Linda is still giving exceptional takes on the virus. If only she’d admit that health and weight have a correlation :optimistic:
People can't just "lose" HIV once they have it, people can't just "lose" being elderly, but you definitely can lose the weight to be at only an overweight or slightly obese BMI. It'd be hard, and you'd need to stay dedicated, but it can be done. I wouldn't give a lung to someone who fully intends to go back to smoking a pack a day afterwards, but of course this is the sort of thing where it's a non issue until it affects you personally. So, what, you want to bowl over 12 year olds to get your paws on a ventilator is what you're saying?

Lindo is fortunate that ugly people aren't denied ventilators. She would be even further down the list.

I can hardly expect intellectual honesty out of the likes of Linda Bacon, so I'm not surprised she's twisted the issue of COVID triage into a matter of "quality of life," in which triage is a harsh and unfair judgment of one's perceived worth as a human being, and whether one is "disposable" or not.

No, Linda; it's about whether the individual patient stands a snowball's chance in hell of surviving severe COVID-19, once they get to the point when they require ventilation. That's it. Nothing more. The better chance one has of survival, the higher priority they will receive in a triage situation; that's what triage means, whether it's on a battlefield or in the midst of a global pandemic.

There are conditions that are already proven to lead to poor outcomes no matter what is done for the patient, and when terrible decisions have to be made regarding who gets access to limited and inadequate resources, younger, healthier people with BMIs below a certain level are going to get priority because they stand a better chance of survival.

Life is not fucking fair. There are people who, through no fault of their own, live with disabling or chronic conditions, and that's unfair in itself. That they might not get a ventilator during a catastrophe, when hospitals are overwhelmed and there simply aren't enough resources to save everybody who comes through the door? That's horribly unfair. But it's not fatphobic doctors, or a system that hates disabled people and seeks to exterminate them, that is to blame for that unfairness--it's just the tragedy of existence.

Obesity is one of the preexisting conditions that leads to poor outcomes, so no, fatties aren't going to get a ventilator when the choice has to be made. Neither is the Type 1 diabetic who has maintained a normal body weight. One of those is less unfair than the other--can you guess what it is, Linda?

She's not the only fatty who thinks "triage" is a dog-whistle for "eugenics," BTW:

Mean Fat Girl/@Artists_Ali has already been posted in this thread numerous times; she's the creator of the notorious @ok2befat Twitter account, which exists to reassure fatties that there are absolutely no consequences to obesity that aren't a product of systemic, institutionalized fatphobia. And of course, she's making her "triage = eugenics" claims there, too:

And of course, she's making her "triage = eugenics" claims there, too:

Seems like I'm pro-eugenics then. Why should we prioritise someone who'll eat themselves into the ground in the next decade without contributing much more than the occasional Twitter sperg out? Perhaps she could speak up for herself if she could breathe without an apnea machine.

They think that doctors think a lot about them and how they don’t deserve life, lol. Doctors see hundreds of people every month, many of those people have unfair life situation or sickness. They would burn out really quickly if they emotionally cared for patients like they care for their family. After a year or two of work patients become just a lists of illness and symptoms that needs to be monitored and fixed. Nothing personal, it’s just a job.
And when doctor says you better lose weight, they say it not because they personally hate you and want to shame you. They say it because it’s their job to make your health better, not because they see you as a lesser human.

Sounds a lot like projection of their own anxiety, IMO.

Same. If they can’t be bothered to take care of their health why should we?

Overweight or slightly obese is still too fat when it comes to triage, though.
Our algorithm for vent use in a state of emergency prioritizes it for people <=25 BMI

lol

In a disease... that affects the lungs and causes the lungs to struggle to distribute oxygen to cells and organs, yeah people will need a ventilator. Guess what an excess 300 lbs already does to the body?
Given the poor outcomes for those on ventilators, the morbidly obese are fucked anyway. If anyone morbidly obese gets this disease, gets critical, and manages to survive it, it should be the wake up call to end wake up calls.

Too many will still find a way to justify staying fat: "Why, CoVD is so HARD on you. I was sedated & on a ventilator for 12 days. My body would have shut down completely because I couldn't eat! I would have died if I didn't have some fat reserves." Or something like that.

Man, every time you see a news story about some young person with no pre existing conditions dying of corona, they’re always fat. I’ve seen posts from nurses talking about this too.

I saw a person in r/nursing ask:

“So, what are these obese patients suffering from that kills them when a thin person wouldn’t die?”

They’re suffering from being obese. More strain on your heart. More fat pushing down on your lungs.

Generally if you’re a young fatty, you’re fine. Shortness of breath walking long distances. It takes a while for your body to start breaking down. You don’t see why doctors are so concerned when there aren’t any consequences. Like young people who smoke a pack a day.

Coronavirus won’t be a wake up call, though, nothing will be.

This is a running theme on voat's FPH. The headlines consistently say someone was "fit and healthy," and the picture shows someone that is clearly obese.

It's misleading, it's dangerous. If they just came out and said, "Yet another obese person died," the FA people would flip their shit, but that's really a small percentage of overweight and obese people (which is most of the population). If they were being honest, maybe it would be a wake up call. It definitely would be for some.

I know voat is still on lockdown, so I'll just steal a couple to post here:

'It's all so cruel': Fit and healthy father, 27, dies with coronavirus symptoms just 10 days after the birth of his son

Fucking sad. But why lie about it? How will that help? voat source

These are just two of many examples. Notice how they didn't die because of some cruel and fatphobic triage nurse? They just fucking dropped dead.

That new father story is tragic. Interestingly, he doesnt look THAT big. Sure, hes big, but nowhere near cow status. And while his symptoms would be a match, they could also be a match for regular flu run amok, he hasnt been confirmed COVID yet.

Sad as it is, I'm going to guess he was also a smoker, given how much more prevalent smoking is in younger adults in places like england VS the US. I've noticed that a lot of drug/smokers are being listed as "fit and healthy" by the media, simply because they hadnt developed chronic issues yet.

He's not "that big" but I almost guarantee he was obese. (Totally guessing here, but for example, let's say he was 5'10. He'd only have to be 210 to be obese.)
We are so used to most people being overweight, hardly anyone even knows what a healthy weight looks like anymore. And looks don't matter when it comes to the science of how much weight your frame should carry.
