. Surely you can last a little longer - in West Africa during Ebola, you spent hours in a hot suit without water. One more patient...

By late afternoon, you need to eat. Restaurant across the street is closed. Right, everything is closed. But thankfully the hospital cafeteria is open. You grab something, wash your hands (twice), cautiously take off your mask, & eat as fast as you can. Go back. Mask up. Walk in.

Nearly everyone you see today is the same. We assume everyone is #COVIDー19. We wear gowns, goggles, and masks at every encounter. All day. It's the only way to be safe. Where did all the heart attacks and appendicitis patients go? Its all COVID.

When your shift ends, you sign out to the oncoming team. It's all #COVIDー19. Over the past week, we've all learned the signs - low oxygen, lymphopenia, elevated D-dimer.

You share concerns of friends throughout the city without PPE. Hospitals running out of ventilators.

Before you leave, you wipe EVERYTHING down. Your phone. Your badge. Your wallet. Your coffee mug. All of it. Drown it in bleach. Everything in a bag. Take no chances.

Sure you got it all??? Wipe is down again. Can't be too careful.

You walk out and take off your mask. You feel naked and exposed. It's still raining, but you want to walk home. Feels safer than the subway or bus, plus you need to decompress.

The streets are empty. This feels nothing like what is happening inside. Maybe people don't know???

You get home. You strip in the hallway (it's ok, your neighbors know what you do). Everything in a bag. Your wife tries to keep your toddler away, but she hasn't seen you in days, so it's really hard. Run to the shower. Rinse it all away. Never happier. Time for family.

You reflect on the fact that it's really hard to understand how bad this is - and how bad its going to be - if all you see are empty streets.

Hospitals are nearing capacity. We are running out of ventilators. Ambulance sirens don't stop.

Everyone we see today was infected a week ago, or more. The numbers will undoubtedly skyrocket overnight, as they have every night the past few days. More will come to the ER. More will be stat notifications. More will be put on a ventilator.

We were too late to stop this virus. Full stop. But we can slow it's spread. The virus can't infect those it never meets. Stay inside. Social distancing is the only thing that will save us now. I don't care as much about the economic impact as I do about our ability to save lives

You might hear people saying it isn't real. It is.

You might hear people saying it isn't bad. It is.

You might hear people saying it can't take you down. It can.

I survived Ebola. I fear #COVIDー19.

Do your part. Stay home. Stay safe.

And every day I'll come to work for you

So I wanted to share my experience with Amazon: I need a small electronic gadget for my PC. 95% of the products are available after April 22nd. Very few of the products from that category are available this week.

I was wondering what causes it, because it's definitely not something you need/buy every day. I think they have massive shortages of stuff due to China debacle, and only the fact that the best shipping date was Saturday can be explained by the surge in all the orders in general. Welp, no longer same-day shipping.

It is getting scary because I know more and more people infected with COVID-19, including one person in critical condition breathing with a ventilator. :(

Amazon has prioritized shipping for things like health, food and household items because of corona. Other stuff is getting shipped later. It's not necessarily because they don't have the stuff.

True, but we're going to see a lot more of this. Soon there will be less and less of products available as stuff isn't shipped from overseas, sits in cargo containers, sits in warehouses, or plain isn't being made. Even if Amazon and grocery stores are open for business, there will be a dearth of goods.

Take your favorite shampoo. Let's say it's Prell. Now right now, there are a few boxes of it in your local grocery stores/Walmart. And cases in warehouses. You can easily get it now. But is anyone in the Prell factory, making Prell? Probably not. 2 months from now--no Prell.

Better buy another bottle soon.

Eventually there won't be regular consumer goods, and necessities might be in white labeled bottles a la govt cheese or Dharma Initiative stuff from Lost, on your local grocer's shelves or handed out by the National Guard once a week in a care package.

Here's a big wall of similar headlines if you ever want to rub this in a news outlet's face. They all love to scream about how "Trump never took it seriously!" but even if that was true, they were doing the same damned thing anyways.
I love those collages. Makes it blindingly obvious that there are no journalists. Just low level propagandists, told what to say by their masters. It's like they're not even trying.,they hold the public in utter contempt.

commercial hydrogen peroxide (the ones you can buy in drugstores) diluted in water is a better antiseptic, disinfectant than alcohol and no one is fighting over that stuff, for now

I'm not sure regularly rubbing 3% peroxide on my hands is a good long term plan.
I do have some 6% stuff I bought, as it's part of the hand gel recipe, and it's a good general cleaner and sanitiser.

A month ago I was still a bit worried about over reacting , so I only bought stuff that I would eventually use anyway. Didn't want to go crazy hoarder. Which means I'm down to my last 100 toilet rolls. Scary times man.

ETA:
Also, H202 isn't anywhere near as common in the UK as it seems to be in the US. You can't easily buy it from high street shops, due to some regulations making it too much effort for them. But it's easily available online. It's just not part what we normally use.

Quick archive Chinese Theft from Canadian lab . That story seems to be 'debunked' when you look elsewhere, but I remember it being a lot more proven. Would anyone with more time like to hunt down decent sources for this?

Medical question.
Does NAC , N-Acetyl-Cysteine do anything , or is it bullshit? Much earlier in this thread there were a couple of posts stating that it is useful when fighting off viral pneumonia.

I got the impression that it could be considered on a par with Zinc, Vit C, Vit D . But searching the web I can't find anything concrete. Lots of similar antiviral trials though:
PubMed NAC against H5N1
NAC against Dengue virus

I've been taking immune vitamin supplements , just wondering if NAC is worth anything or just Woo. E.g. Suspicious Hippie Stuff
Doc that I work with sometimes is sort of a mad scientist, he's VERY fond of NAC as a general "good for what ails you" thing especially with guanfuwhatever Mucinex but get the Costco generic so there's no DM or slow release shit.
iirc take that in the am with a biiig glass of water and get your day's mucous out in the shower

"What happened in the unseen labyrinth to which the pneumatic tubes led, he did not know in detail, but he did know in general terms. As soon as all the corrections which happened to be necessary in any particular number of The Times had been assembled and collated, that number would be reprinted, the original copy destroyed, and the corrected copy placed on the files in its stead. This process of continuous alteration was applied not only to newspapers, but to books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, leaflets, films, sound-tracks, cartoons, photographs -- to every kind of literature or documentation which might conceivably hold any political or ideological significance. Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct, nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary. "

If I were a medical professional I'd just treat people as best I could, keep records and let them take me to court after it all calms down.

I wouldn't be surprised if post coronavirus there's some sort of legal protection against medical malpractice lawsuits except in really egregious cases where the medical professionals were trying to kill people. So using unapproved drugs or equipment in a situation where the alternative was letting the patient die will not be legally actionable. Also in most civilized places, you can always let 'em sue you and just explain to the jury why you did what you did and in that case, they might well cut you some slack if you were trying to save people. Or maybe you'll be fucking penniless and unemployable and your investments will have been wiped out, like a big chunk of the rest of the population and the government won't have enough government cheese and MREs to keep 'em all from starving.

Food supply (vegetables) may be in trouble come May (scary) so the government plans to implement an Eleven-Points-Plan to help farmers and the food industry.

Its mostly luxury vegetables. the real problem is that farmers want some deregulation because they will be out of business next year otherwise.

i mean, thats also probably a factor on the low German death rates too (fucking teenagers and their vaping... but not smoking so much),

There are still alot of smokers in germany in all ages.

I was talking to someone online about the importance of not traveling to meet someone, and they accused me of wanting them to kill themselves, because not meeting that person would be detrimental to their mental health.

That is one of the most horrible arguments I have ever heard.

me: I understand that your reason is either entirely selfish, in only in the interest of the two of you.

Them: I told you before that I am severely depressed and the current situation is bringing back suicidal thoughts which I want to fight by meeting her
It is selfish to tell a suicidal person that it's selfish to wanna better themselves

More news coming from flipland.
One senator has tested positive. Senator Koko Pimentel was tested positive and broke home-quarantine protocols, to bring his pregnant wife to the hospital to deliver the kid. The said hospital (Makati Medical Center) basically made a strongly worded letter denouncing his actions

I was wondering about this: just suppose 50,000 people in NYC needed to go to hospitals within like even a 5 day period. How can ambulance fire and cops all together move that many people?

The army is going to be moving the sickos from apartments into the hospitals. Probably filling trucks with them.
Let me temper your fears here: Roughly 2% of coronavirus patients need hospitalization for the disease. At 50,000 a day, that would be 2.5 million infections per day. New york would run out of people at 3 days, assuming EVERYONE in the city got it at the same time.

GGE is actually kind of a shitty expectorant.

Just drink a glass of water and get in that hot shower. You'll be releasing contents in no time.

Poor people should just be stealing stuff since there is no consequences.
Funny how Capitalism is the only system where you can be paid to whine about video games. Because there was a market and people willing to shill out Hipster Welfare.
Under Daddy Stalin, Anita would be popping out babies for the glory of The Motherland or being worked to death in a prison camp.
