I think the calculus changes when the previous question that was asked was "Is it possible that your impulse to put a positive spin on things may be giving Americans a false sense of hope?" That previous question seems like a passive-aggressive attempt at confrontation, and I see no reason to indulge someone after they try a followup after that.
