TGWTG "Nostalgia Critic" / Doug Walker, Rob Walker, Mike Michaud, Mike Ellis, Holly Christine Brown, et al - The Incompetent Predator-Protecting Upper Management of Channel Awesome, Doug Still Not That Funny

Heck, Neo's name being Tom at the start is actually the point. He hasn't become The One just yet, and as such, has an extremely ordinary name to reflect his existance as being just another slave to The Matrix. But heck, why point that out when you can just mock?

I even remember when the Wikipedia entry for some of the films was hijacked by his fanboys, placing Tom everywhere Neo was mentioned. And that's not even getting into how he single-handedly managed to turn TV Tropes users against the film for a while, and even other users on film sites began bashing it after his review (guess his skit at the end calling out for people who disliked the film was taken seriously).

Why does he have such a sway over people?
Because he says his words in a way that makes him look like a film expert, but he doesn't have the taste of somebody like Chris Stuckmann or RLM that makes look like an elitist snob. Also, his brand of film analysis was the thing in 2010 or so.

Why does he have such a sway over people?

He attempts to show online an assertive personality and he has a web show, and that's enough to sway any passive-aggressive manchild (or most people, people give way too much trust and power to those in media). Besides, most of the people who slobber over Doug have pretty poor film knowledge so it's often a case of ignorance.
Basically web!Doug is what every manchild fanboy wishes to be: some wildcard who screams at everyone over his cartoons and yet society should praise him for this childish behavior instead of scolding him.

That's sorta Doug's thing, in that amidst all the usual criticisms people make at the bad movies he tackles he also adds one or two reasons he dislikes the film which in hindsight aren't really a big deal, but he makes a mountain out of a molehill of them (ea Neo's real name, the girl in the Black Cauldron being a princess when it adds nothing to the story, it doesn't add anything but still doesn't harm the film yet Doug acts like it's a huge sin).

I dunno if he does this to add his "personal flair" to films everybody else has already criticized so his take stands out more, or he's that dumb and misses the point often.
I think it's a bit of both. Another good example is how he makes fun of the one-sided prayer in Conan the Barbarian when that was literally the point.

As annoying as it is for Doug to always pepper reviews with dumb skits, at least he has the courtesy to let you know it's coming, so you skip the parts.

Like, whenever the phone rings and its Malcom furthering his dumb skits.

I gotta say, I'm pretty miffed that Doug complained about Jameson refusing to sell out Peter to the Green Goblin when his life was in danger. That's one of the main moments that showed that the former, for all of his bitterness and jerk attitude, does indeed have a good side to him and will not endanger the lives of his employees. It's basically adding depth and nuance to his character, yet Doug sees it as contradictory.
JJJ: *acts like a decent human being and refuses to put his employee's life in danger*
Doug: What a strange behavior! I don't understand it!

I mean, after all of that, I know I shouldn't be surprised. But really, Doug. REALLY.

Every time I see Demo reel mentioned, I stop and wonder what it would have been like had Doug decided to have some dedication to his project and did whatever it took to make it succeed instead of seeing the negative reception and backtracking immediately.
It sucked for sure, but if he real cared, he would have retooled it
I actually watched DR when it came out and got to admit, an idea of a bunch of miserable people trying to get their shit together while working on cheap remakes have its dramedy potential. It would be pretty good thing had Walkers gave it to some real skilled scriptwriter. Unfortunately, Doug's too stupid to understand that he has not enough talent for that kind of stuff.

That's how it is for a lot of the CA folk. A lot of Linkara's whining about All Star Batman and Robin was mainly about how an alternate universe version of the characters... didn't match up with the traditional interpretation, by which he means the cartoon he grew up on.
Nah, ASBAR's shit not because it's dark and edgy, but because it really sucks in it. There's a difference between being honest dark-toned story and being "shock value for shock value" garbage.

Actually when it comes to the whole no kill rule Batman fans who read the comics(many of which are allot more dedicated to the character than Lewis remember his favorite series is the Titans) are the most obsessed with the no kill rule. Probably because of what a big part it played in The Dark Knight Returns which as a moderate Batman fan I honestly never cared for.

He has killed in the comics. And him not using guns is a contradiction because his vehicles are armed with machine guns.

Yeah, although comic book fans get very picky on what they consider canon to a character. I mean Superman fans and even writers despise Man of Steel partially because Clark Kent kills Zod stating that Superman never kills. Despite the fact that in both the comics and Superman 2 he kills the entire Zod gang.

You know, I've heard a thing about Batman. It's that "he won't kill you, but he will cripple you for the rest of your life."

I'd say that's because they feel some superheroes HAVE to be in a certain mold. ANd for Superman, that HAS to be the first Richard Donner Superman film from the 1970s, or it HAS to be that All Star Superman that has that panel where Superman tells some suicidal girl "you're better than you think you are". (Also, Man of Steel was what many people thought was DC having Marvel envy when the MCU was at the height of their popularity.) To bring it back to Doug, it's like why he's been so on the Sam Raimi films and their silliness: it's probably because he believes some heroes have to be done a certain way, and when something deviates automatically makes it terrible. Look at how much he gushes about Batman 1989 and Batman: The Animated Series, and how he bashed Batman & Robin and hasn't even touched the Adam West stuff.

If they had humiliation and gone the meta narrative dramedy route after the negative reception came in, it could have been a great transition into serious content for them. But they’re dead set on being great comedians, and the sad thing is that they’ve never been even passable ones.

Channel Awesome's going "back to basics" for a few weeks. Hoping this means less sketches.

It's a shame wig shops are non-essential, because it sure as hell would complete the nostalgic feel to see him "with hair" again.

For all his talk about understanding subtext in films and the like, it's baffling that he misses this one.

Doug even forced the joke out with Popeye and Bluto. There are actual Popeye cartoons where the two work together, such as one where they gotta keep Olive Oyl safe on a battleship.
