Ohio, and other states making big predictions about their imminent needs, are trying to demonstrate that their worst-case scenario needs aren't fulfilled. They also are trying to get people to take the virus seriously so people will take active measures to keep themselves from becoming walking bio-weapons. It was only days ago morons were heading down to Florida for Spring Break, bragging that they might get the virus.

Spreading out the infection rate does 2 things. First, it allows time to ramp up production of vital equipment and increasing hospital space. You might only have 30k capacity now, but with time new beds can be added. Peaking at 150k leaves 120k people out in the cold, but peaking at 40k for longer means that a max of 10k are left out at any given time. More people may get sick, but 75% can receive life saving care instead of 20%. Second, it allows resources to be utilized in places that are much worse off now, like New York and Washington. All this production of masks, ventilators, and tests can continue as different places hit peak, and doctors can relocate as needed (many states have emergency orders allowing out of state and retired healthcare workers get quick licenses).

Which sounds good, but I ask what exactly the state is doing with this time. It certainly hasnt been to set up additional PPE manufacturing, because two weeks in and the shortages are reaching a tipping point. Beds? They have the dorms of many state universities ready to go for plague wards, wont help since they dont have the staff or equipment, and a month of time wont get nearly enough, hell a year of quarantine wouldnt get you enough staff members, because the whole medical system is run on a knifes edge with 0 overprovisioning.

I understand the virus is dangerous, and I understand that Ohio's government is trying to ward people off, but the issue is that all these warnings they give out about how many people will be infected and yada yada yada, is that testing is nowhere to be found. This is something people have been asking about since the shutdown started two weeks ago. Where are the tests? The main thing they are out of has been swabs. We have testing capacity in abundance, cleveland is kicking around an empty testing lab, University of Toledo stated they would start processing cases, Cinncinnati and Columbus both have the ability to process tests. Swabs have been in short supply.

Now, I respect that DeWine is trying his best to be transparent with the state's responses, but if he really wanted to get the point across, he would be pushing for more tests. How hard is it to set up an idled factory, like the one in lordstown, to produce swabs? Shouldnt be that hard, and yet here we are. All his speeches on what hes going to improve, and testing rates never come up. It makes it very hard to take any claims of 10K infections a day seriously when he couldnt even test 1/10th of the fourth largest city over the course of an entire month. How can he make such claims with no data to back them up?

And I mean, 10K a week. Really? How on earth does he figure that Ohio's infection rate will eclipse that of italy, a country with far more testing per capita then the US and 6x ohio's population? If they are trying to get people to take the shelter order seriously by throwing out big scary numbers, it is backfiring hard, because most people I've heard locally are skeptical of the numbers Dewine is presenting. Even new york, with a dense mega-city housing over 8 million people, only hit 10K new cases once this week. Today its only up 7K.

so, when they die, face down, they leave them in that position until someone has time to deliver them to my department. by the time they arrive many of them have livor mortis - covering the face, neck and upper chest.
