There will ALWAYS be a new plague, an aggressive strain of flu, a possible terrorist attack, plane crash, fire, ece. You, presumably, went back to the theaters after the swine flu outbreak of 2009. Why didnt you stop then? How did you know that H1N1 wouldnt mutate into a deadlier strain?I was in a zoom focus group last night-- this was a cross-section of people 18 to 49 from all over the USA. They were asking us about marketing movies direct to home viewing. The last thing they asked us about was going back to theaters after corona-chan is over. Everyone else said that they would be going right back as soon as it was over in May or June.
I said we don't know if this will mutate and come back in the fall, or if a new virus will come along after this one, or how long this one will keep on going. I have people I am responsible for, so I didn't know if or when I would be going back to theaters. I could get them sick, and with one of them, I could get an entire nursing home sick.
I could see the faces of the other participants, and they all instantly got this look of horror. It was clear that none of them had ever thought about this lasting more than a couple of weeks, or about another virus happening. Maybe I need to make more of an effort to hang around more stupid people, but I was a little taken aback that none of them had anticipated that the world might not go back to the way it was after this.
You think of others before yourself, and while commendable, there is another way to interpret your thoughts - fear. Paralyzing fear. No different then the people who refused to ever fly or travel out of state in 2002 because "WHAT IF THERES A TERRORIST!!!?!?!?".
If you want to live in a shelter-in-place capacity until the risk of pandemic is over, you'll spend the rest of your life in fear of catching the coof. Not wanting to cower in the corner over the possibility of catching a virus for the rest of your life is hardly stupidity.
