Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

It probably helps that CA understands how quickly shit could get fucked up, none of the delusional people are in places of power like in NYC. All the lolcows never make it past state rep.

Gavin was rounding up the homeless and telling the citizens to start acting white on like March 1st. Say what you will about CA, their state government is the only one where the intelligent people end up near the top with all the idiots only being foot soldiers. Surprisingly great executive department, Jerry Brown wasn't being called a nazi for nothing.

You dont see the mayors of LA or SF going full De Blasio either.

Now picture, for just a moment, a Governor AOC.

Almost definitely not. I work in a healthcare-adjacent field, the CEO of the county's local healthcare services system called our big boss yesterday asking for advice dealing with the homemade mask issue - a ton of people are donating them, but they can't use them without leaving themselves open to liability. Can't turn them away or let the public know they can't use them for PR reasons either, so they're "piling up in a corner".

Don't tell the public, keep taking them in, and either recycle them quietly, donate them to more vulnerable people who won't otherwise get any PPE whatsoever or dispose of them in the dead of night. It's a good PR exercise and one done time and time again in war-time like situations.

Greatest example was the spare metal drive to build spitfires and tanks, resulted in lots of railings, pots, pans and god knows what else donated by an eager british public during the second world war.

All of the stuff was complete junk and of no use compared to the high quality aluminium that was needed for the planes and decent quality steel for tanks. It was probably melted down for railway lines or just dumped where nobody noticed it.

I have a question guys about your personal experience: do you start to feel like outcasts because of not wearing masks in public? Or you are wearing masks all the time?
UK report. Went out for my second shopping trip of lockdown today. Impressions:
- It seemed really busy out there. Surprising number of people (in twos and threes) walking , cycling , doing stuff. No big groups taking the piss, but deffo more like a holiday than a quarantine. I think the nice weather and 9 days of lockdown mean people have had enough.
Sainsbury's and ASDA carparks were so busy I didn't even stop. Went to M&S again for the minimal queue. CoronaChan is feeding me well. Also saw a massive queue outside the NatWest bank. Why would that be happening? Is that how you claim your free money?
- I wore a disposable FFP3 mask, and safety glasses. Looked like a complete arse. Out of the hundreds of people I must have seen , only three were wearing masks . One middle aged bloke walking on his own , one ancient hunched old man in the supermarket, and me. I was the only one with EyePro, and they weren't sealed.

I sprayed my shopping down with disinfectant spray when I got back . Is everyone else doing this?

Overall, I feel like I'm just playing at this. If this was Mr Tripps, these precautions would do nothing. As it is, maybe I'm improving the odds a tiny bit. To be fair, the mask is for others benefit as well, I've had a niggly occasional dry cough on and off for 2 weeks....

One thing that's bothering me. Apparently the UK lockdown rules also include "No unnecessary journeys" . I.e. no going for a drive into the country to go for a walk. I guess they are trying to limit geographic spread, but this seems ridiculous . Makes me wonder what's really going on. It just doesn't feel real at the moment. Mixture of draconian lockdown, and casual half arsed measures.

Shitty day over here with a pretty large spike of infections and deaths: 392 new cases and 14 more people who didn't make it, putting us at 2888 total active cases. Perhaps the sheer numbers are obfuscating things somewhat, as half of those cases can be traced to two specific hospitals. Deaths are higher because apparently they're now counting people even if it wasn't certain the coronavirus was the main cause, Or So I Heard. We should be back to 250-300 daily cases tomorrow.

I found a Wikipedia article that's keeping track of all the shutdowns in place in various US states/cities/counties.

It's useful for keeping up with the news, especially considering that most countywide shutdowns are only reported in local news sources.
That sort of thing would go in the thread made for that-

We're definitely coming up with a plan to re-donate to orgs like food banks and homeless shelters, but the PR point is an awesome one and one that I'll definitely bring up as we are still trying to figure that part out. Thank you!

The rest of the world is really pushing forward with calling China out on their bullshit. Here in the United States, we have people literally saying there's no difference between the free speech in the United States and the "free speech" in China.
In China if you express dissent against your rulers you might not be allowed on high speed trains. In the US if you do the same you might lose your livelihood and not be allowed to use AirBnB, Uber, Twitter, and Facebook. But you'll still be allowed to use Amtrak (for now). So yes, there clearly is a difference.

I feel worse for teens and young adults (15-25 or so). An economic downturn would be catastrophic for them, with lifelong repercussions. They probably have even more student loan debt than the benighted 2008 college grad millennials. In contrast, little kids have a decade's worth of insulation.

A bad economy will dampen your childhood, but you can ride the upswing as a young adult. Meanwhile, the 19-year-old who never got a "real" job is now 40+ with a nuclear resume and triple digit debt.

I agree with you.

At least we (30 +) had a f*cking chance.

Er, is a sore throat a symptom of it? Cousin has it, then my aunt has it. I'm hoping it's just the remains of flu/cold season leaving or just a strep throat.

Most older folks are going out in masks if they're able and doing so when with the lark. Remember, most supermarkets are giving them 8-9am to get their shopping done and dusted. I'm tempted to try out your M&S idea.

I did a short shopping trip to my local shop the other day. Of the half dozen of us, only one wasn't wearing at least gloves. Most folks simply didn't get masks in time. So most are making do with either scarves, paint masks or anything they can use. I've got a big rebreather style mask that gets some looks and impressive nods. I'd rather be safe and look like a nob for a few months than killed by Corona-chan (I've got high chances with a compromised immune system).

Also, yes. I've been spraying everything with disinfectant while its still sealed.

Hospitals see a lot more masks from folks.

Sweet Jesus what a trainwreck. I bet he's living like Boogie, "I'll be dead soon anyway so I better jug grease now". I wonder if he has a 401K to try and draw out of.

This is where I see the light in the tunnel though. Soo many people are fucking stupid and are going to be ruined that anyone who maintains income coming out of this and has a cushion of cash should do extremely well picking stuff up for cheap.
Even worse is the fact he will be utterly BTFOd by Corona-Chan. Obese, uncontrolled type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, lifelong smoker, COPD, blood flow issues in his legs (just like boogie, but much less advanced). He is freaking the fuck out about the disease, its been a major wake up call for him. But hes in his mid 50s, might be a bit too late to fix much for him now.

He gets a pension, and a substantial one at that (HVAC work), so he has guaranteed income in retirement. It wont be enough to cover his expenses and two divorces though. Trainwreck? Nah, this is more along the lines of the Hood sailing out to meet Bismark.

The financial deals are going to be crazy. Cars are already being sold with 0% interest, and no payments for 120! days. Once normalcy resumes, the sub prime automotive lending bubble is gonna burst, and the market will be FLOODED with used cars. Perfect timing for me, my car is getting on 17 years old and a fair bit worn out.

Forget the wall, we need put a giant, plexiglass dome over Mexico

(archive)
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador repeatedly dismissed the need for caution, urging Mexicans to go shopping and eat out. He even took his own advice, staging large campaign-style rallies, kissing babies, embracing supporters, and saying things like, “You have to hug, nothing is going to happen.”

[...]

Mexico, with a population of 130 million, has only 356 ICU units, fewer than 50,000 hospital beds, fewer than 2,500 ICU beds, and just 5,523 ventilators. That’s for the entire country.
I'm getting a few flashbacks from the news about the banana republic :story:

Will the muchachos head into an Ecuador-like level of catastrophe?

Here's a copy of the video mentioned in the article. It's from the main wholesale market in Mexico.

Because when shit started to hit the fan, Gavin Newsom surprised every single person in the country by speed-dialing the White House and asking for their advice on how to handle the outbreak. He was one of the first governors to do that, and as a result of following their advice and the facilitation of federal help, the infection rate in California nearly flatlined. Newsom had the good sense to shut the fuck up and just do his job instead of playing politics, and it worked.

View attachment 1212844

He pulled in every single state asset that he could find, he started recruiting retired civilian and military medical personnel, he took in anyone who was able to volunteer for non-medical duties so that the medical staff could get freed up, and he went nuts on finding locations for military 'field hospitals.'

New York, on the other hand, just danced around like brain-dead idiots and kept encouraging people to go out and party in Chinatown (And I mean that they literally did that) and took every opportunity to ignore every piece of advice that the Federal government was offering them until their infection rate just exploded.

For once, California actually didn't fuck something up. I was shocked because I would have bet my last dollar that California was going to be the Ground Zero for this outbreak in the U.S., but something managed to scare the shit out of Newsom and he got to work.

So Newsom was competent, ignored party lines for the sake of his people, kept his subordinates under control and helped all he could while Cuomo did the exact opposite. And Democrats are claiming Cuomo is their new savior and ignoring Newsom.

Yeah I can see the paralells with the PP.

You're probably not going back unless it was statistical noise. The bell grows exponentially. It's just how it goes, once it's out of control the amount of small issues like hospital outbreaks, supermarket contagions, etc. Just keep accumulating. You gotta focus on flattening the curve, don't let the growth get to you just keep flattening while you can and try to avoid collapse. I know it's fucked up. But that's epidemiology in a nutshell.

Trump even commented that Newsom was doing a good job the other day at one of his briefings. It was definitely eyebrow raising at the time.

It seems that the surge of infections are on the increase in the US. Now from the Reuters Map of the US they have a good logistical viewpoint on how the virus is spreading. So I suggest you take a look at it from time to time and see how fast it is spreading and please note These are only the infections that have been recorded.

I firmly believe the following:

1. By using our data that we have gathered. I firmly believe that the virus got out the first weeks in November in Wuhan. It has taken the Virus over there 4 months before there is a foreseeable decline. Note: One of my contacts is back in Southern China now and it is somewhat quiet over where he is... As he has stated .

If applied to our current time scale the virus should subside/ go on the down swing by the end of April. That does not mean everything is done. It just means we are going to have I think 2 weeks of a surge of cases, based on all of the data we have gathered and then it will be a downturn.

2. I know China was not successful in containing the Virus and the brutality and death is staggering. I believe that over 740 million people in China were under lock down orders. I believe that at least 250 thousand are dead This is based on the massive 24/7 cremations and all of the rentals the CCP leased, the cell phone situation which is their version of our Social Security Card. And of course the thousands of cremated urns showing up at Wuhan Alone. This also does not count for some of the mysterious sites that could be large mass graves. So again at least 250 thousand dead in a population of 1.4 billion people.

3. I firmly believe that this virus and its deaths, but worse this whole entire lock down could have been avoided. for most of the world. It would take too damn long to write down the reasons why again as we have already hundreds of pages of what happens when a government like Italy, Spain, and the US ignore all of that information that we fellow Kiwis found, by research and deduced to a logical conclusion.

We are so right on so many things that to this day we are ahead of the game, so once again please continue to give us the data so we can continue being one step ahead of everyone else. This is why I drove a few hours a day every 3 or 4 days now to give you that proper data that I can see. Because of the increases of people getting ill in my region, I'm only going to be driving once a week. I am seeing the data of my region of a sharp spike of reported infections so I'll be staying home and making phone calls to other people in my region to get their report.

4. We have all walks of live here. From those in the Health Industry to those in the Death Industry. From business and military backgrounds to average people giving concerns and input. It is all important in the scheme of things as information is power and the right information can prepare others, So we can protect themselves as best as they can from this virus as well as everything else during this flu and cold season.

5. Though I don't think it will happen as much here in the US I still think that in certain areas, we are getting to down to skeleton crews running our utilities. What keeps our water and lights running. There is a possibility that there might be brown outs, or local banks closing due to virus out breaks, so its a good idea now (if you have not done it all ready) to have some emergency provisions + money on hand just in case.

Because of our data gathering many of us had a 2 month head start to calmly gather up supplies and take care of financial needs before things start turning ugly. I still do not think that there will be a huge death count (millions dead) here in the US, but because how many vectors that the virus can infect anyone. I know a lot of people are going to get sick.

But if you have read here on what you need to protect yourself as well on what to do if you got the mild version of it, you are going to be fine. Please continue to give us the data here so we can continue to give out logical deductions on what to do next.

Remember none of this would be possible if we did not work together world wide. I know that the governments have not been truthful in sharing the information until it was too late. We are the ones that have to protect ourselves, our family and our friends. The information gathered helps us to this end.

You dont see the mayors of LA or SF going full De Blasio either.
Honestly I give Garcetti (LA Mayor) a C-.

At the end of the day, he supported the LA Marathon proceeding as planned when that was an obvious tard move. And while the LA area hasn't completely fallen to shit,
A) much of that is county-level
B) Garcetti is really taking advantage of this time to appear on TV every day to quote Cesar Chavez at us and other dumb shit.

Newsom gets a B. Seems to have swallowed some Orange Man Bad pride here and helped to keep things safer in the state than I was imagining would happen in February.

Nobody gets higher than a B in this crisis. There's just too much obvious shit they all fucked up.
