Wuhan Coronavirus: Lockdowns, Quarantines, Cancellations

Rumor is that Minnesota is about to go full Madagascar. Announcements hitting in just a few minutes.

Walz just announced a two-week shelter-in-place request (don't think it's going to be legally enforced though) starting end of the day Friday, March 27th and extended the closure of bars and restaurants to May 1st. Sounds like they're closing schools from March 30th to May 4th, too.

I called into work today to play Animal Crossing, so I'm a step ahead of the rest of the state.

So far, the word from the government is that only businesses will be fined and jailed.
The hilarious visual image from the phrasing aside, I'd howl with laughter if they actually threw someone in the slammer for violating this.

Imagine some insane bleeding-red business owner from the west side of the state or the UP ready for the coppers to come take them away. Or state troopers hauling in the owners of this place:

(Background for non-'ganders: Bronners is the [purportedly] world's largest Christmas store, and is basically what you'd imagine to be if everyone's elderly Midwestern aunt all gathered in one room and threw up. It is, even more than Disney World, the most surreal place on Earth.)

Hiking is the easiest way to catch the literal plague, no srsly look up how people in the US catch it.

OK Xi.

Plague as in bubonic plague? Don’t know exactly. I understand it to be an issue that Navajos get it from prairie dogs, and of course ticks (a real liability in woods) spread all sorts of dreadful disease.

News here about the Australian situation.

Colleges and boarding schools are sending people home this week. Restaurants can only serve food as takeaway. Pretty much every shop that doesn't sell food, medical supplies or petrol has been closed down.

Most borders are being shut down, I went through the NSW/Queensland border today in a rural area. The police had set up a roadblock with signs and traffic cones, but they took a look at my car and waved me through. It looked like they were only stopping trucks and campervans because there were a few on either side of the border. I doubt the closure will be effective though because there are dozens of dirt roads and backways across in the area and there aren't enough police to watch them all.

Not exactly a cancellation, but the Powerball Lottery (sold in 45 out of 50 states) is reducing its payouts, since social-distancing customers aren't out buying lottery tickets.

"Starting on March 25, the Powerball jackpot will only increase by a minimum of $2 million between drawings if there is no winner. The standard increase is $10 million per drawing, which helps build huge jackpots if no one wins for several weeks. Powerball’s minimum starting jackpot if someone wins will also dip to $20 million, down from the traditional $40 million."

(Also, Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland is indeed closed. They are still taking online orders, but will not ship until the store re-opens) (website) (archive)

ETA: The actual Powerball website is here, archive here.

Oh no... what will crackheads in New Jersey and chain smoking drunks do for hope now?

Twitter vid archivist requested.

This has come up a few times already. It's an Armored Brigade that just returned from Korea with their equipment. They just offloaded the ships in LA and packed everything on the trains. The tanks are going back to the factory for refit and upgrade. The Troops are getting new Tanks/already upgraded tanks when they return to their home base.

I didn't see this posted but DeSantis decreed all incoming New Yorkers must quarantine themselves for 14 days. He's sending the National Guard to airports to make sure they comply.

Yeah, he can't do that. Something about the Commerce Clause and Privileges and Immunities. Good luck Ron.

People above 65 will only be allowed to visit these places between 9:00 AM and noon, while others will be banned from entering during this time.

Police will be enforcing these restrictions with the involvement of military police and other law enforcement agencies.

Violating these restrictions is punishable with a fine of up to 500,000 Forints (~€1400).

This fine is approximately 2-3 month's full salary, nothing to laugh at .

Australian businesses are set for a possible six month period of "hibernation" in a further attempt to shield the economy from the devastating impact from the coronavirus.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said details of the plan to effectively cocoon businesses will be announced in the next few days as part of a third stimulus package which will also include commercial and residential rental assistance.
"There are businesses which will have to close their doors," Mr Morrison told reporters in Canberra after meeting with the national cabinet made up of premiers and chief ministers.

One of the most disgusting things I've seen. 6 months is suicide for businesses. I know about 6 people already who have lost their businesses, will lose their homes and are so in debt, they have no idea of what they'll do.
There's no need for any of this. This comes after Myer is shutting its doors, "standing down" its 10,000 employees.

Suicide rates are already set to skyrocket. Beyond Blue (mental health charity) have seen their demand in the past week, over run it's highest peak demand. People will lose everything in this.

Westpac chief economist Bill Evans estimates the number of unemployed will rise by 814,000 people in coming months, with the unemployment rate leaping from 5.1 per cent to 11.1 per cent.

I guess it's "worth it" to have the lives of the many destroyed/wiped out to save the lives of the few. They could have just put on more nurses and hospital beds and it would have been cheaper and less deadly then killing off millions of jobs - jobs that will never come back.

I'm telling you, this whole outbreak will be a blimp compaired to the destruction that is being caused by these weird measures.
