Culture Shenzhen becomes first Chinese city to ban consumption of cat and dogs - Captain Hindsight to the rescue

Shenzhen has become the first Chinese city to ban the sale and consumption of dog and cat meat.

It comes after the coronavirus outbreak was linked to wildlife meat, prompting Chinese authorities to ban the trade and consumption of wild animals.

Shenzhen went a step further, extending the ban to dogs and cats. The new law will come into force on 1 May.

Thirty million dogs a year are killed across Asia for meat, says Humane Society International (HSI).

I bet this is pure PR. I doubt they enforce it, they will still boil dogs alive.
Oh absolutely. Keep in mind this article claims that "[m]ost Chinese people don't actually consume dogs and cats and never plan to". That sure makes you wonder why the Chinese are producing so much meat that nobody's buying.

Yeah but those guys don't cause the entire world to get infected with their awful diet.
Also most every redneck will admit to what they did and deal with being called an idiot, as opposed to spending millions on a global propaganda campaign to deny reality and "save face".

I mean armadillos carry leprosy and rabies, and pigs can carry like two other debilitating parasites other than tapeworms.

It has less to do with what they're eating and more with how the food is prepared, namely improperly cooking the meat.

Edit: Expanding on this; you're less likely to catch a disease from eating cats or dogs (though I don't recommend it, especially if you aren't killing them in a humane fashion). It also should be noted that bats are not, as commonly believed, related to rats or rodents but instead are distant relatives to primates, so the likelihood of disease transmission is much higher than it would be if they actually were related to rats.

And suddenly there is a huuuge blackmarket dealing in exotic meat, while the ccp quietly looks the other way. No way in hell they stop eating those poor animals, this law is just to pacify the annoying west. Get your rat foetus at a slighty increased price, harvested while you wait. Just isolate those goblins from the rest of the world, fuck china. Dont buy made in china.

This is literally just Shenzen right now, not the rest of China, and they're a special economic region on the border of HK, so it's more likely a power move within China as opposed to the CCP saving face. They have dictatorial control over the country on paper, if this was just empty PR they'd blanket ban it in the entire country.
I'm not guaranteeing this is a good thing, and obviously fuck the CCP and their role in creating/spreading this virus, but don't let knee-jerk anti-orientalism keep you from potentially noticing infighting among your enemies.

Eating dog and cat is sort of a relic of rural Chinese life. As the cities grew and the younger generations became more accustomed to the luxuries of Capitalist life and culture, they stopped with the gook shit. Its absolutely true this is still a dying trend, many younger city-born Chinese actively fight against many of the outdated, harmful traditions of their elders.

I’m usually the first one to call someone a gook for acting gooky, but I have to give it to the younger generations of China on this one.
